i though you guys have moved away from that type of deck design....at least i remember reading about it when i was a teen. also why estress the ship with a bomb run test ? if anyone is going to strike a carrier they will use nukes not anti ship missiles and certainly they wont be close enough for bombs.

The deck design is for conventional aircraft including the F-18. I understand that there will be a number of “tests” for the Navy to determine how the Carrier will fit in the fleet and expose any vulnerabilities.

Not necessarily. Lot of variables there ..... who is attacking it, why they are attaking it (at war, only political reasons, terrorism, make a statment, etc ), and where the ship is located at the time of attack, etc. Since a carrier is a big symbol of America's might, even a failed attack would make a big headline splash in every major newspaper.

From the article,

"The carrier is way over budget and years behind schedule."

This is standard Pentagon operating procedure for any major weapons system. There's nothing new here!

How is this better than the other aircraft carriers. There are a few improvements like the catapult. But it's the same as a car of 1990 they added GPS and cameras on it like the ones today. But it's still a car. Those GPS and cameras are just whistles and extras.

This new carrier carries the same number of aircraft, less than 100, more than 75.. Not that it carries 200 or 300 now. It's still vulnerable to an enemy aircraft launching a missile at it from far away, outside of its defence range and before any of the carrier airborne fighters can get to it.

It's not possible for the carrier fighter group to be airbone to protect the carrier all 360 degrees for hundred of miles.

Look up the SM-2 surface to air missile. USN ships which escort the carrier are bristling with SM-2 launchers.

I like the far aft placement of the island. I'm not yet convinced that the electromagnetic catapult is ready for operational use. And if reports that there are single point failures that can shut down all catapults are true, well that's just stupid planning.

It claims the catapults are easier to access and fix when it goes down than the steam ones are. I guess we'll find out soon enough though.
