Why does this lawsuit have the potential to be a massive game-changer if it goes through?

The bottom line here is that studios would have to be very careful about using "creative license" when portraying a real/historical person on film or tv.

Things like changing the motives or personality of the factual person in question in order to drum up a dramatic story would be held to a very high degree of scrutiny.

It's my understanding that Queen's Gambit was a limited series. One and done. This is what used to be called a "mini-series" back in the 80's and 90's. smile

We need more of those. Bigger stories that actually tell their story and end. I'm getting tired of some of these shows that just spin their wheels for season after season.

For me Lost was the poster boy for that concept of eternally generating story out of nowhere. It became abundantly clear after a few seasons that there was no overarching story, and so was essentially a soap.

I believe real people and established real history should always be portrayed completely accurately in fiction (and in "nominally factual" stories also).

But, as we here know, frequently they are not. It is too often a clever way to deliberately misinform the public.

So, regardless of intent, I hope the lawsuit succeeds financially and succeeds in setting a precedent that makes such suits easier to win.

I don't like lawsuits but Hollywood has been abusing "creative license" for far too long and now they use it to disparage folks they do not like.

Yup. It's bad enough seeing movies and shows that change historical fact to make the story more "interesting" but it's even worse seeing movies and shows that have those alterations to push a specific political agenda.

I'll provide a prime example of the latter. See if you can tell me what's wrong here:

She isn't wearing the sort of bonnet and scarf typical for the period, the cut and style of the dress is trash tier as well. And there is something else which doesn't pass the sniff test.

She managed to have a ginger baby? How's ya luck?!?

That Farrow bloke you executed today, are you sure he's dead?
Well I chopped his head off, that usually does the trick.
Yes, don't get clever with me Baldrick. I just thought you might have lopped off a leg or something by mistake.
No, the thing I chopped off had a nose.

I thought all they had to do was show "Based on a true story" in big letters on the screen right before the movie begins. biggrin

That is not Nona on the left. That is Beth Harmon. Nona does not appear anywhere in the 7 episodes. One of the characters were talking about her

Wango Tango: Re-read the Variety that PanzerMeyer posted:

Quote
Nona Gaprindashvili, who rose to prominence as a chess player in the Soviet Union in the 1960s, sued Netflix in federal court in September. She took issue with a line in the series in which a character stated — falsely — that Gaprindashvili had “never faced men.”

Read https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nona_Gaprindashvili#Honors

Quote
Gaprindashvili was very briefly mentioned in the Netflix series The Queen's Gambit, in which it was incorrectly stated that she is Russian, and that she never played competitive chess against men. Gaprindashvili characterized this departure from reality as "dishonouring ... misinformation."[17] She filed a lawsuit against Netflix for 5 million dollars for false light invasion of privacy and defamation on 16 September 2021.[18]

Mention is not appear.

Full cast for The Queen's Gambit. You don't see a Nona in it.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10048342/fullcredits/

Actress Anya Taylor-Joy's Beth Harmon in The Queen's Gambit is not Nona. She is a fictional character maybe based on this other chess player.
