Wife doesn't remember this, but I swear I do...when we first moved to Atlanta in the late-80's, there was still at least one television station still going off the air at midnight, closing with Ray Charles' "Georgia On My Mind." I'm sure we had cable, so maybe it was public broadcasting or something, I don't know.

[Re: MarkG]
Wrapping up my Black Artist Songs playlist project...
I've listened through the completed listings a couple of times now (Top 100: ~7.5 hrs., 50 Runner-ups: ~3.5 hrs. = ~11 hrs.). I wouldn't change the songs other than swap the 100/50 listing of a couple. But really, at this point I have almost 200 must-haves in my final combined playlist, so I'll probably cap it there (Top 100/100 Runner-ups).
I agree with wife that we need to test the final 200 on a road trip. She'll probably add a few I've missed, possibly from one of her LPs (I know I missed a favorite Lou Rawls, oops)...
I also need to add a few off of Lionel Ritchie's "Can't Slow Down" album (I'll get grief if some of those are missing).
++++++++++
And with that, I'll close my initial participation with an absolute favorite...
How freaking cool is this?!...
========== As a student at Tuskegee University, Lionel Richie joined friends to form the band The Commodores. The group primarily performed funk and party songs written by band members. Richie had grown up in a household full of varying kinds of music. His grandmother, Adelaide Foster, taught classical piano, and he was also inspired by the country music that was ubiquitous in Alabama.
At a party to celebrate his parents' 37th wedding anniversary, Richie's father toasted his mother, Alberta, saying "She's a great lady, she's a great mother, and she's a great friend." The toast inspired Richie to write a waltz, "Three Times a Lady", which he dedicated to his wife, Brenda. As Richie later told Dick Clark, the toast caused him to realize, "I haven't taken the time to tell my wife thank you. How many guys are in the same position?" Richie did not believe that a waltz would fit The Commodores' musical style, so he wrote it imagining that it would be sung by Frank Sinatra. ==========
I read somewhere that some of these black artists' talents were honed in church. I can believe that, as some of it sounds like angels singing in your ears (I'm usually wearing headphones ). This project was yet another confirmation that I have enough good music to last my lifetime.
If you want to add anything, be my guest.

There's something I want to embed into this thread before it rides off into the forum sunset (a recent repeat, sorry).
It warms my heart that these guys and gals, and Russians no less, are helping to keep the classics alive, including these two songs which are among my favorites in my Top 100...

I'd say Earth, Wind & FIre, Jimmi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson (only up to the Bad album), Chuck Berry, Run DMC, The Fifth Dimension and Little Richard are my favorite black musical bands and artists.

At some point I'm going to post the final 200 (100/100) at end of thread (more EW&F for sure, "Fantasy" and "Got To Get You Into My Life" come to mind, more MJ and Prince too).
++++++++++
Things I've noticed:
1. As with Rock, I'm not so keen on 80's transitions such as EW&F's "Let's Groove", K&tG's "Take My Heart (You Can Have It If You Want It)". Probably still Top 200 though.
2. I really don't like woo-woo-wooing and/or talking in a song (I'm obviously not a fan of Rap other than a half dozen songs, all but one being comedy). Sometimes I can tolerate it as with James Ingram's "One Hundred Ways" (intro) because it's not excessive. Also with Barry White because, well...that's what he does. But as I mentioned earlier, glad to have shorter no-talk versions of some Commodores hits. I think my dislike of wooing and talking in a song is in my DNA.
3. I mentioned "Jeffrey Osbourne" should be "L.T.D." and that's Amazon's fault, I remember the purchase. I also bought a live version because I like the song that much. <- It's the horns, man! I just love those freaking horns!
4. Holy crap, I didn't know that "If You Don't Know Me By Now" - Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, was actually sung by then lead singer Teddy Pendergrass!

Unexpected...discovering a new musical genre as time permits. It's called Fusion (I'd heard of it but had never listened to it). It seems to be an instrumental mix of Jazz and Rock.

EDIT: And wow, what a connection with one of my favorite Alabama tunes (the current hit at my first concert and first date [1984]...with a chick who stayed with me )...
========== Mentor Ralph Williams (June 11, 1946 – November 16, 2016) was an American songwriter and producer. He is best known for writing "Drift Away," a popular song first performed by John Henry Kurtz in 1972 and popularized by Dobie Gray the following year, and has since been covered by multiple artists. He also co-wrote the chart-topping song, "When We Make Love", recorded by the American country music band Alabama in 1984. He was the brother of songwriter and actor Paul Williams. ==========

Date night...wife falls asleep 15 min. into movie (Purple Rain). We stayed up way too late last night reminiscing on YouTube.

Phoenix54C, "Thin Lizzy - Don't Believe A Word" gives me the message: "Video unavailable. The uploader has not made this video available in your country."
However...
I was barely into the lyrics of "Thin Lizzy The Sun Goes Down" after those badass bass licks, when something about it sounded awfully familiar. And then it hit me...
THAT'S PARSON NATHANIEL! Phil Lynott rocked! Died way too young at 36, as you know. Sad.

Man, I can groove so hard to these songs (also their mega hit "Shining Star" [not to be confused with EW&F, this one is soft]).

But I'd rather be nursing my second Long Island Ice Tea at a table in a smoky bar (lungs be damned) listening to live music that sounds like this (the only Albert King song in my library)...

Lol. I used this song when installing car audio: at 3:40 the "He" = Right Channel and "Ho" = Left Channel (this version has it backwards). Alternately, I used the "Yes" and "No" mid-song in Styx's "Borrowed Time" (Cornerstone).

I purchased a couple of Amazon MP3s to round out my library, Donna Summer's "I Feel Love" and Morris Day & The Time's "The Bird" (Donna Summer's " Love To Love You Baby" is not currently available as a single).

All I know from Morris Day & The Time is "Jungle Love". What a great party song.
