The only requirement is that the game must have been released in 2022.

By FAR, I give the trophy to ELDEN RING. Not only is this my game of the year for 2022 but it's the best fantasy RPG I've ever played. This has unseated Skyrim for me.

Honorable mentions go to:

Sniper Elite 5
Tiny Tina's Wonderlands
Dying Light 2

Thanks for the insight. It was already on my "Steam wish list". Now, I'll make sure to buy it when the price drops.

If you do buy it, be prepared to be immersed in a very unique fantasy world but also be prepared to die a lot. biggrin

I don't have one I'm afraid. The only game I play regularly was released in 2015.

That's the state of my gaming career, I guess it happens when you get older frown

The only 3 games I played that came out in 2022 were Mount and Blade Bannerlord, The Ascent and Warhammer 40K Darktide. None of them are bad games, but I don't know that I'd call them game of the year material.
If I had to pick, I guess it would have to be Bannerlord.

Elden Ring because:

a) I bought Bannerlord in 2020 Early Access and have by and far played the snot out of the game and love it immensely.

b) X4 came out in 2018 so there's no way I can nominate that, despite how much time I have spent already. So this game goes in the bona-fide classic category of best space games of all time.

Elden Ring is awesome. Do yourself a favor Panzer and check out the other 'Souls games. The first one is absolutely incredible, Dark Souls 1, and what got me hooked on the franchise originally.

I'll look into the Dark Souls series. When did the first one come out? Does it look graphically outdated? I know Dark Souls 3 came out only a couple years ago so that one should still look pretty good.

Dark Souls 1 came out in 2012, but there's a remastered version that was released in 2018 that addresses some issues of the original port. Each game is different and makes them unique:

Dark Souls 1: Huge, sprawling, interconnected world both horizontally and vertically. Whatever you see you can visit. Secrets are everywhere. One of the best aRPGs of all time.

Dark Souls 2: Hub based world with some gameplay tweaks. I have more hours in this than Dark Souls 1 but... DS 1 is where to start due to the sheer awesomeness of how things unfold.

Dark Souls 3: Felt easier than the first two games, but with the best graphics. Hub based and not as interconnected as the first two games.

Then there's Demon Souls, the only I have not played, and there is Bloodborne, which is great.

I would not let the age of DS 1 dissuade you. It's that good. There are multiple endings and there are choices you make through the course of the game which alter things, some of which are very significant.

Thanks for that info Blastman! I'll check Steam and see how much DS 1 remastered is selling for.

edit: Ok, I just took the plunge and bought DS 1 Remastered. I'll most likely start playing it tomorrow.

Probably Terra Invicta for me.
A great combo of Earth grand strategy and space combat. The big thing is the space combat uses somewhat realistic physics and distances. While this often means you don't really want to move your ships in combat, it really adds to things. Plus a good tech tree makes it great fun.

There are some bugs and shortcomings, but the devs have been pretty active with updates, so I think in 6 months time it will be much changed for the better.

I played about an hour of Dark Souls remastered last night and I immediately noticed the gameplay and stylistic similarities to Elden Ring. The remastered version still looks a bit dated graphically but that's ok. I think the story and game play here will more than outweigh the outdated graphics engine.

I think I've played just two games released in 2022, Tiny Tina and F1 22.

So, F1 22

Warhammer 3 just went on sale so I might revise this in a few weeks smile

The weapons feel meatier with more weight, and combat is a fair bit more deliberate. 'Souls 1 was the first game I had played where weapons felt like they should.

I totally forgot Terra Invicta came out. I guess my memory is failing since that was only maybe two months ago. It was a neat little premise. When I was playing certain bugs or cheats the AI had were killing it for me at the time. Namely, the AI factions seemed to complete projects despite the global research prereqs not being met. Unless the aliens just cheat and hand out technology to all the factions but me.

Has anybody tried "Pentiment"?
A norwegian newspaper says today that it is one of the best games this year.
Also a good history lesson as well.

Never heard of it but I found this summary from the Wiki page:

Gameplay

Pentiment is a narrative adventure role-playing video game set in Bavaria in the 16th century.[1] The player, as the journeyman artist Andreas Maler, investigates the murder of a prominent person for which his friend has been accused. The story spans 25 years and never canonically reveals the true murderer. Instead the player is meant to accuse an individual based on either who they think did it or who most deserves punishment. Concurrent with the main murder plot are other crimes and conspiracies.[2]

The game's art style is a mix of late medieval manuscripts, early print, and woodcuts at the transition from late medieval to early modern art.[2] The music for the game was composed and performed by Alkemie Early Music Ensemble. As game director Josh Sawyer says, "[Alkemie is] a music group, they compose and record as an ensemble...the music they've contributed to the game is either strictly historical or historically inspired."[3]

This seems like a game that would appeal to a very limited niche market and especially so for console players.

Thanks for the info PM.

I see that IGN rates this 9.2 and AMAZING.
May be worth a try?

I wish I could say Starfield but it never came out in 2022. Maybe 2023. Been playing Elder Scrolls Online for about 3 years but got burned out. Now I am here playing WOTR and IL-1946 BAT...so they get my vote.

The best games I have played this year are as follows:
iRacing - PC game (this qualifies since the game is updated quarterly!)
Wingspan boardgame
RAF: The Battle of Britain boardgame

Elden Ring is my game of the year and one of the best games I have ever played.

I expected a good combat system but wasn´t prepared for the level of exploration possible and the sheer scope of that game.

Right now I´m playing the new God of War - Ragnarök and it´s an excellent successor to the 2018 title telling the next part of the Kratos/Atreus(Loki) story. But I don´t get the same immersion like I did with Elden Ring.

Started playing Pentiment and enjoy it tremendously. It is really a work of art. Probably a title which could interest people who normally do not play computer games. Be prepared to read a LOT in that game.
