AMD Radeon GPUs Get Major Boost, Up To 55%, In OpenGL Graphics Performance With Soon To Launch Windows 11 22H2 Driver

Last month, AMD released a driver which was focused on improving the DirectX 11 performance in a range of titles that utilized the API. AMD stated up to 30% performance gains for Radeon GPUs and we saw similar results within independent tests.

it looks like AMD has devised its plans to release a new driver in the Windows 11 22H2 build that will offer a significant boost in OpenGL performance.

Intel Arc desktop GPUs may be slower than previously expected, a new performance prediction for the whole series suggests

Intel Arc A380 is not “25% faster” than Radeon RX 6400

According to Intel, its newly released Arc A380 desktop graphics card should be up to 25% faster than Radeon RX 6400, except this performance claim is in relation to the price of both cards, a seemingly important fact that can be missed.

The actual performance (not based on pricing) is just 4% better, so almost within the margin of error of being identical to Radeon RX 6400.

R5 5600 has a place in some gaming rigs because it works in some of the oldest motherboards from the R7-1600 era

Quote
AMD Ryzen 5 5600 Review - Fantastic Choice for Upgrades from Older Ryzens [on old motherboards]

The 5600 is a surprisingly late addition to the company's desktop processor lineup given its predecessors, the Ryzen 5 3600, 2600, and 1600, were the SKUs that sold the most volumes and made the Ryzen 5 brand popular with gamers, as they gave you a 6-core/12-thread processor at typically $199.

The Ryzen 5 5600 is based on the same "Vermeer" multi-chip module as the 5600X, which makes it better endowed than the 5600G even though it lacks integrated graphics. The "Zen 3" CCD (chiplet) comes with six out of eight CPU cores enabled, which share the full 32 MB L3 cache available; unlike the 5600G, which is based on the "Cezanne" monolithic silicon with just 16 MB of on-die L3 cache. Also, the Ryzen 5600 features PCI-Express Gen 4 support for the x16 graphics and a CPU-attached M.2 NVMe slot, while "Cezanne" [R5 5600G] is limited to PCIe Gen 3.

At this time, the Ryzen 5 5600 retails for $180, probably due to serious competition from Intel's 12th Gen Core "Alder Lake" processors, which has caused the 5600X to drop in price to only $200 right now.

I've bought four R5 5600G for low cost experiments and HTPCs -- it plays 1080p games at low but usable FPS using the on-board GPU (plays 4K games well at ultra settings with RX5700XT). Strictly speaking, if one has a decent GPU (e.g. RX580 or better), the R5 5600X is best but R5 5600 is similar if cash is short.

Quick look at Amazon prices just now: R5 5600X is $199, R5 5600 is $180, and R5 5600G is $145 to $165. So we're only talking roughly $20 price differences for probably measurable but possibly not visible differences in FPS when using a separate GPU.

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 is now open source

[Via AMD] With the introduction of FSR 2, our temporal upscaling solution earlier this year, there are now over 110 games that support [FSR 1]. The rate of uptake has been very impressive – [FSR 1] is AMD’s fastest adopted software gaming technology to date.

So it seems fitting that we should pick this anniversary day to share the source code for FSR 2, opening up the opportunity for every game developer to integrate FSR 2 if they wish, and add their title to the 24 games which have already announced support [for FSR 2].

As always, the source code is being made available via GPUOpen under the MIT license,

Quote
Unlike Nvidia DLSS, FSR works across both Radeon and GeForce graphics cards, and even works on older models snubbed by team green such as the GTX 10 and 16 series.

So, in brief, FSR 2 is free for developers to download and use in their games, it works on most modern cards (even older ones), and in actual use (vs still pictures in articles) performs similarly to DLSS versions.

AMD confirms Radeon 7000 (RDNA3) will have increased power consumption

“Performance is king, but even if our designs are more power-efficient, that doesn’t mean you don’t push power levels up if the competition is doing the same thing. It’s just that they’ll have to push them a lot higher than we will.”

Sam Naffziger, AMD’s Senior Vice President, Corporate Fellow, and Product Technology Architect

No secret that Nvidia and Intel factory overclock (raise power use) to beat AMD by a few percent. So, AMD has to respond with a "factory overclock" of their own.

Notable that, up to now, AMD has lower power levels for similar performance -- even after raising power. We'll see how this "increasing power level" battle eventually shakes out. I assume Intel and Nvidia will, as in the past, overclock until they win by a few percent (measurable for advertising, but not normally visible in games -- unless one it looking at the FPS counter).

What GPUs should cost has been calculated. Of course, while interesting, this is basically an "opinion", not scientific fact.

Quote
This is how much graphics cards should cost based on their performance alone

According to 3DCenter’s calculations, who have chosen RTX 3070 as the reference point, most of NVIDIA’s high-end models are overpriced and should cost a lot less.

The RTX 3090 series are among the worst priced cards in whole comparison.

For AMD Radeon RX 6000 series, the RX 6800 and 6800 non-XT appear to be the best priced model considering their performance. The inflated MSRP prices for RDNA2 are not really that far from the ‘Fair Price’ index though, especially the middle of the stack. This isn’t the case for enthusiast and low-end models. The RX 6950XT should cost 735USD based on this analysis, while the RX 6400 should drop to the 107 USD level.

One should remember that performance is not always the only thing that should be considered. This is especially true for flagship cards which come with highly sophisticated board designs, massive cooling solutions or other features. That surely adds a cost for board partners that cannot be calculated by framerate alone.

According to these numbers, I overpaid $250 for my RX6900XT (I paid $950). One can now get the RX6900XT for about $750 on special sale (only $50 overpriced).

Intel GPUs still limited by their drivers. Tests showing good Intel GPU performance have been questioned because the drivers are "optimized" for 3DMark and other "test software".

Quote
Intel releases Arc GPU drivers with A770M/A550M support, 3DMark optimization toggle now available

Intel finally adds the promised 3DMark optimizations toggle. In case you don’t remember, Intel launched its discrete GPU architecture with special architecture optimizations that boosted synthetic performance in software such as 3DMark. This is why we are seeing great results from Arc GPUs in this software, yet these cards perform much worse in games.

Quote
Intel ARC GPUs lose up to 15% performance in 3DMark TimeSpy test with Advanced Performance Optimizations disabled

This driver has a new feature toggle for “Advanced Performance Optimizations”. Those are special benchmark specific optimizations that boost Intel ARC GPU performance in synthetic tests such as 3DMark stack. Unfortunately, such optimizations are not allowed as per UL’s rules (developers of the 3DMark).

NVIDIA reportedly wants to cut TSMC orders for next-gen RTX 40 GPUs 5nm wafers amid lower demand

Both AMD and NVIDIA are revising their TSMC orders, reports DigiTimes. The website citing their industry sources claims that Apple, AMD and NVIDIA all wish to change their orders. AMD reportedly wants to lower its 7/6nm wafer orders while NVIDIA is now facing a problem of over saturated GPU market and possibly lower demand for next-gen GPUs.

NVIDIA now has a large stock of GeForce RTX 30 graphics cards for sale, yet the company is [not] willing to lower the price just yet.

NVIDIA is one of the companies that made prepayments to TSMC for their 5nm wafers. Unfortunately for NVIDIA, TSMC is not willing to make concessions. .. it’s NVIDIA’s problem to find customers for TSMC vacated production capacity

The market situation has been reflected in lower stock price for AMD and NVIDIA. Both stocks have dropped by almost 50% in just 6 months time.

If one is looking for a "dirt cheap" Nvidia GPU:

Quote
NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 1630 Graphics Card for $169 Is An Identically Copy of 2016’s $139 GTX 1050 Ti, As Far As Performance Is Concerned

NVIDIA released the company's new low-budget GeForce GTX 1630 graphics card a few days ago, retailing for $169. Through the testing done by tech outlets such as Guru3D and TechPowerUP, we have found out that the new GPU is not only slower than the AMD Radeon RX 6400 RDNA 2-based GPU but it is identical to a 2016 GPU released by NVIDIA, the GTX 1050 Ti, in terms of performance.

the performance lacks when placed against titles like Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, Control, and Cyberpunk 2077, which are all graphically demanding.

FWIW: Our home's main HTPC (4K screen) uses an RX6500XT -- currently $175 at Newegg. It plays my graphically demanding games just adequately at 2K (to my eyes) -- haven't tried Cyberpunk with it.

A substantial interview with AMD Vice President confirms what we already knew about AMD GPUs and CPUs. AMD increases performance while trying to reduce power used -- and succeeds. Nvidia and Intel GPU circuitry is actually slightly "behind" -- they overclock to get competitive results. Seems Intel GPU hardware development is being headed by a Software guru.

Quote
AMD’s [Vice] President Talks GPU Efficiency, Power Targets, Chiplets, Cache & How NVIDIA & Intel Stack Up To Them, Says Raja Koduri Is A Visonary

A few years ago, AMD laid out an ambitious goal of hitting 25x performance efficiency by 2020, and the company actually achieved it.

Now, the company is taking things further, achieving a 30x efficiency growth by 2025 or just 3 years from now.

the company expects GPUs to hit over 600W TDP figures even before 2025. The company states that 'Power consumption is exploding since demand [for FPS] is outstripping the gains'. To address this, AMD has a few key technologies up its sleeves that will allow them to ship a GPU that's compelling in both [FPS] performance and wattage versus the competition.

It can already be seen in RDNA 2 which hits over 2.5 GHz clock speeds while retaining a lower wattage than its direct competition from NVIDIA.

The AMD President states that Raja [Head of Intel GPU development -- formerly with AMD] was more of a software guy than a Silicon techie but he really helped improve AMD's software side of things along with the gaming features

NVIDIA DLSS is now available in over 200 games and apps, AMD FSR at 110

AMD celebrates a one-year anniversary of its FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution) technology. [AMD] already has 110 games support FSR 1.0 and FSR 2.0 or confirmed to support in the future.

AMD FSR 2.0 support is spreading rapidly after the company released its technology as an open source alternative to DLSS.

Other articles indicate that "open source" (i.e. Free to use) AMD FSR2.0 is easier/cheaper to use than DLSS and works about as well (when properly implemented).

Other articles and NexusMods files also indicate some games have preliminary "amateur" FSR2.0 mods -- that work -- e.g. Cyberpunk 2077.

AMD pushes to optimize shaders in gaming with new GPU chiplet patent

AMD recently published a patent for spreading the load from rendering across several GPU chiplets. A game scene is divided into individual blocks and distributed to the chiplets to optimize the utilization of the shaders in games. Two-level chiplet binning is used for this.

Dropping prices. Maybe insiders know we won't want current cards after we see the new ones coming out in the Fall (I hope).

GPU price crash in China, GeForce and Radeon cards now sold for 20% under MSRP, flagship models at -38%

... MSRPs are literally now being ignored, and graphics cards are sold for much less.
