I was in DC for most of the previous week so I took some pics. Please forgive the relative low quality as I'm not a photographer by any means. I have included comments for some of the photos:

Nice. Been there several times and have seen each of the sites in your pictures except for the Jefferson memorial, for some reason I have never been to it. But I have been to his house, Monticello, several times.

I was there in 2000 and was struck by now small everything looked at his home. One of these days I'll make the trip to Mt. Vernon to see Washington's home and tomb.

Brings back an old memory.

Went to Washington DC on NASA business. At a meeting I met a female Astronaut who, like me, had not "walked" DC. One afternoon we spent a few hours walking together and visiting area monuments, museums, etc of the attached picture map.

Thank you for sharing that awesome story! It's not every day that you get to go sight-seeing with an astronaut!

Thanks for the reminder! Here is a photo I took when I was there last week. It's right down the reflecting pool from the Lincoln Memorial.

It still angers me that it took us so long to honor The Greatest Generation. Many WWII veterans, including my father, did not live to see it.

They didn’t look for any recognition or accolades. They were just getting on with what needed to be done. That’s why they are the Greatest Generation.

Much of those photos has not changed nearly at all in 35 years, since I last visited DC.

There were a LOT of renovations going on with many of the monuments and museums .when I was there. I think this is all stuff that was delayed due to COVID and they just recently got around to implementing the renovation projects.

I visited Washington last year with the focus being The Smithsonian. I was very disappointed with how they redid the museums. Dumbed them down.

I did notice some of that we well in addition to some other things but those fall under the PWEC category.

I was stationed in DC three different times in my career. There is a lot to see and there are some great museums off the typical tourist track along with some interesting Civil War battlefields. The current leadership of the US is fervently obsessed with lowering the average intelligence and we see it in how we now see so much technology at the 10th grade level. I will stop here without saying more, much to the relief of some of you.

I have not been there since the late 90's. The memorials and monuments can defitly leave you humbled. The Smithsonian was still a wonderful place. I was amazed at how bad the traffic was and how strange it was to be able to only walk a short distance from the Capital and find yourself in a very bad neighborhood.

I visited both Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville back in 2000. It was a great experience!

In what way? Asking because I want to know, not as provocation.

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

Using the Air and Space museum as an example. They expanded the restaurant and gift shop to at least 1/4 of the space. They have a larger area of Science Fiction and movies. Star Wars has a large section with a full size X-wing fighter. Many Star Wars interactive exhibits. Large section of Airline stewardess uniforms. Another large section devoted to The Search for Speed which had nothing about aircraft and was devoted to cars and motorcycles. All together this I’ve mentioned was about 80% of the museum. It was childish and failed to follow the growth of flight from early to the Space Program.

They had the Wright Flyer, but no WWI or WW2 aircraft. Almost nothing on the Golden Age of aviation.

It was very disappointing. You have to go out to the annex at the airport to see the good stuff.

I fully concur with OG's post. The Udvar-Hazy Center is what the old Smithsonian A&S Museum USED to be. There's no doubt that the focus of the main museum has changed.
