I struggled to stay awake in the trilogy myself. If that's the case then I'd say the entire fantasy genre just isn't your cup of tea!

My girlfriend took me to see the first LoTR. I wasn't even remotely interested in the genre or knew anything about the films but you know ... women. Near the end I was thinking to myself 'how are they going to resolve this in under 10 minutes'? When I mentioned it to her she said it's a trilogy. Suffice to say the relationship didn't last. I've still not seen the other two.

[quote=Crane Hunter]My prediction: I'm expecting it to be very well done visually, but be very "woke" and just try to check every box and end up failing because they tried to be woke rather than good. . Or following the source material, which is widely loved and read around the world.

Amazon pay $1 billion to make this. I hope it will be as good as the 6 movies.
You mean three. The Hobbit movies don't count, as they were awful. How one can think turning 95,000 or so words into three three hour movies is perplexing. The LOTR movies were pretty good though. A show based on 480,000 words? Seems like a huge stretch. Consider that the material "Game of Thrones" is based off of, the "Song of Fire and Ice" saga, is about 1,770,000 that has been released--and the last two seasons were based off of speculation. 480k words is worth maybe what, one season at best? In genre fiction pacing is everything. So unless they plan on adding in redundant lines and filler scenes that add nothing, there's not enough here for a full on series. If they start stuffing the scenes with new stuff they run a huge risk of ruining everything. The story is written to 480k words and that's all there is. Done. No more. Not a reason to add more stuff. Now, the series is based off supposed "The Silmarillion" but even that is only 130k words. Here, we run into the same problem that we did with "The Hobbit." I'm with the others. Got any marshmallows and smores?

Got any marshmallows and smores? The difference between the silmarillion and things like GoT is how descriptive and verbose GoT is. The Silmarillion takes a couple of dozen words to describe some massive action that can easily be an entire episode. GoT uses a few thousand words to describe a dress. I'll watch it and see how it is, and hope they don't mess it up.

I've never read the Hobbit so I thought the trilogy was OK. I've seen much worse and I've seen much better. I think the fundamental issue is that the Hobbit trilogy really stood zero chance of living up to the expectations of most people due to the global success of the LOTR trilogy. How about the Hobbit cartoon film from 1977? I thought it was vastly superior to the modern live action equivalent, and it ran only 77 minutes. I saw it dozens of times as a kid.

I THINK I saw it once when I was a kid but totally forgot about that until the Jackson films came out.

I remember many very angry customers at the end of The Fellowship of the Rings when I saw it in the theater. It just ended suddenly and they never knew or expected that it was the first part of a larger story. Wow. I hadn't read the book either when I first saw Fellowship but I at least knew it was part of a trilogy! LOL

Near the end I was thinking to myself 'how are they going to resolve this in under 10 minutes'? . That last ten minutes seemed like hours to me as I was bursting for a wee and didn't want to disturb other cinema-goers as I was in the middle of a row.
