I have seen the original first three movies several times and they always have left me with an odd, uneasy feeling that I do not enjoy, nor do I ever want to watch them again. The remakes or newer films were forgettable.

Oh you mean the most recent trilogy which had James Franco in the first installment? I actually liked those but not enough to buy them on bluray. They were a huge improvement though over the Tim Burton film and the 70's sequels in my opinion.

You folks got me re-interested in Planet of the Apes series.

Haven't watched yet. But just ordered the newer Trilogy.

I think the last one I saw was the Tim Burton film.

Ah well, if you have time to burn I would suggest checking them out. I think you will enjoy them. They are surprisingly intelligently written and don't rely exclusively on action scenes.

I rented "Old Henry" on Amazon Prime. It's a minimalist low budget western but still quite well done. It stars character actor Tim Blake Nelson (Delmar in "Oh Brother Where art thou" and Buster Scruggs in "The ballad of Buster Scruggs") as "old Henry". He plays a widowed farmer with a teenage son working a small isolated farm in Oklahoma set in the year 1906. Suddenly, one day a horse with a bloodied saddle wanders onto their property. Blake's character finds an unconscious wounded man with a satchel full of money who he brings back to the homestead. When the wounded man regains consciousness, he claims to be a lawman running from 3 bank robbers.

The three show up wearing badges and claim to be lawmen themselves. The farmer tells them he hasn't seen anyone and they ride off. As the plot unfolds you begin to learn that old Henry has a past that he is hiding beneath the guise of a quiet sodbuster. In fact, hardly anyone turns out to be what they say they were. The final showdown plays out a bit like a Kirosawa movie.

Here's the trailer

Highly recommended if you are in need of a western fix.

Cheers

Elementary TV Show Series: Sherlock Holmes in NY City. Seven seasons of shows.

Finished the entire series last night. Second time through it all -- beginning to end. First time was when it was on TV.

Virtually no episodes were truly memorable. But, as the 40 plus minutes pass, each one is more entertaining than most TV shows -- which is the point, for us.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) movie.

Posts above got us interested in the remade series of 3 films. We had seen the first one a few years back (IIRC) -- but not the two upcoming.

Very well done to our tastes; and, a nice way to pass part of an afternoon. Two more to go.

Fifteen minutes into Cinema Paradiso. Loving Ennio Morricone’s music already. Feel like I should have watched this years ago, but I am at least doing it now smile

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

I'll need to watch this again some day. It was shown at my one of my high school classes during the last week of the school year so most likely I was either 16 or 17 years old. Between trying to read subtitles and trying to understand the story I lost interest after about 20 minutes.

Been watching some anime lately. Just finished, in order:
Avatar: the Last Airbender - I'ts fun but it''s basically a Saturday Morning kids cartoon. Although, for a kids a cartoon it had some great characters and arcs for them.

Trigun - Follows some insurance investigators tracking down Vash the stampede, the human typhoon, the only person to be declared a disaster, though not everything is quite as it seems. It's almost a western in future, wrecked world. Had a great soundtrack as well.

Cowboy Bebop. This was excellent and I would recommend it anyone. Animations were mostly great, clearly they had more budget they used in some episodes and scenes than others, but even at its worst it's good. Music was awesome. Characters were fun. Most of the stories were great and many of them were heavily inspired by other science fiction movies and shows. One was practically a remake of Alien. I'm also sure this was used as inspiration for other science fiction shows and it gives off some Firefly waves with a crew of misfits in a broken down ship and strapped for cash.

Oh, I also watched Indy and the Last Crusade again. First time in probably 15-20 years. What great entertainment the Indiana Jones movies are, and this is the best of the lot, IMO. Can’t think of a bad thing with that movie.

The chemistry between Ford and Connery is absolute perfection in that film. It's really the core of what made that film work.

Bebop and Trigun are excellent, but Bebop in particular is one that sticks with you for a while after you finish watching the series.

It also goes to show that the treasured and fabled "lightning in a bottle" only lasts for a while. "Crystal Skull" also had Spielberg directing and Ford in the lead role but that movie simply FAILED at all levels.

I guess I am in a very small minority here, but I found it enjoyable smile

There were a couple of fun scenes but overall I kept asking myself "Why did they make this movie? It really wasn't necessary beyond getting a paycheck."

Episode 1 of 41 Episodes of "Sherlock Holmes - The Complete Granada Television Series". New transfers from original negatives. Filmed on location in London. Follows the story line of the original Novels (it implies). A preview of the series (included) briefly shows Sherlock and Moriarty falling off the cliff -- so maybe it does follow the original Novels.

As noted in a post above, we completed the 7 seasons of "Elementary" (all about Sherlock Holmes in the USA/England in the 2010s era).

Now we go to Sherlock in England in the 1880s era. I imagine many of you have seen this series. We never have.

In the first episode we are introduced to Sherlock-1880 style. Already, there are parallels to Sherlock-2010 style (e.g. both use drugs -- but for different reasons).

The big difference is that Sherlock-2010 plots seem to have virtually nothing to do with the novels. Moreover, 2010s each episode zig-zags constantly -- until the last roughly 5 minutes when they finally figure things out. Whereas, Sherlock-1880 Episode 1 was "on track" from the beginning. We'll see if that keeps up.

We liked it -- it entertained. But, we do have to get our TV to show it in the original 4:3 TV format (right now it spreads to 16:9 -- looks a bit wide).

The formula was off in "Crystal Skull," and defied some established plot progression mechanisms if I recall. I have only seen it once... and was not particularly thrilled with it at the time.
