I made a couple of posts yesterday, one named "Dawn and Dusk", and the other in a reply in Modred's "Bug Fixed thread.
After posting the screenies in the "Dawn and Dusk" thread I went back to the source code and found the omission which was the cause of Modred's problem, and fixed it. Hence my post in Modred's thread.

So I have uploaded the fixed 1.28c exes and you can get them here: 1.28c exe upgrade December 6th 2022

The downloaded file is a 7-zip self-installer named "EAW_Versions128c.exe" when you run it it will create a folder named "EAW Versions" which contain two versions of the new exe.
One is the "old map" version and the other the "new map" version. Copy the one that you need, paste it in the folder where it needs to go, and re-name it if necessary.

If you do not have 1.28c and would like a package you can get one here:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1zuauDN_275g0QItPcEXvDvJgVAXBJDji/view?usp=share_link

The downloaded installer will create a "1.28c_2022" folder. It has the new exes in it, a simple file manager and several theatres:

I have made an optional update by replacing the ".spt" and ".pal" files which relate to the sun and moon in their respective CDFs.
The replacement files are the UAW160 versions.

Replacement 1.28c CDFs

Running the 7-zip down-load will create a "New128c CDFs" folder containing the "PIC.CDF" and the "SPRITES.CDF" files.

I'm absolutely amazed at what you guys have done with this sim! Thank you all! If not for the Gog and Steam releases, I would never have checked into EAW again. It's been over 20 years since I last had it on my drive.

Here's where I'm at: I have the EAW1.28c_2022 folder working great with nGlide. This one has the December 5 executes. My ONLY problem is that I cannot change the remappable keys at all. Even a manual edit of the eaw.ini file is ignored. In fact, I can remove the eaw.ini file from the folder, and the game still works. I also have the UAW10thDec2021MP folder on my drive. I get an error concerning msflxgrd.ocx when I try to run the DSP.exe, so this one is a no-go for me at this time. Any help with either of these two versions would be greatly appreciated. I'm running a 2020 model computer with nVidia MX130 graphics. I get about 50 FPS in the middle of large bomber formations with graphics settings all the way up.

Thanks again for all the work you guys have put into this sim!

All of my editors are written in MS Visual Basic 6.
Most of them need the VB6 runtime files to be installed, and this is the cause of your problem.

Here is a link to the runtime files installer:
Visual Basic runtime files

When you download and run it it will create a folder named "OAW150Runtimes"
[Linked Image]
In that folder there is a "setup.exe". Run it and basically say "yes" to everything unless it gives you a warning that you are overwriting a newer file with an older one.
It does not matter where you install it.
Once installed the file-manager programs should run.

I did not try changing them in my "128C-2022" folder but I did change the screen size to 800x600 and saved the "eaw.ini" file. It worked, and it worked again after I changed it to 1680x1050.

What level is your User Account Control set to? If it is too high then it may prevent the "eaw.ini" file from being changed.

Haha! You just fixed my problems, Mr. Jelly. My User Account Control was maxed out. Also, the VB files fixed my DSP.exe problem. Thanks! I will probably be back with more questions/problems at some point. In the meantime, this forum is now something I will check daily. Thanks again!

Well, I can manually edit the eaw.ini file; but it changes nothing in the game. Right now I'm flying with the default keyboard setup, changed within the game. The ini file shows none of these changes. I took the file out of the game folder. The game doesn't seem to be aware I did that. Changing screen resolutions does nothing also. My graphics are excellent! Anisotropic filtering and FSAA are both clearly working. The game just doesn't seem to recognize the existence of eaw.ini in the folder. The game ignores eaw.ini completely. It ignores changes to the file. It ignores the absence of the file. It just refuses to be guided by that file. biggrin

I discovered that the game (128c) DOES want the eaw.ini file when I try to change the remappable keys in-game. However, none of the changes work in the end. By the way, I tried 1.28e and 1.60 just for fun. Both have terrible graphics issues for me....major stuttering and sound malfunction, both D3D and Glide. That 1.28c is a beauty though. I just have to live with the eaw.ini file exactly as it comes. I've played with it enough that I've learned the keyboard now. Why change it? biggrin

What is your operating system, and what joystick are you using?

This is UAW160 in Windows10 with Glide. The "eaw.ini" is set at 1024x768 (as required by the glide routines in the EAW source code), and the nGlide screen set at 1440x1080 to allow a border.

[Linked Image]

I am getting 60 FPS.
I cannot recall any reports of sound problems with our exes.

I'm on Windows 10. Until about 15 hours ago I was using a Logitech 3d Extreme stick. Unfortunately, the y axis quit working, not just in EAW, but in everything. New stick on the way. UAW10thDec2021MP was tested with no joystick plugged in. (The same with 1.28e). I used the default nGlide 2.10 configuration and didn't touch the eaw.ini file. I will keep working on it while I wait for the new joystick. Your 160 shot above sure looks good!

I suspect that later versions of our exes discontinued keyboard only playing several years ago. This could account for problems with the ini file settings.
I use a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro too.

Hmmm....testing without a joystick may be a waste of time then. Anyway, I tried the UAW10Dec version again, with the default driver settings. The stuttering slowed down enough for me to see what is happening. When I start a single mission, the cockpit view and the map view get into a fight. It bounces quickly between the two. By the way, the sound issue is clearly directly related to the graphics issue.

Running 128c_2022 with no joystick plugged in, the game works fine. Interesting to me is that the original eaw.ini that came with the folder remains unchanged. According to that file, I'm still using a joystick.

All this is rather odd to me, although I haven't been around the game as long as MrJelly.

A dumb question maybe but you only have the joystick plugged in besides the keyboard and mouse, right? No other game controllers?

Since you are using the same joystick as Jel, theoretically, the eaw.INI file he sends with the game should work right away with your joystick since it is the keybinds he uses?

Another random question, when you deleted/removed/renamed the eaw.INI file and then started the game, did some things in it and then quit the game, did it make a new eaw.INI file? It should have.

Hello CaptJ, nothing ever plugged in other than mouse, keyboard, Extreme 3D joystick. Right now, it's just mouse and keyboard. My joystick worked correctly from the beginning. I just couldn't change the remappable keys. No new eaw.ini file has been made by the game. I took the file out of the game to try to make that happen. No luck.

Gotcha.

Interesting.

Another question. Where did you put the install folder/files? Fwiw, mine are in a folder under My Documents. I ask because I have heard some locations Windows has more locked down than others for reading/writing/modifications.

I have my several EAW folders on my desktop. I just tried "UAW160Simple". It works!

I have several playable version folders now. I seem to be able to interact with the eaw.ini in all of them. Remappable keys is still an issue however. A new problem is that I seem to have lost my FPS counter. Wasn't that Control+R?? In folder 1.28c_2022 there is a minor mixup with the in-game graphics settings. "Virtual Cockpit Gauges ON/OFF" is really the propeller, and "Show Propeller in Cockpit" is really the gauges (the needles).

Edit: I now have 1.28c_2022, 1.28e bare, UAW10thDec2021MP, and UAW160Simple all running well on Windows 10 with nGlide 2.10. The only problem remaining is that I cannot remap the keys in any of these versions from within the game. Tomorrow I will try to manually edit the remappable section of the ini file. Oh, and where is all that info in the top right corner? I can't get it to show any more.

Edit: Control+G for top right corner info.

Edit: Remappable keys successfully changed in the eaw.ini file. I now have a new hobby! Thanks again to all who have worked on this game over the last couple decades. You have given an old man something to look forward to every day.

New Logitech Extreme 3D Pro working well. Be advised, do NOT install the latest Logitech driver. You won't be able to calibrate the joystick!
