Lennon’s murder is the earliest high profile assassination that I remember. I was 8 at the time.

Meh, not a fan.

I like the Beatles overall, though, just not the beginning of one of his songs.

He certainly had his share of contradictions and he was far from being an ideal husband if you ever read the stuff Cynthia Lennon wrote about her life with him but I’ve come to terms with separating the art from the personal life of the artist in most cases. Heck, my favorite classical composer of all time is Richard Wagner even though personally he was quite a scoundrel, debtor, womanizer and just general “a$$hole”.

Wow, only 2 of us responded to NFB's post. I guess John Lennon ain't as popular as he used to be.

I was in High School, it was pretty shocking that some twisted individual would kill a celebrity to impress Jodie Foster now it's almost commonplace for young people to think this way which is even more shocking.

So, a wild guess would be "Imagine"? smile

is there much left to say? If you’re old enough to have lived and cared on that day (I am, and I did) it is 42 years ago and in the meantime I’ve lost a brunch of people who I knew and loved dearly which has a way of putting life in perspective.

The music of The Beatles and their individual contributions post break-up is there to enjoy if one wishes so.

Becoming older and more critical,I realize that were he alive today he would perhaps be parroting the narrative or be cancelled, thinking the former more likely. For myself I have had to separate the artist from the person.

Most of his political activism to me seems gratuitous, He was out/in of destruction, and his sneaking the Communist Manifesto by the masses with a pretty melody, was possibly the greatest disservice to Humanity.

Probably due to his childhood traumas, and possibly due to addiction to drugs he was completely f… messed up. and unable to function without Yoko Ono as puppeteer.

It’s telling that he was outright killed, and George nearly, by deranged “fans” after living years in the Beatle Golden Cage and fearing for their lives from an age where normal people are starting to sette down and start families. Who on Earth would wish to become “Toppermost of the Poppermost”?

May he and George rest in peace.

Excellent post McGonigle!

@ Mr_Blastman - I've been aware of the outright irony and contradictions with "Imagine" since the first time I listened to the song when I was in high school. As McGonigle alluded to, the pretty melody has a way of disguising those aspects to some extent.
