I guess I'd better read the book, then!
The older I get, the more I realize I don't need to be Han, Luke or Leia. I'm just happy to be rebel scum...

Good movie, at least on par with the first two versions. Decidedly an anti-war movie, unflinching even, with no glorification of war whatsoever. This version spent very little time on the home front, with the exception of the first two scenes. In regard to the lack of character development, I agree to a certain extent, but I think it was an intentional decision on the part of the filmmaker, as part of the effort not to glorify, or even sympathize, with any aspect of warfare. I noticed that there was hardly any mention at all of the main character's parents or even his hometown. I think the directors wanted to emphasize the inhumanity and dehumanizing nature of war over any attempt to humanize the main character (although I still think he came across as sympathetic, but only as just one of the other, often anonymous, tens of millions who were also victims of the war). Spoiler alert: The one exception to not talking much about the soldiers' families involved Kat, the main character's best friend, who lost a child before the start of the war. I don't think it was a coincidence he was shot by a young French boy at the end of the film. Perhaps this was to show how war dehumanizes everyone, soldier and citizen alike. The boy could have been Kat's son; instead, he shoots Kat over a couple of broken eggs. There are at least two scenes involving aircraft in the film, although both were very short. One involved a brief glimpse of a dogfight off in the distance, while the other looked like a Camel strafing troops.

I should add that the only part of the film I didn't particularly care for was the very end, for reasons I will explain in the spoiler below: Making the main character literally the very last soldier to be killed in the war was a little too over the top, for my tastes. The General sending his troops out for an assault less than fifteen minutes before the armistice was also borderline ridiculous. We get it, war is useless, senseless, and pointless. No need to bash us over the head with it!

Yeah I didn't like it, too many scenes with generals eating with knife and fork. Too much up-close FX shock factor (as someone said above), they took and compressed too many scenes from #2 movie in one and the same action, and for 2022 didn't show enough soldiers on screen at once during larger actions. #2 movie = Way better. Just one of those cases where Netflix production doesn't necessarily mean a good movie/series (seems to be getting more prevalent too).
