I still have my first phone, a Motorola 'Transportable'. I'm sure I still have one shoulder lower than the other, lugging it about! Not my image here, mine has a leather case.
Bought in 1986, an ex-showroom model, the first of many Phone Shops I produced signage for, for which I paid half-price, £1600 I recall, which is in line with what the full price was Stateside.
I needed it, as I was away a lot of the time and Susan was expecting our first child with some pregnancy complications. Equivalent of $2 per min. with very limited coverage out of London!
I saved myself. 4 hours 'standby' with 1 hour talktime following 8 hour charge. The model in the image NFB posted was not powerful enough for reception in large exhibition halls of the time.
Saved me from a would-be mugger on a Tube Station stairs as I swung it at him by the strap. Couldn't defend oneself with a Smartphone!

I cannot fathom carrying that phone in a big bag everywhere.

First time I used a mobile phone was one in a company car in about 1991 or so. First I owned was about 2001 after my father's stroke.

My smartphone screen cracks at the thought of trying that.

Mainly in my van or stood within reach on a work table most of the time to be fair.
As it happens, Susan went into labour in the early hours of Christmas Eve. So I was at hand anyway and she was save from having to make the urgent summoning phonecall if I had working at some distance away!

Yes, but with that monstrosity I never had the panicked moment of "where's my phone?"

40 years ago on 3/9. Another 1980s movie I need to watch.

I saw Splash with my parents in the theater. My mom got a huge laugh from Daryll eating the whole lobster during the dinner scene.

40 years ago this past week and tomorrow these 4 films were released.

Of these 4 films, I've only seen Romancing The Stone once and I was disappointed: I expected Indiana Jones type movie.

Police Academy looks stupid. WIKI shows it was made for $4.9 million and earned almost $150 million and there were six sequels. That's unbelievable crazy!

There's no DVD for Purple Hearts. Only Amazon Prime Video SD rental and SD download purchase.

Greystoke doesn't look very Tarzan.

Ah, back when Kathleen Turner was very "doable".

Speaking about "portable phones". We have never used them -- owned them -- not used them. Currently have two nice, relatively new, advanced ones -- virtually unused.

I retired before they became useful for work.

We've always had loads of land-line phones in the house (currently 12). Why carry a cell-phone around the house???

I use my PCs for text messaging.

Our cell-phones are only used for very occasional text messages -- and carried in the Car for emergency use.

I guess I'm not wiser or more mature. biggrin

Wow, 12 land-lines in the house? Are you running some kind of NORAD command center in the basement?

No, nothing special. Just mean 12 physical phones (fully featured) -- all indirectly (via wireless) on one hard wired, physical land line to the "world".

We have two in-house-only wireless transmitters that connect directly to the land line. They transmit to the 12 individual phones located around the house (two floors and 3500sf of basement).

The home phone line is connected to a fierce call blocker. Its smart. It has an AI way of figuring out who's bad in real-time -- without us physically entering phone numbers. Only one unwanted call in 2.5 years -- and, it wasn't a "bad guy".

It's a comedy of it's time (would not get made today imo) but it does have it's smile-inducing moments. & it has a young Kim Cattrall ...

Yup. The gay biker club scene alone would cause massive widespread "triggers" for the wokesters.

Mentioning a gay biker gang reminded me of a movie called "Serial" with Martin Mull.

I found this trailer, but it doesn't do the movie justice. It roasts the New Age mentality of the 70s (and today)

Heh, I remember a lot of films from the early 80's but "Serial" was not one of them. A lot of well known people were in the cast though! When it comes to 1980 my most vivid childhood memories center around Empire Strikes Back, Flash Gordon and The Blues Brothers. All three of those had a huge impact on me.

I wish I was alive to see the original 3 Star Wars and James Bond in theatres. I see photos on the internet of the long lines around the theatres . Not 20-30 screen theatres. Those only had 1-3 screen.

First Star Wars I saw in theatre is episode 1. First James Bond is Goldeneye. Dad had free tickets to a show before release. Had a big tent with 2 BMW under it, waitresses serving free champagne and food.

After we saw Goldeneye, Dad let me rent all the Bond films before it starting with Dr. No.

Dad told us when he saw Dr. No in theatres, it was like no movie he ever seen.

Honestly I still like Dalton.
