Very interesting article. Besides them being ironclads, both ships were limited by their gunnery from really hurting each other. The Monitor was limited to half-charge because the Navy authorities were worried that the new designs couldn’t handle more charge and the Virginia (Merrimack) because she came out to fight with wooden ships and carried shell and canister and not solid piercing shot.

I had not been aware that so many ships were involved.

What has always fascinated me about this encounter is that it literally was a paradigm shift in naval warfare. To the best of my knowledge, this was the very first use of ironclad ships in warfare.

There were some other ironclads that saw limited action in shore bombardments in the Crimean War, but this was the first time an ironclad fought against ships, both wooden and iron.

Thanks for that info. I was not aware about the use of ironclads during the Crimean War.

Vienna, 2nd rock left.
Drachinifel did a very good (as most of his are) videos on the subject:

As an Euro, not too familiar with the US Civil War and even less so with it's naval aspect, I found it a fascinating story.

There was only 16 squadrons of RAF fighters that used 100 octane during the BoB.
The Fw190A could not fly with the outer cannon removed.
There was no Fw190A-8s flying with the JGs in 1945.

To think I can literally see where this bit o' history took place from the flight line I work on is pretty cool. Sadly, most of the sailors I work with, have no clue.

On a related note, he recently also had a video together with author Sean Chick about the river war:

That doesn't surprise me one bit since it seems today's military is more preoccupied with having classes on which pronouns should be used to address people instead of teaching about "dead white guy" military history.
