One Mom of a friend I knew growing up was first generation American Scottish and she was quite hard to understand, while oddly pleasing to the ears at the same time, if that makes sense.

Back to the Future (1985 -- first movie in series). Time travel story set in 1955 and 1985. Mainly in 1955.

Had seen it in the past. We both liked it better this time. We'll continue watching the rest of the series.

I have fond memories of that movie. I saw it upon release with my summer camp group. You can just imagine how rowdy that movie theater was with a bunch of kids between the ages of about 12 and 16!

We liked it because we were young kids in 1955 and could very much relate to aspects of the 1955 content. Also, in mid 1980s at NASA, I had direct knowledge of "key but not often discussed" Federal Policy and Educational System directives that were reflected in the 1985 "societal changes" content.

The movie brought back those memories and positive feelings and major nostalgia -- for us smile

And to think that now the movie is 36 years old which is longer than the time that Marty and Doc Brown went back in time.

Now imagine if someone today wanted to make a movie with the same premise where a guy in a time machine travels back to 1991 and we see him act like the proverbial "fish out of water" as he discovers this strange new world of 1991.

It doesn't quite work does it?

I had the same thought when I watched American Graffiti the last time - that movie was set 11 years before its production, but it seemed like a different lifetime, 11 years ago from today is practically the same world.

Depends on where he's sent back. Say he arrives in Compton or Little Rock, well, he might be in store for a shock. Those pre-internet days were nice, but we had BBSs in 1991 that some of us frequented often.

What would be interesting would be to see a time traveler jump back in time and conclude, "The present sucks!" and they decide to stay in the past. Imagine the implications of how that might change time if the writers really ran with it.

I watched The Spy, starring Borat on Netflix. I was underwhelmed. It lacked drama and suspense IMO compared to other spy/espionage TV shows I have watched.

I saw two movies last weekend:

1) "Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3" -- This one surprised me! I expected awful, but there were plenty of reviews on IMDB saying otherwise. With a healthy dose of skepticism I watched, enjoyed... and was delighted. Folks, we were treated to another installment of Ken Foree, who, if you know your Horror movies, gained fame from his role in 1978's "Dawn of the Dead." Like true good horror movies do well, this one started off at a mild simmer, slowly building to a rolling, frenetic boil by the end. Short and sweet, this slasher delivered. Great movie! *** out of **** stars.

2) "Promising Young Woman" -- I was hesitant to watch this one when I "walked" past it on the shelf, Blockbuster style. I still pick movies like we did in the old days. There's something fun about perusing videos and picking them by their cover and only a few words on the back of the box. Tell us what it may be about, what kind of story or plot, and that should be enough. I don't need nor want to watch a trailer. The premise sounded done before--woman possibly victim of rape, stalks men for revenge. Simple. Still, I love a good revenge film. My hesitance here was political correctness nonsense. Every once in a while, though, I need to check out what the other side might be thinking and despite my long list of films I could watch, this one was on the shelf in front of me and I was tired of standing in the store. Not a bad movie--albeit the men were portrayed as the worst stereotypes. According to the writer and director all men are rapists that seek to take advantage of drunk women--if one is inebriated, they will all offer to help her, then take her back to their place where they will ply her with drinks and then have sex with her because they are her "hero." Right. Maybe I'm in the minority, but most guys I know wouldn't do that. I know there are plenty of jerks who might, but truly there's nothing attractive about a drunk woman who's out of her mind. Sorry. Just not my thing. Regardless, the movie wasn't awful and the ending was very surprising. As a bonus the film even tipped the hat towards "Ms. 45" in one scene which was a nice easter egg that most watchers probably would not catch. She wasn't nearly as tough as Ms. 45, though. Lots of bark, little bite. Buckets of blood and carnage this film was not. ** 1/2 out of **** stars.

Where was this exactly? You still have video rental stores in your neighborhood?

A proverbial shelf online, with pictures of boxes that I can click on and IMDB by my side to get a quick description at the top of the page. smile

I miss video stores. The best ones even had a clerk who was a true film buff who could point you towards all the obscure, seedy good stuff.

Right, those were exclusively the mom & pop owned video stores because the big corporate chain stores like Blockbuster and Hollywood certainly didn't have that.

Eh, we had a local Blockbuster who had a regular employee who was an avid film buff.

That's quite rare indeed. All of the Blockbusters in Miami had high school part-time workers who had no clue what they were doing except to try and convince you to buy popcorn and soda.

Man, me too. A collection of Friday evening memories (the details of Atlanta just for you smile )...

Living in Post Brookhaven apartments (pretty nice...could see Oglethorpe University from my 3rd-story balcony). Working at engineering firm on Lenox Rd. across from mall (side note: Go Buckhead! biggrin ).

Leaving work in my new '89 CRX Si listening to the "5 o'clock Whistle" on 96 Rock and then Pearl Jam's "Ten" ('91) on my new CD player ('90...a big deal back then). Off to the Brookhaven MARTA station to pick up wife coming from downtown (GP building). Next some favorite Chinese takeout on Peachtree Industrial, then to Blockbuster for a couple of movies or concerts on VHS.

Yeah, I miss just browsing Blockbuster and proclaiming, "Oh man, they got it!" when I'd been waiting some movie that had been regularly all taken.

The rusty wire that holds the cork that keeps the anger in
Gives way and suddenly it’s day again
The sun is in the east
Even though the day is done
Two suns in the sunset, hmph
Could be the human race is run
