Hi all,
The next build will hopefully be a French Salmson 2-A2, Serial number 381, of Escadrille SAL 28.
No reason other than I like the unit's elephant marking,

Mike

Nice choice Mike. I'm looking forward to this build. I'm very curious about the whole engine type and style. A very large engine considering the size of the airframe. Good luck with it!

Looking forward to this one too! It's a very distinctive aircraft

I'd love to see the Salmson in WOFF some day.

Oh that I was back in the dear old PBI.
With no more Triplanes on me tail, nor tracer tracing by.
And no more flames and clickerty-clack and no more blooming sky,
And only a couple of feet to fall whenever I want to die.

Probably one of, if not THE most requested model to be added in to WOFF. It would be a welcome addition.

Looking at the engine.. is that some kind of armor plating? This thing must have been a beast to fly.

Hi James,
No, it's closed radiator shutters.
I'm modelling mine as open, so the radiator is partly visible.
They could be opened or closed by the pilot for controlling the engine temperature.
As an aside, this engine is a 260 hp water cooled 9 cylinder radial, not a rotary.
The engine was manufactured by Salmson, who also made the aircraft.

Mike

Hi all,
The basic engine is complete.
I've added the ignition harnesses to the two rear mounted magnetos.
Also the twin ignition leads from the circular support tube to the twin sparks plugs on each of the nine cylinders.
The radiator shutters are being modeled as open,

Mike

I never knew that it was a radial. Great engine idea, but terrible cooling design. I imagine this is why it was dumped... saved a ton of weight and you don't need water cooling on a radial.

Looks fantastic already Mike! Good luck with it!

Hi all,
Sorry, but I forgot to take shots of the cockpit assembly before closing up the fuselage!!
Anyway I added the rudder and elevator control cables.
Also the cross bracing wires in the cockpit side frames, across the internal frames and on the floor panels.
The observer/gunner seat is fitted in the stowed position, as I'll be adding a figure into the rear cockpit.
I still have some weathering and detail to add, such as cockpit and engine control rods and pipes and the wireless reel wire etc.
As usual, not much can be seen once the cockpit decking panel is fitted - hey ho.

For now I'll be putting this model aside so that I can complete the Avro 'Vulcan' Mk.2 I'm building for a friends birthday next month.
Then I'll be back on the Salmson,

Mike

Unbelievable. I mean you are definitely a Master Modeler, but I didn't think it was possible to keep improving on your skills Sir. Your progress thus far is astounding and looks absolutely real. I am throwing out a motion to name you
'Grand Poo-Bar' of Master modelers. Do I hear a second? winkngrin

Would you be kind enough to post some photos of the Vulcan once it's finished?

Hi Cody,
Here's the finished Vulcan.
I still have the display base to complete.

Wow! Whatever the era, you are a master modeler. I especially like the underside. Detail is phenomenal. Thank you for posting.

Hi all,
I've been working on the areas of the model that will remain exposed.
The fixed in position access panels have been painted and fitted.
I've added the metal support ring for the access panels.
I've cut out the cable entry openings in the rear frame and removed pre-molded detail from the fuselage rear access panel area to allow for adding detail.
This included twin crossed bracing wires, electrical terminal box, a fuselage rib and electrical wire conduits and pipes.

Next is to add the electrical wires,

Mike

Mike

It looks like you cut out a fair chunk of the inside back panel in pic #2, while it was in place. Can you elaborate on this approach as opposed to doing it before install?

Regards

Hi Rob,
It was just the two 'boxes' I removed.
I could have done that on the bare frame before building the cockpit, but the truth is I wasn't initially going to expose that panel.
I basically used a fine saw then scalpel blades to cut away the boxes.
Some of the large opening was already there, so I just extended it,

Mike
