Looking at those shots, makes it look like it detonated on contact with the ship and all that was left was the Shadow of of itself.
Torpedo erased it on contact to have that effect. Flash photo.

The photos immediately reminded me of those Looney Tunes shorts when Wile E Coyote or some other character would hit a surface so hard that it leaves an indentation of their body.

That is an amazing sight. It reminds me of a pigeon that flew into my window, it left an almost perfect print on it, wings outstretched.
