Changed my mind overnight -- not waiting. smile

Putting W11 on my wife's gaming PC yesterday got me "over the hump". smile

Installed Windows 11 Pro on my main machine (signature below). I had it keep all my installed software, etc. functioning (rather than my usual "clean install" of a new operating system). Very easy to do and no issues so far.

Now all our PCs & HTPCs are running W11 Pro.

Latest AMD & Intel CPUs Including Zen 4 & Raptor Lake With VAES Instructions Susceptible To Data Damage on Windows, Patch Rolling Out But Will Reduce Performance

Microsoft has revealed a new bug within Windows 11 & Windows Server 2022 operating systems that affects the latest Intel & AMD CPUs.

after applying the new update, PCs will notice slower performance (up to 2x slower)

Microsoft states that users will have to wait for a month for a proper patch to be rolled out but till then, the only workaround to avoid data damage is to switch to lower performance on the older update.

Only a few applications are affected. W11 is still not perfected.

Lord knows what these micronauts are thinking about at work. eek

I have Windoze Eleventeen on my fancy new Dell laptop, which I like a lot, just more used to sorting issues myself. Had to finally have a webcam for my last semester at school. And had to install Zoom...what a POS excuse for a functional tool.

Still trying to remember which Windoze I started with...

FWIW: You may have already noticed and downloaded/installed Windows 11 version 22/H2.

Up to now, Windows 11 versions and updates have been incomplete "developmental" updates to the incomplete original release version, it is said.

W11 22/H2 is relevant because it was said to be the "finally finished, fully complete 1st version" of W11. Now, that version (22/H2) will simply be updated for about a year (the next big jump may be 23/H2).

Windows 11 version 22/H2 has been available for roughly a couple weeks.

However, the automatic "update" has not been available for everyone's PC yet.

My Wife's PC (R7-3800X) finally got it two days ago. My current PC (R7-5800X) is downloading it as I write this (completed now). My "just finished" R5-7600X new build has not had it show up yet. is downloading now.

I have yet to install 22/H2. I want to read up on it first and see how it affects gaming before I decide to update.

FWIW: In limited testing of my new build against my old build yesterday (using only one game -- AC Odyssey) , I did not notice anything negative. This was prior to and also after updating Windows 11.

I have read that some features of W11 (pre 22H2 build) do affect game performance negatively -- for certain games. Companies like AMD have made some driver modifications in response. I don't know regarding 22H2.

So, checking the literature may turn up something.

This is exactly the stuff I'm talking about:

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia-issues-fix-for-windows-11-22h2-lag-and-stuttering-bugs

So my strategy is to wait for 22H2 to be "out in the wild" for a month or two before I update. That should hopefully give Nvidia, Logitech , AMD and other hardware manufacturers time to address issues.

One Year Later, Barely Anyone Is Using Windows 11

Statcounter says that just 15 percent of Windows installs are on the latest version, which is far short of Windows 10’s performance at this juncture.

Windows 10 is still far and away the leader among Microsoft’s operating systems with a 71 percent market share. Windows 11 is a distant second with 15.45 percent, and Windows 7 still has a dedicated user base at 9.62 percent.

After a year on the market, Windows 10 had roughly twice the Windows market share as Windows 11 does at the same point.

Those who wish to remain on Windows 10 can safely do so for another three years.

I have W11 Pro on 8 in-use PCs in the house -- plus 1 W10 Pro on an in-use out of date PC. Also, a couple under construction but not in regular use have W11Pro.

I don't miss W10. BUT, if W11 didn't exist, I'd be happy with W10. All in all, W11 is a "ho-hum"for me, so far.

Can the blame be laid at the system requirements for 11?

I can't believe M$ didn't see that coming.

I've been on 22H2 for about 10 days now on my Omen laptop (Win 11), no issues to report, at least with gaming.

I think the idea you're (rightfully) not seeing as sensible has nothing to do with what they could see coming. It is simply because they don't care - and they should've had their money-grabbing a$$es reigned in, long ago. People who are clueless have run off the edge of every cliff M$ has put in front of 'em like lemmings, completely ignoring the fact that this is (obviously) where it would wind up going. M$ has finally convinced hardware manufacturers that the whole of computing society will lap up whatever bullsh*t they produce, and every couple years they'll pay to start all over.

Myself, and people like me (I've been working in the computer industry since before PCs were really even a thing) absolutely *knew* what would happen in time. And we tried to tell those less educated and experienced...only to be told by the legion of internet "experts" that we're just clinging to the past and need to move on...

...well, I guess the majority has (finally) realized that "just moving on" is not always in their best interests. Not enough M$ expects to deepen their revenue stream by forcing people to do what they say...now people are actually going to be expected to buy new hardware every three years, even though there's no legitimate technical reason they should have to.

In a way I'm tempted to say I hope people are happy they listened to these "experts" and caved in to M$. Kinda getting what they deserve, in a way. But I still don't think it's right, even if it may seem somehow...appropriate.

My hardware is mostly 10+ years old and running latest Linux with performance as good or better than XP. These wouldn't even run M$. The bottleneck is Windows IMHO beacuse on Linux we have no problems as far as performance.

Microsoft Windows 11 Gaming Bugs Fixed, Rollout Restarts

Microsoft restarts Windows 11 22H2 rollout, presumably for all systems.

Microsoft started to roll out its Windows 11 22H2 update in early October but discovered in November that this update caused sluggish and unstable frame rates in games, lag, and extensive CPU underutilization on Nvidia GeForce-based systems.

Meanwhile, Nvidia released a GeForce Experience [beta] update that fixed the problem in late September

Some folks say the issue affects more than games. Other apps have slowed down considerably also -- just that they are normally so fast one hardly notices.

I would run Linux too if all the games I wanted to play and currently play ran on it.

Windows 11 Gains Market Share but Windows 10 Still Leads by a Mile

Windows 11 now resides on 18.1% of Windows users’ machines globally, which is the highest so far. It has a long way to go to dethrone Windows 10, though. That beloved OS still rules the roost with 68.75% of the market.

Here in the states, Windows 11 is at 21.2% compared with 69.4% for Windows 10.

Most businesses have put off going to WIN 11 for budgetary issues caused by COVID and other global factors. I'm pretty sure WIN 11 will have a much larger market share by the end of this year.
