AMD AM5 to be a long-lived platform, backward compatibility with AM4 coolers confirmed

"I don’t have an exact number of years but I would say that you should expect that AM5 will be a long-lived platform as AM4 has been. I think we’re expecting AM4 to stay in the marketplace for quite some years and it will be sort of an overlapping type of thing.”

— Dr. Lisa Su

Hallock confirmed that AM4 coolers will be compatible with future AM5 CPUs. Of course, the details are not yet known

AMD Ryzen 7000 “Zen4 Raphael” 8-core and 16-core engineering samples have been spotted

Despite not launching till later this year, the first engineering samples of the Zen4 desktop CPUs are already out in the wild.

The benchmark lists ‘Cache’ for both Raphael CPUs as 1024KB, which would be twice as big as Zen3 Vermeer L2 Cache.

The company recently declared that the AM5 platform should offer just as good longevity as AM4.

AMD: We're Exploring Supporting Ryzen 5000 on 300-Series Motherboards

More than a year after the release of the Ryzen 5000 chips that have been a staple on our list of the Best CPUs for gaming, AMD tells us the company is now looking at options to allow the chips to be used with 300-series motherboards. "It's definitely something we're working through. And it's not lost on us at all that this would be a good thing to do for the community, and we're trying to figure out how to make it happen," David McAfee, AMD's Corporate VP and GM of the Client Channel business, told Tom's Hardware during an interview.

AMD's plan is to keep AM4 motherboards part of the action for a few years -- even after the AM5 motherboard products are in use.

In addition, they are trying to bring older AM4 MBs "up to date". Not easy as the CPUs advance in design and need different MB support for best performance.

Another brief notice of the soon to be released Ryzen 7 5800X3D:

Quote
Now with V-Cache! One Sole CPU: Ryzen 7 5800X3D

AMD is only going to launch a single Ryzen version of its V-Cache technology, using the Ryzen 7 5800X as a base. This means the chip is 8 cores, 16 threads, and 105 W TDP just like the regular R7 5800X, but with 96 MB of L3 cache now rather than 32 MB. It will run at 3.4 GHz Base, 4.5 GHz boost, be overclockable, and work in AMD 400-series and 500-series motherboards.

Who is this chip for? The focus is on users playing video games over anything else. The extra cache is meant to help with communications with discrete graphics cards, offering additional performance above the regular R7 5800X. .. The Ryzen 7 5800X3D is designed to be the ‘World’s Fastest Gaming Processor’ (when compared to the AMD 5900X and Intel 12900K).

In terms of those performance metrics, AMD is quoting:

From 1.0x to 1.4x at 1080p High vs Ryzen 9 5900X + RTX3080 (15% average)
From 0.98x to 1.2x at 1080p High vs Core i9-12900K (DDR5) + RTX3080

Competition for AMD's FSR (resolution up-scaling that is very easily implemented into games):

Quote
NVIDIA AI Powered DLDSR Unveiled; Marty McFly’s Depth-Based Filters (Including Ray Tracing) Coming to GFE

an AI-powered version of the Dynamic Super Resolution or DSR that's been available via the Control Panel for several years.

DLDSR will be available to GeForce RTX owners, as it is powered by the Tensor Cores, and should work in 'most' games.

AMD FSR is a full-screen upscaling technology that does not rely on software implementation by game developers [and works with most AMD (e.g. RX470 and up), Nvidia GPUs].

AMD Ryzen Accelerated Memory Profile (RAMP) technology for DDR5 memory set to compete with Intel XMP 3.0

DDR5 memory to get a performance boost thanks to AMD RAMP.

for the AM5 platform AMD will be adding a new technology called RAMP (Ryzen Accelerated Memory Profile), which is a response to Intel XMP 3.0 profile. Those are predefined overclocking profiles added to each high-end memory module. AMD RAMP will likely be compatible with XMP, but will also allow memory makers to adopt their technology exclusively, just as it happened with G.Skill’s Ryzen certified A-XMP memory kits.

AMD Raising EPYC CPU Pricing 10 to 30%, Intel's Sapphire Rapids Delayed: Report

AMD is purportedly raising prices of its EPYC data center processors for some customers by 10% to 30%, a new reality that most customers have accepted in the face of chip shortages

AMD's Milan holds the peak performance, and perhaps more importantly, performance-per-watt crown in the data center. Milan's higher core counts also offer superior performance density, thus allowing data centers to cram in more performance per server and further lower their operating costs, all of which is obviously attractive enough to justify the price increases

A reason why I've little interest in GPU hardware being sold now or to be sold soon:

Quote
Custom NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 Ti cards listed for at least $3654

The pricing is actually much higher than we expected, going for 3654 up to 4497 USD after conversion. Do note, however, that those could naturally be early placeholding prices:

#1 MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X: 3201 EUR / ~3654 USD
#2 MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X: 3678 CHF / ~4024 USD
#3 MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Ti SUPRIM X: 4111 CHF / ~4497 USD
MSI GeForce RTX 3090 Ti GAMING X TRIO: 3129 EUR / ~3571 USD

I was reading today about Cryptomining cost effectiveness. Some "coins" are becoming too expensive to mine. Some can still "pay off" -- so GPU prices remain high.

High-Performance CPUs & GPUs From Intel, AMD, NVIDIA To See Up To 20% Price Hike In 2022

The report states that TSMC has already increased the quotations for its existing 7nm and 5nm process technologies which will go on to power several next-gen GPUs and CPUs such as AMD Ryzen 7000, AMD Ryzen 6000H/U, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 & Intel's ARC Alchemist GPUs. While Intel will be relying on TSMC's 6nm process which is an extension of the N7 process node, the price hike will be similar.

CPU, GPU chip MSRP prices will go up 10% to 20%. GPU selling prices are expected to continue to be higher than MSRP due to shortages.

AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT, RX 6850 XT, RX 6750 XT ‘RDNA 2 Refresh’ Graphics Cards Rumored For Q2 2022: Navi 21 & 22 GPUs With 18 Gbps Memory

These GPUs will have a very small performance increase (they say) and a high selling price (we know). The 7000 series GPUs are supposed to release in late 2022 -- and have a huge performance jump. So, it seems like one should wait for the 7000 series of GPUs.

Intel's $7 Billion Fab 34 Gets First Equipment

Intel starts to install equipment at Fab 34 in Leixlip, Ireland

Intel basically had to build the facility from scratch, which is why it will have taken it about four years to build and equip its Fab 34.

In addition to Ireland, Intel plans to build a yet another manufacturing site in Europe to produce more of its own products as well as chips for third parties.

Intel is also planning a Fabrication facility in the Columbus, Ohio USA region (down the street from Ohio State University, figuratively speaking). Presumably, a substantial USA Government subsidy will be given -- and the State of Ohio will be making concessions (normal business these days -- States compete for such facilities). This one is not "finalized".

All the above is part of moving production closer to the eventual customers, providing local jobs, etc. A good thing smile

As often in this thread, Cryptomining news because Crypto strongly affects GPU prices/availability.

Bank of Russia Is Prepping To Ban Both GPU Mining & Crypto Usage Across The Nation

The ban on crypto mining and usage continues to travel worldwide, from Asia's crackdowns last year to the United States' concerns on severe risks with digital currencies and the possibility of sabotage to monetary and financial institutions and systems.

They haven't done it -- some say they may not. So another, "we'll see".

No sooner do I cut/paste the foregoing note than I read:

Quote
ASUS Awards Its Employees With Huge Year-End Bonuses, All Thanks To Huge Profits From Crypto Mining In The GPU Segment

[During the last couple years] the majority of the new graphics cards from NVIDIA & AMD were being sold directly to large GPU mining corporations and customers by AIBs themselves [e.g. ASUS] and that too before they got in the hands of retailers

Things are so good for these AIBs that ASUS decided to give out huge incentives & year-end bonuses to their employees, all as thanks for selling the GPUs designed for gamers to the crypto segment. The bonuses include up to .. $55,000 US. The news outlet reports that this bonus is equivalent to 2-3 months of salary. There were also on-site rewards that included cars and cash prizes

This is awesome news for ASUS and other companies out there who are making a fool out of their consumers and selling products directly to crypto miners who can afford them.

So, a big part of the GPU short supply problem are those "Add-in board" companies like ASUS who sell directly to miners at high prices (we knew that, but ASUS is bragging about it). That's part of "free-enterprise" (i.e. making money legally by providing a wanted product -- which is what drives invention and product improvements).

The article indicates ASUS intends to keep the price up throughout 2022. Free-enterprise is good. Now, the gaming customers must play "their free-enterprise hand" if they don't like what ASUS is doing -- e.g. don't buy from ASUS anymore -- even when prices drop (but, probably, they won't stop buying).

Intel Goes Big & Aims To Build World’s Largest Chip Plant For $20 Billion

In a fresh report courtesy of Time Magazine, the company has confirmed that it will build a new $20 billion plant in the American state of Ohio, with the facility intended to be the largest of its kind in the world

The Ohio facility will consist of two manufacturing plants, will cover an area of 1,000 acres, employ 3,000 people and commence operations by 2025 according to the details provided by the company

Another factor that pushed Intel towards the Buckeye State [Ohio's nickname] is the availability of suitable talent... it will partner with the Ohio State University, among others.

More interesting to me because Ohio is my home state -- moreover, two sons and two grandchildren (so far) were/are Ohio State U. students (one a software/hardware engineer).

I went ahead and pulled the trigger on an AMD XFX 6900 XT Speedster Merc319 Limited Black Edition card. I've been eyeing it for a while - and Newegg had some come up in-stock from the XFX seller. The shortage is getting more real, and prices are already going up more. MSRP originally from AMD was $1000 for the stock 6900 XT, and at first 3rd party mfgs. were charging $1100-$1200 for their boosted/upclocked/better cooled offerings a year ago. And $1500ish for the XTXH binned Big Navi 6900 cards 6 months ago. I got this one for $1650. frown

I plan on selling the AMD XFX 6700 XT Qick Ultra card I have now, hoping I can fetch $500-$700 for it on eBay. It has served me well, but I always wanted the 6900 XT. The 6900 XT should be here this week, I'll let y'all know how it goes. I have a 144hz 3840X1600 38" Ultrawide monitor that this will make really pop.

GPU prices remain high. Slight downturn recently. The various "crypto-coins" are losing value recently. But, significant long term GPU price changes (for the better) remain to be seen. Some changes may (or may not) occur during Summer months.

Ethereum has just marked its lowest value since August. This, combined with the upcoming proof-of-stake update in June, means that all new purchases of graphics cards may not see the return of investment by that time.

Bitcoin is also "mostly mined" (there are not an infinite number of Bitcoin -- only a couple million left to find/generate, they say) and price is dropping recently -- show a "double peak" that in past markets indicated onset of a market crash. The folks who "run" Bitcoin do manipulate supply to keep demand, and price, up. Bitcoin friendly folks who show the charts tend to "minimize" the double peak.

There are many different kinds of "software generated" coins in existence. Some are barely underway. So, the future remains to be seen.
