I just happened to notice this one sitting in one of my bookcases, I had forgot that I had read it over the summer. What a great book, what a man. The US / Allies were so lucky to have a man of his skill, experience and temperament at a critical time in history.

No doubt about that. I visited the National Museum of the Pacific War and read Nimitz at War by Craig Symonds. Nimitz was quite possibly the perfect guy for the job.

Nimitz had quite an interesting life even before WWII. He spoke fluent German and spent some time in Germany before WW I doing some kind of engineering apprenticeship.

He was the US Navys' foremost diesel power expert at the time.

He even designed and helped install diesel engines. Spent time in Japan and started his career in submarines. I'd recommend ready just about any book on him or if you're in Fredericksburg, Texas go to the museum.
