I haven´t played both of them extensively to really compare but for starters they don´t look the same, and ship building Is way different In Empyrion, same goes for the survival aspect. Personally I find NMS aesthetics more cartoony when compared to Empyrion, although Empyrion´s building mechanics are more like Space Engineers.
