Anyone here play this age of sail game? My understanding is that it is multiplayer only.

Never mind. I went to the Steam page for the game and found out it's an MMO and the reviews are pretty bad a well.

It is absolutely beautiful. The sound, smoke and weather effects are something to behold. Fighting at twilight is awesome. Also, just the naval action part is fun as hell with the different weapons loadouts, wind direction and managing your sails. Hell, I even liked the navigation where you had a map, but your location isn't manually plotted and you have to do some dead reckoning (you can use up some perk points to change that).

That said, it's a slow, grindy MMO and you'll spend most of your time being blockaded or blockading other players in ports. It absolutely ruins it. Also, 99.99% of your PVP fights will be completely lopsided and just no fun.

I always wanted to try this as I love the Age of Sail stuff but I can't do the multiplayer stuff. To me to have such a great looking engine and mechanics at work completely ruins it by forcing it to be an MMO genre. I remember being in contact with one of the developers with a question I think back when it was early access and they were wanting a full $50 right then and there. I'm glad I did not go that route. It still looks beautiful and if they ever someday come out with a truly offline, single player mode I'd be interested again. These kinds of games need to be single player in my opinion by that's coming from a primarily single-player kind of gamer.

Tried it a few years ago, sailed across the ocean, couple of gun battles, upgraded and traded/sold some stuff. Not terrible, bit of a learning curve in mastering the wind, fairly chill game overall really.

How long did you play it for? Your post makes it seem that you lost interest pretty quickly.

The devs are obnoxious pricks. And liars, who talk a big game of "historical accuracy" with freely given forum bans for pointing out their failure to read, comprehend and implement the document they use to promote their "accuracy".

I have no problem with 'fake data' for gameplay balance, as long as you don't operate a deceptive cover using real historical documents to paper over your fakery and lies...

Historical accuracy, that's why there's Chinese and Russian fleets vying for power in the Caribbean in the game, right?

I should point out that there's a PVE and a PVP server. The PVE server is much more chill.

I played it a few dozens hours, two or three years ago. Don't go PVP unless you have a good clan with sufficient members as mentours. I had some but they took it too seriously for my taste.

Have a good book for the long merchant routes, and play PVE.

It's much more fun with one or two friends. It's quickly fun and stays fun for a while, since grinding to a top of the line Man'o'war gets some time, and you can lose your ships. Fighting mechanics are really fun, even if boarding is not exactly intuitive.

Worth 10 to 15 bucks imo, no more.

Thanks for all of the info guys. Yeah, I have zero interest in PVP so if I ever played this it would be PVE only but the real deal breaker for me is that there is no story-driven single player OFFLINE campaign.

For single player Age of Sail (RTS) strategy.
Age of Sail II: Privateer’s Bounty (2006, Dev. Akella) . AOSII: PB is a significantly improved game over the previous game AOSII. One reason the game is not better known is that so many players felt burned by earlier AOSII and never returned. Akella was known for great games but buggy early releases and never very good at communication

AOSII:PB has all the patches, over a 100 historic scenarios, better stability, crew ratings, and improved AI. It also has a very good ship and scenario editor. Even things like “fire-ships” and experimental oddities like the submarine “Turtle. It does include 3 story driven campaigns but I haven't played them much . The biggest draw for me is the historic matchups, decent sailing behavior, AI, and editor.

Game runs fine on Win 7/64bit. It should run in Win 10.
Win7 64bit Home, I3-6320 3.9 GHz, ASRock Z270 MB, DDR4 16GB, Samsung dual SSDs, GeForce GTX 1660 6GB

The mods will destroy this forum soon enough, they will lock it down and delete the past 100 pages of threads, then regulate it so you can't advertise random games here.

Nothing, I have no problem with the game, just wanted to mention it is not a simulation.

?

The first one is talking about predicted moderator actions at this forum... not problems with the game / simulation. A prediction that you provide no basis for. To my knowledge, it doesn't match up with how SimHQ forums have operated. Not during the years I have been on staff, any ways.

If Naval Action was a free to play I'd give it a try.
But it seems like it's a full price game with expensive DLC, but with all the downsides of a free to play grind game. It's a pity.

Its a funny thing but just the other day I noticed right on the front of my Steam page it says Naval Action has gone free to play. I might load it up just to look at the engine and ships but an age of sail game for me or any game for that matter needs to be single player focused.

Same for me. What I'm really looking for is a game that models the Age of Sail combat and operations at a DCS-like level but also include a story-driven RPG single player experience for the ship captain you are portraying.

The map when you leave port isn't were you do your main gameplay, it's just for getting around. The speeds, sails and accelerations all move much faster to help you get around. You can't use cannons here. You have to sail to a ship or convoy and attack it. That will load up a battle map where the movement is a bit more realistic and you can operate your guns.
It doesn't load up a different map, it's the same area, but only the ships currently engaged will be in it. That's where ships handle more realistically; and you can operate your guns, and operate your sails better.
