Hi All,
This is my presentation of Kinetic's 1/48 Harrier GR.3, making the RAF's first precision LGB attack, against Argentinian positions on the Falklands on 13th June 1982.This was carried out by Wing Commander Peter Squires in aircraft XZ997. We're used to seeing these kinds of weapons dropped in a straight and level run, but in 1982 they were 'tossed' in to the target area. Squire's target was designated by personnel on the ground. The aircraft ran in to a planned release point at low level and high speed, before pulling up sharply and releasing the bomb. The bomb 'lofted' to about 3000 feet before descending steeply and picking up the reflected laser light of the designator. As long as it entered the wide end of the 'basket' of the designation it could then steer to the target. Squire's fist bomb failed to guide, but the second attack yielded a direct hit.

Excellent. Really like the ground representation too.

Apologies for late reply, thanks for the comments. The base is a Coastal Kits product, cut to size.

Very nice model, very impressive display, Gareth. How did you achieve the fine, narrow sprayed demarcation between the green and the grey? I always find that very difficult.

Turning to the sortie modelled, in my recollection Peter Squire’s* first LGB failed to guide, but his second took out a troublesome 155mm howitzer, the biggest gun on East Falkland. Flying back to Hermes, Squire & his wingman discussed “in clear” coming back the next day to target the Argentinian force headquarters.

The following day, when the corresponding pair of LGB-armed Harriers were inbound to that target, the white flags went up over Stanley. The war was over.

*Peter Squire ended up as Air Chief Marshal Sir Peter Squire, Chief of the Air Staff 2000-03. ie Boss, RAF.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your comments. I use the 'White-Tac Worms Method' for a more scale soft edge to camo. Roll out White-Tack 'worms' (fewer oils to leave marks than Blu-Tack) and use them to lay out the pattern, then fill in with tape. Spray lightly and vertically over the Tack and it will give a nice soft edge.

Those little tiny decals next to the canopy must have been murder to get right! That is one steady hand!
