On August 7, 1942 the 1st Marine Division sailed into what would become known as Ironbottom Sound and landed on Guadalcanal. The epic struggle for the island, air and seas around it would last for six months and was the first major offensive operation by the US in WWII.

I imagine there are exceedingly few veterans of that campaign left living.

RIP and salute to all US servicemen who served in Guadalcanal.

What those US Marines endured on that island was almost to hellish to be believed.
