I like Skyrim but the writing is atrocious when compared to Morrowind, which has vastly superior books and conversations with others. On the other hand, Skyrim has a much better feel in combat and spells.

There's a lot I hated about Skyrim compared to Oblivion and Morrowind, but that world was beautiful and just varied enough. It was a joy to explore.

Yeah the biomes are pretty neat in Skyrim.

And the level of dungeon variety and design was much better in Skyrim. Most of them felt unique and not copy and paste areas. That's how it should be in an RPG. Oblivion was my first real "RPG" that I really got into and finally understood their value because of the story telling and adventure. My sister was big into Morrorwind but at the time, though I thought it was quite interesting I did not understand the RPG genre at the time.

Ghost of Tsushima has some of the best cohesive writing that I've ever seen in a game. They actually achieve what I've always wanted of open world RPGs and that is to make ever single mission, this especially includes side missions, minor mission and random events, have its own unique writing that directly pertains to the game's story, world and lore. The Witcher games are excellent at this but Ghost of Tsushima is surprising and refreshing in just how much effort was taken to make sure each quest no matter how big or small makes sense to the overall story and lore and is not disjointed or empty. Many open world light RPGs tend to become instantly stale in their enjoyment the moment you diverge from the main quest. Most of their side quests feel shallow and empty and not worth your time and are seemingly thinly veiled time wasters/filler. Tsushima sets a new standard in my opinion. And of course to do this and make it consistently interesting takes a lot of hard work without question on the part of the writers of the game's narrative and various quest lines as well as for those who actually implement it all into a seamless game environment.

With mods a lot of what determines if I use it or not for a certain game is the install process. If I have to delve into renaming files, extracting ZIP files into different directories, modifying config files, blah, blah, blah then I usually don't bother.

This is where the Vortex mod manager comes in, along with the Nexus website. It's not perfect, but sure does a good job of installing, enabling, and spotting conflicts between mods.

It's a Bethesda game, and they're constantly trying to get more mainstream with successful franchises that are still a little more niche than they'd prefer (in the accounting office).

As to writing, well, most RPG's are kinda crap. The player is always catapulted to the zenith of society in super short order, and Bethesda is probably the worst at it.

Bioware also did this with the Mass Effect games.

But then again, would playing a fantasy RPG where you're just an ordinary peasant or playing a scifi RPG where you're some janitor on a space station be interesting for most people?

Well, maybe not a janitor but you can start Skyrim as a begger and a bunch of other options with the Alternate Start Live Another Life mod which has 1,866.003 downloads on the Nexus site.
You never have to touch the main story unless you want to.

The "Legacy of The Dragonborn" adds a museum in Solitude which you can play as an explorer and that is basically a whole game in itself.
