They actually used to use a pick/comb that had a bubble level built into it, back when the flat-top hair style re-appeared in the 80's.

I had a friend who was this amazing artist.Mind blowing stuff he would paint and draw and it just poured out of his hands on a daily basis.He asks me one day why I don't let him cut his hair and after my burst of laughter he looks me straight in the eyes and says "dude,I am an artist and I will make you look amazing". Well lets just say it was the best haircut I ever got and I kid you not I had a girl hit on me 30 minutes later while we were buying beer.I turn to look at my friend who had this smile as if he created a #%&*$# masterpiece!!!!!!!!

I am completely bald, so haven't had to pay a barber for at least 40 years!
It does amuse me though, that my eldest son pays £35 fortnightly to have the same haircut ('short-back-and-sides) that was enforced on me by my parents on me in the late 1950's, leading to my rebellion in the mid 1960's of long hair.

I’m not bald yet but my hair is definitely thinner. Since the pandemic broke out my wife has been cutting my hair at home so I’ve saved a lot of money!
