ED was one of my favourite games for a while. Still is, but I haven't played it for a while and I have a new HOTAS since I did. Anyone who has played ED knows that it's kind of a grind to reassign to a new HOTAS biggrin

I also didn't care too much for Odyssey, aside from maybe the atmosphered planets. I would, however, have been squealing a like a little girl if I had the ability to move around my ship ala Star Citizen. Alas frown

Yes, same with me. It really stinks that I had a really nice Federal Corvette and an Imperial Cutter but all I could ever see was the cockpit and an external view of my ship whenever I would land and go outside to the planet surface or outside on the landing pad at a space station.

It certainly looks interesting Troop. I will need to see gameplay footage to see if it's what I want from a space game.

I didn't see it in the video but I was wondering how planet landings/take-offs are handled.

The other issue (a me problem) is that I've never really enjoyed previous Bethesda game titles that much, such as Skyrim/the Fallout series.

A guy walks into a bar and hears two women speaking in a British accent. He asks, "Are you ladies from England?" One says to him "No, it's Wales, you idiot!" So, then the guy says, "Okay, sorry. So, are you two whales from England?"

I'm pretty sure the take off and landing sequence are done automatically...

So anyone playing this after the first few hours?

I played maybe 15 hours to give it a chance (enough so I couldnt get a refund dammit), started the main mission, did a couple side missions, but I gave up out of boredom.

Gameplay: get told to go somewhere, go there, land automatically, shoot the place up or creep around or find someone and talk to them, maybe mine some resources (why) rinse and repeat
Visuals: dated, facial sync with dialogue deplorable, look like muppets talking
Dialogue: clunky and boring, no humor, like it was written by an AI (get spotted sneaking around by an NPC, "Hey you arent supposed to be here." Duck behind cover, then get spotted again "Hey you aren't supposed to be here" again because the NPCs have the memory of a goldfish. Jeez.)
Plot: find the pieces of a macguffin (why, apart from everyone is looking for it?), pick a side in an uninteresting corporate war, no personal investment (compare with Bethesda's Fallout 4 where you have to find your own kidnapped child, much more engaging), no real companion interaction and boring companions
Thousands of individually curated planets: but all basically desert or snow or boring vegetation, boring animals (even the dangerous ones), with nothing to do if you go exploring.
Combat: standard first person shooter. space combat, standard space shooter.

I finished a couple playthroughs of Baldurs Gate (best game of 2023) and should prob give this a second look. Or not? Have there been any gameplay updates?

Alternative is to give Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty a run.

Edit: just read this article https://www.pcgamer.com/starfield-enters-2024-with-mostly-negative-recent-reviews-on-steam/ so maybe that's a hard pass. Shame.

Is there a good game out there where you can roleplay a no scruples space pirate?

The game is great... I'm really enjoying it, just as I did with Skyrim, Fallout 4 etc... it's the same stuff but in a space setting. I'm 360 plus hours in, level 63, and for me, some of the missions have been pretty epic with great firefights.
Yes, it's not a space simulator, but we all knew that before we bought into it. I'm certainly not bored with it yet, but as with all games, we know eventually that time will come.

Your post reflects my impressions and I haven't played Starfield. I've bought just about every Bethesda game to come down the pike, but am unconvinced by Starfield.

How about Elite? You can role play a space pirate here, and actually pirate humans. I think Blastman spent most of his time in the game doing exactly this. Get a FDL or something and threaten miners until they drop some cargo for you to scoop up. If they refuse, or try to run, you give them the good news in your uber-piratey ship.

Cyberpunk's in a good place these days, and worth another go with Phantom Liberty. I've recently done the same

No, now go away or I shall taunt you a second time!

You can go very dark if you choose to in Starfield. There's even the Crimson Pirate Fleet that you can join and fight for if you decide to go down that route.

What Starfield is NOT though is either another Elite Dangerous or another Star Citizen. The publisher/developer never made any such pretenses to that effect. Starfield is essentially "Fallout in Space". If you don't like that idea then don't bother and play something else.

You can even join the Ryujin company and get into some very shady and sneaky stealth mission careers... corporate espionage, computer hacking, planting of false evidence, using a neuro implant to control others without them realising, and even assassination.
It's all about getting in and out without blasting anyone... very satisfying to get through that career.

Elite Dangerous allowed this, and was quite a rush versus other players. I documented thousands of encounters with others, and each one was different and quite amusing--and often profitable!

Star Citizen also allows this versus both humans and AI.

Ultimately piracy is most fulfilling when you have an unpredictable opponent that understands spoken English.
