We have talked about many war movies with many opinions on practical effects. I for one, tend to remember A Bridge Too Far as the best practical effects war movie, but now I realize that I have somehow taken Apocalypse Now for granted -- overlooked even. Watching this has made me realize just how much work and risk went into this great film.
Really worth the watch. After watching this, I'm going to have to re-watch (for the 10th or 12th time at least) Apocalypse Now.

The original theatrical version or Redux? I prefer the original theatrical version because I think the added scenes in Redux totally drag down the pacing. I can completely see why Coppola cut out those scenes originally.

I agree on Redux. I have both and the original moves better. I always like extra scenes, but the pacing on Redux is off a bit.

I like extra scenes as well and it's been my experience that the vast majority of extended versions are better than the theatrical version but there have been a few rare instances where the extended version actually reduced the quality of the movie. Apocalypse Now is one example and another one is Amadeus.

Oh yes, the making of that movie was EPIC in both good ways and bad ways. I remember seeing an interview with Lawrence Fishburne where he said the drug use on set was quite rampant. Apocalypse was his very first movie too!
