I probably more in the "Why not both?" camp.
As annoyed as I am with most Bethesda games, I still play the hell out of them and enjoy them. And skyrim, or fallout, in space sounds awesome.
On the other hand, I mostly play the crap out of them because they've been so mod friendly in the past, but with the latest versions of Skyrim, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, they've been getting less so.

Reminds me of single player Star Citizen with lower res terrain meshes.

I'll hold off until I get a good feeling about it, which I currently don't have. I don't have a bad feeling about it, but that's not enough to get me interested nowadays. I don't wish to invest into a No Man's Skyrim.

No game is perfect, that's a given, but I've enjoyed every Bethesda game I've played and I'm pretty sure I'll buy this one too.
For me, I'm playing a game, I don't look that deeply into it, and if it's giving me enjoyment and great exploration moments if it's a open world game, then all the better.
I do expect it won't be long after the game is released we'll all be stating '' I used to be a space explorer, until I took a laser to the knee''... biggrin

I'm watching this with interest.

I'd like a new space game that I can get my teeth into. That game used to be Elite until they 'improved' exploring and at that point I lost interest. I still have it installed but the chances of me putting in any more hours is not great.

No Man's Sky nearly became the game of choice but that also fell by the wayside.

As for Star Citizen... enough said.

Unlike Trooper, I've never been overly enthusiastic about Bethesda's games in the past so I'll be taking a nice long sit on the fence with this one.

Sooooooo looking forward to this game! After watching the newest video I am so hyped for it. Looks like how I imagined Elite Dangerous would be (still leaves a bad taste in my mouth how lacking that game was...)

I've always enjoyed Bethesda open world games, and I'm really looking forward to this one!

Me too. They've tightened up the gunplay by the looks of it which was bad in the Fallout games, but it still had that Bethesda feel.

With or without the use of VATS?

if the gunplay in Starfield is similar to how it worked in the Mass Effect games then I'll be happy.

Fallout gunplay was deplorable. I tried to play that without VATS and the enemies had laser aim and would instant head shot. Pretty lame. Especially New Vegas. That was ridiculous.

Not so cover shooter-like as in ME although I'm sure you could go into cover. What it showed in the video was jetpack boosting up and shooting whilst airborne.

I'm watching this cautiously. Elite Dangerous was great at the start but ultimately left me very disappointed. We'll see, I guess. I'm retired and just want to play a game not start another job.

Elite was great until the people started going to Mobius/Solo. I got a year out of the game, which was nice.

Frontier made many, many bad decisions, and failed to realize that if they lost the player interactions then most of their content would vanish as well.

The funny thing about that is, I grew up on the original Elite, which was a single player game. I also played a later version, I believe it was Frontier, again it was single player.
So to me, Elite has ALWAYS been a single player game, and that's how I choose to play it personally.

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as "bad luck.”

The core game of Elite Dangerous is extremely shallow and boring once the humans are removed.

I put in close to 1,800 hours into Elite Dangerous. Very good game but I got my fill and moved on.

ED is one of the best space games I've played... I never went in for the Odyssey thing, it just looked naff to me.

ED was one of my favourite games for a while. Still is, but I haven't played it for a while and I have a new HOTAS since I did. Anyone who has played ED knows that it's kind of a grind to reassign to a new HOTAS biggrin

I also didn't care too much for Odyssey, aside from maybe the atmosphered planets. I would, however, have been squealing a like a little girl if I had the ability to move around my ship ala Star Citizen. Alas frown

Yes, same with me. It really stinks that I had a really nice Federal Corvette and an Imperial Cutter but all I could ever see was the cockpit and an external view of my ship whenever I would land and go outside to the planet surface or outside on the landing pad at a space station.

It certainly looks interesting Troop. I will need to see gameplay footage to see if it's what I want from a space game.

I didn't see it in the video but I was wondering how planet landings/take-offs are handled.

The other issue (a me problem) is that I've never really enjoyed previous Bethesda game titles that much, such as Skyrim/the Fallout series.

I'm pretty sure the take off and landing sequence are done automatically...

So anyone playing this after the first few hours?

I played maybe 15 hours to give it a chance (enough so I couldnt get a refund dammit), started the main mission, did a couple side missions, but I gave up out of boredom.

Gameplay: get told to go somewhere, go there, land automatically, shoot the place up or creep around or find someone and talk to them, maybe mine some resources (why) rinse and repeat
Visuals: dated, facial sync with dialogue deplorable, look like muppets talking
Dialogue: clunky and boring, no humor, like it was written by an AI (get spotted sneaking around by an NPC, "Hey you arent supposed to be here." Duck behind cover, then get spotted again "Hey you aren't supposed to be here" again because the NPCs have the memory of a goldfish. Jeez.)
Plot: find the pieces of a macguffin (why, apart from everyone is looking for it?), pick a side in an uninteresting corporate war, no personal investment (compare with Bethesda's Fallout 4 where you have to find your own kidnapped child, much more engaging), no real companion interaction and boring companions
Thousands of individually curated planets: but all basically desert or snow or boring vegetation, boring animals (even the dangerous ones), with nothing to do if you go exploring.
Combat: standard first person shooter. space combat, standard space shooter.

I finished a couple playthroughs of Baldurs Gate (best game of 2023) and should prob give this a second look. Or not? Have there been any gameplay updates?

Alternative is to give Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty a run.

Edit: just read this article https://www.pcgamer.com/starfield-enters-2024-with-mostly-negative-recent-reviews-on-steam/ so maybe that's a hard pass. Shame.

Is there a good game out there where you can roleplay a no scruples space pirate?

The game is great... I'm really enjoying it, just as I did with Skyrim, Fallout 4 etc... it's the same stuff but in a space setting. I'm 360 plus hours in, level 63, and for me, some of the missions have been pretty epic with great firefights.
Yes, it's not a space simulator, but we all knew that before we bought into it. I'm certainly not bored with it yet, but as with all games, we know eventually that time will come.

Your post reflects my impressions and I haven't played Starfield. I've bought just about every Bethesda game to come down the pike, but am unconvinced by Starfield.

How about Elite? You can role play a space pirate here, and actually pirate humans. I think Blastman spent most of his time in the game doing exactly this. Get a FDL or something and threaten miners until they drop some cargo for you to scoop up. If they refuse, or try to run, you give them the good news in your uber-piratey ship.

Cyberpunk's in a good place these days, and worth another go with Phantom Liberty. I've recently done the same

No, now go away or I shall taunt you a second time!

You can go very dark if you choose to in Starfield. There's even the Crimson Pirate Fleet that you can join and fight for if you decide to go down that route.

What Starfield is NOT though is either another Elite Dangerous or another Star Citizen. The publisher/developer never made any such pretenses to that effect. Starfield is essentially "Fallout in Space". If you don't like that idea then don't bother and play something else.

You can even join the Ryujin company and get into some very shady and sneaky stealth mission careers... corporate espionage, computer hacking, planting of false evidence, using a neuro implant to control others without them realising, and even assassination.
It's all about getting in and out without blasting anyone... very satisfying to get through that career.

Elite Dangerous allowed this, and was quite a rush versus other players. I documented thousands of encounters with others, and each one was different and quite amusing--and often profitable!

Star Citizen also allows this versus both humans and AI.

Ultimately piracy is most fulfilling when you have an unpredictable opponent that understands spoken English.
