These are not necessarily BAD films that I'm talking about here but movies made by famous directors which for whatever reason seem to have been largely forgotten by mainstream audiences. I'll include a few examples:
Ridley Scott
1. Someone to Watch Over Me 2. White Squall 3. Matchstick Men
Steven Spielberg
1. The Terminal 2. Always
Martin Scorcese
1. Bring Out Your Dead 2. Kundun
Quentin Tarantino
1. Jackie Brown
Francis Ford Coppola
1. Jack
James Cameron
1. The Abyss
Peter Jackson
1. The Lovely Bones

I watched «White Squall» after having read «Song of the Sirens» by Ernest Gann, which I read after «Fate Is The Hunter.» The finest aviation book ever written. Turns out Gann also had quite a few adventures on the seas, and owned «Albatross,» the ship depicted in the movie.
In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

I thought everybody knew about “Always” and “The Abyss.”

I thought everybody knew about “Always” and “The Abyss.” From my experience only film buffs remember “Always” and it seems only hardcore sci-fi fans remember “The Abyss”. Neither film is really remembered at the mainstream level.

Thief 1981, Michael Mann's film director debut, a dark and gritty synth scored crime drama that feels almost like a proto Miami Vice at times.
It's a well made film that somehow just never received a lot of recognition. I vaguely remember this one which starred James Caan. Another forgotten Michel Mann movie is “The Keep” which was his only foray into the supernatural/fantasy genre.

Neither film is really remembered at the mainstream level. Well, almost 2 generations have passed since they were released. Depending on who you asked, “Ben Hur” and “Bridge On The River Kwai” probably weren’t too well-known 20 years ago.

I saw a really good one last night called "Vice Squad." Solid. I'll post more about in the movie thread later. Nevermind, not a famous director so doesn't apply here.
