He wrote many brilliant film scores but for me his magnum opus will always be his score for Blade Runner. I have the 2 CD Blade Runner set and I'd say I listen to it at least three or four times a year.

He certainly made some very memorable music. I love the film and score of Chariots of Fire. A couple of years ago I watched "The Bounty" for the first time and it was quite good. My attention was immediately captured by the opening music only to soon see in the opening credits that it was written by Vangelis. There are some really good, foreboding, sort of trepidation building tracks in that. I always liked the movie 1492 Conquest of Paradise and it also has a great score that helps make the movie make it more than what it is in of itself. Its wonderful how a beautifuly written, handcrafted score can elevate the visuals and themes of a movie to something more.

I'd be curious to listen to some of his work from the Greek films that article mentions as well as I have yet to see Blade Runner.

Whilst I think that his music for Blade Runner is without equal, Mythodea (Music for the NASA Mission: 2001 Mars Odyssey) is even better and as far as I know has only been performed live twice. Once in 1993 and then in 2001.

Not only is the music beautiful, it's quite the visual treat too.
