Now the most exalted title in traditional English sports has fallen to a plucky lass who doesn't mind getting a bit grubby from North Carolina. Congratulations to her. She must of been confident of the win to come all that way, but how did she train over there?
I've stopped to look at this hill not so far from me and it is a good deal steeper than it looks in media footage!

I would end up with several broken bones and torn ligaments if I tried that sport.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB. The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed. There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

Parts of North Carolina are quite hilly and even mountainous, not unlike parts of Scotland, so she probably had several hills to choose from--plus lots of beer!

Yes, western NC has a lot of mountains indeed.
“Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you.”
Grew up ~10 miles away so know how steep it is, there's a few other local 'traditions' (most seem to be really Victorian reinventions) involving May day cheese rolling in the area- tho not as 'extreme'-except the excuse for a pissup
Interesting to see how it has grown from a very local thing to an 'international' event
"There are two things that are infinite: The Universe and Human Stupidity. And I'm not even sure about the Universe." - Einstein
I knew that NC had hills, but I was wondering at the local peoples' reaction to seeing a young woman chasing a cheese down them!
Well, we don't know her training regimen. She could have used a tire or some other substitute for the cheese wheel. Or, just practiced rapidly falling down steep hills.
Either way, it probably looked strange to any observers of that training.
WHOA. Long time, no see Piper. I thought you had left SimHQ?

The French get blamed for tennis. Today it sounds like the players are trying to have an organisms on the court.

When the players are young attractive women that doesn't bother me one bit.

Do you have a hairy palm?

Not at all. And yourself?

Women's volleyball is pretty good too.

I'll have to decline to agree, as I think volleyball's a poor sport, just this side of badminton actually. I appreciate the lovelies in all their pursuits, but no, can't agree about women's volleyball.
Of all the sports I watch, tennis is the only one where I enjoy the women's game. And it's not down only to the *soft factors*, ahem, but that I enjoy the competition.
But women's football (soccer), racing, basketball, hockey, golf, you name it, not interested at all.
I will watch the Olympics. Well I skipped China altogether. But watching the Olympics is more out of patriotism than interest in the competition on display. Like I will root for the USWNT in soccer, but there's zero chance I'd ever watch a club match.
No, now go away or I shall taunt you a second time!

I do thank the English though for "Rounders" which heavily inspired Abner Doubleday when he refined the sport known as "Baseball" for Americans.

Yeah, women's tennis is the only women's sport I like watching.
Keep grunting ladies, hit it harder.
Maria is the only tennis player I pay attention to
Anna Kournikova ? Eugenie Bouchard ?
Ah yes, Anna Kournikova. I remember in the very early days of The Daily Show, their sports segment was just the Anna Kournikova shot of the day, which was just a shot of here bending over as she gets ready to either make or receive a serve.
Also, when I played Texas Hold 'em we would call a pocket Ace King the Anna Kournikova hand because it looks pretty, but rarely wins.

You could have also called it the Danica Patrick hand.

And for your erudition, just last week we had the first "Cotswold Olimpicks", since Covid Pandemic. A traditional event that predates the Modern Olympic Games by nearly 300 years. The most popular event, 'Shin Kicking'.

I feel pain just by reading “shin kicking”.
