Only requirement is it had to be released in 2021. Remasters are OK I guess, like Mass Effect.

This is a good article to refresh our memories of which games actually came out in 2021

https://www.pcgamer.com/new-games-2021/

It's a bit shocking to me, but I started to think of what my answer would be, then as I thought of each title I was like, that didn't come out this year. Over and over again it turns out nearly all of the games I played this year were released before this year. I won't list them all, but I played a lot of Fallout 4 and New Vegas, that covered nearly three months of my gaming. A lot of Borderlands (BL2, BL3, TPS). Some GTA 5 and RDR 2, Elite Dangerous and many more.

Of all the games that were actually released in 2021 I saw just three I played. So I guess these will have to be my nominations for 2021 game of the year, more by default than acclaim.

F1 2021
Disco Elysium (Final Cut)
Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2

That's it! Hard to believe. I would have bought Hitman 3 if it had come out on Steam. It surprises me that the list is so short, but maybe it shouldn't. My M.O. is to wait for sales, wait for patches and DLC, for Game of the Year editions. It's very common to wait a year or two and then buy it. Fallout 4 and Rome 2 were two games I bought this year, years after release, and crucially in my view, after they were made whole by patches and DLC. Doesn't hurt to save some money either. Fallout 4 was ten bucks and I got 350 hours out of it so far. But still, there's usually a must-have new release that I can't resist. But not in 2021 I guess.

So yeah, I'll nominate F1 2021 as my game of the year! Haha, but that's only because my list is so short. What a year, eh?

Games I played/am playing which were released in 2021:

Far Cry 6
F1 2021
Mass Effect Legendary Edition - Normally I wouldn't count this but the original Mass Effect was redone to such an extensive level that it really feels like a different game.

So my award to game of the year would go to ME Legendary Edition.

edit: I looked into getting "Deathloop" since it was made by Arkane but the preponderance of negative reviews that I read convinced me otherwise. Apparently the graphics engine is very poorly optimized for PC's and the gameplay that was described in the reviews isn't really my cup of tea.

So far...

Shakedown Hawaii (came out late last year but whatever)
Huntdown
Metroid Dread ??

Honorable mentions:

Bard's Tale IV (came out a few years ago but I usually don't play new releases unless they're a 'Souls game)
Narita Boy (This game has style! Haven't beaten yet...)

I need to play Deathloop. I enjoy the first person adventure genre the most, and Arkane's games such as Arx Fatalis and Prey are masterpieces to me. However, I get the impression that Deathloop is more a roguelike and less Ultima Underworld.

Who has ever beaten a roguelike? Not to hijack the thread, but I bet the number of hands up is very low.

This has otherwise been a really dull year for gaming. No AAA release or even A/AA has been able to capture and hold my attention, other than Metroid Dread. I spent a lot of time in DCS and IL-2, though! I also still dabble in No Man's Sky, which is now my second most played game on Steam.

Same here and of course flight sims aren't really games that you "finish". You usually continue to play them until you either get bored or a newer flight sim comes out with better graphics. Having said that, there are now multiple games that I play regularly which came out 5 or more years ago. ArmA 3, IL-2, DCS, TW: Rome 2, Company of Heroes 2, Elite Dangerous, etc.

I see this all the time and still don't know what it means. I almost bought deathloop the other day but didn't. If you get it let us know what you think of it. I'm happy to support Arkane, but I also want to like the game smile

I'm proud of my track record of buying games I actually Like. Just three Steam returns since 2006!

You ever play the original DOS game "Rogue" from 1980? One of the very first RPGs created, actually, with a twist. In Rogue, if you die, you start over. There's no saving your game unless you exit the session. You cannot load your game if you die. The save is deleted and you must start at the beginning... however... the dungeons shift and change every time you respawn, so the location of every item, room, chest, monster, enemy, changes. Even the composition of each level changes.

Roguelikes seek to mirror this behavior, and have become a very popular genre in the last few years.

I haven't beat a single one of them. ADHD is not very compatible with the concept of repetition.

Interesting post Blastman especially since I've never even heard of the Rogue game from 1980 at all until I read your post. I can certainly see the attraction for some who want the ultimate challenge of playing a game where you lose it all if you die but it's definitely not for me. It's also my personal view that a game developer shouldn't force this on players. The players who want to have that ultimate challenge can simply delete all of their save files and start over but that's not something that should be forced on ALL players.

Do DCS modules count? If so, the Mi-24 Hind has been a big hit for me.

Otherwise, I don't think I've played anything that was released in 2021.

The Hind is really nifty but I can't kill any emplacements that actually can shoot back at me yet in the thing. Petrovich seems to miss every time.

The Mi-8 has been surprisingly fun for me as well.

Sure, I'll allow it. If it was released in 2021 it counts. smile

Thanks for the explanation Blastman.

Hmmm...only game that I played that was actually RELEASED in 2021 is Dyson Sphere Program. Enjoyed it quite a bit though, so there's that!

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

Yeah it's strange isn't it? We're all gamers (or some of us used to be!) and that link I put up shows a couple hundred games I bet. Yet most of us can barely think of a couple to list here.

Do we need better games?

Do we need more games that suit our tastes?

Are we cheap, old bastages that don't part so easily with our money?

Are we still happy with what we already have?

I'm constantly on the lookout, but only managed to buy three 2021 games. And one of those, Disco Elysium, is actually a 2019 game with a Final Cut version.

DING DING DING DING DING!
I think we have a winner!!

In reality, it's probably a blend of needing better games that suit our tastes as well as being happy playing some older titles.
Most of the AAA titles don't really appeal to me, I'm not much of an FPS fan and that seems to be the overwhelming favorite genre these days.

I mostly prefer to watch other people play most games than play them myself. Most are not suited to my temperament or tastes - with a few exceptions - Disco Elysium was great, nothing else coming out this year even tickled me.

There is a bunch of woke ass nonsense - also 'premium' content, multiplayer for multiplayer and 'premium''s sake - in many titles that annoys the heck out of me too. And my PC is not the newest and latest. (i7 3700, GTX970 ~ it does okay, but optimisation seems to be disregarded for taking advantage of ever more powerful hardware and just throwing more processing and memory and diskspace at it).

That said I can enjoy someone else playing, if they are enjoying themselves even if the game isn't to my taste - and even enjoy other people hating on titles that are objectively terrible for being terrible.

I fly a spreadsheet a lot - maybe one day I'll use one to make a set of modified wargame rules that better match what I think the descriptions of battles mean, than the modern 'old weapons were terrible' paradigm that is so common - black powder naval stuff.

Still do fencing, which has started up again after a year(+) long hiatus - so that is more my thing.

Tried a couple of new ones, refunded War on the Sea...repetitive and found it bland and terribly average ai. Just finished beta weekend 7 in Icarus and we enjoyed it, tons of fun in coop. Releases Dec 4 so that's my christmas break game and sonething we see ourselves sinking some serious gaming time into.

The only game I played that's "allowed" in this list was/is Mass Effect. 1st of 3 games completed, and halfway through #2. Currently, Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Anniversary Edition (available Nov 11). Of Mass Effect and Elder Scrolls 5, I can't pick a favorite -- they are both good -- but not really new to me.

Based on reviews, I actually "avoided" two 2021 releases that I was looking forward to -- Cyberpunk 77 (I had preordered and cancelled the preorder) and Assassin's Creed Valhalla (AC Odyssey is an all time favorite of mine). Those games might get a look -- if I can get them on Super Sale.

Played a bit of Far Cry 6, and grew bored of it pretty quickly, as I do most FC games. I will be giving Halo Infinite a go when it is released Dec. 8th.

This best describes my current situation. I’m still frequently playing several games that are 5 years older or more. I think we also need to keep in mind that the SimHQ demographic is largely men over 40 years of age so that will have a big influence on what kind of games are preferred. A lot of the games on the market today are twitch shooters which usually appeal to a younger demographic.

You should try it in coop mode with another player. It makes a huge difference. The last FC game I played single player was FC 3.
