I was playing a game last night which is made by a UK developer and I noticed that one of the characters pronounces the word "dynasty" as " dih-nastee". Is this the standard pronunciation for the word in the UK or is it more of a regional thing? I'm just curious to know. smile

Yeah that's how they say it, but they get a lot wrong, so I wouldn't put much in it biggrin

I mean these people see a "F" in lieutenant and pronounce an extra syllable in aluminum.

It's called the "KIng's English" and not to be mocked by colonials who drive on the wrong side of the road and don't know how to spell colour or neighbour or programme or cheque biggrin

…or «queue,» where you only really pronounce one letter biggrin

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

I also find it interesting AND amusing the difference between the UK and US pronunciation of "jaguar".

I think you'll find that we pronounce no more than the correct number of syllables in aluminium biggrin

My thanks goes out to Mystery Science Theater 3000 for riffing this film because that's where I first learned about the difference in how the US and UK pronounce "puma". biggrin

Let's not add spelling in to it! Haha

Here are some more that we can debate

Leisure
Niche
Zebra or anything that starts with Z usually (Zee/Zed)
Envelope
Route
Progress

The last three I hear Americans with each pronunciation, so not necessarily so distinct between our cultures smile

Let's not forget the word "cement". If you are north of the Mason-Dixon line it's "ceh-ment". If you are south of it then it's "cee-ment".

I read your phonetics as rhyming with oompa loompa, but whatever, if it's manly it's OK.

The word envelope is decidedly un-manly, so to put such a spin on it deserves respect.

Sevenoaks, England.
Imagine Indiana Jones shouting "water" instead of "wadda", it wouldn't have been the same.

That Farrow bloke you executed today, are you sure he's dead?
Well I chopped his head off, that usually does the trick.
Yes, don't get clever with me Baldrick. I just thought you might have lopped off a leg or something by mistake.
No, the thing I chopped off had a nose.
