Random scenes from the historic mission in Battle of Britain II Wings of Victory. Of the many RAF and Luftwaffe units participating, I opted to fly this one in Messerschmitt 110 2N+AM of II Gruppe, Zerstoerergeschwader 76. Basically I'm using these to re-familiarise myself with this classic sim, before picking up another RAF campaign - though in trurth, the numerous training and historical missions, each of which allow multiple choices of squadron and aircraft, are an almost equally good way to experience BoB2.

This is me at the head of my schwarme of four 110s, part of the 12 that 4 Staffel has put up for this show.

We're over the south coast heading roughly west towards Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight (home of Ventnor RDF station), the targets for the Junkers 88s of Kampfgeschwader 51 'Edelweiss' which we're escorting. We seem to be sweeping along behind the main formation, at about the same altitude - not a great position.

The boss orders us to cut off a squadron of Spitfires who are racing in from our right. Meanwhile, the battle has already begun up ahead.

Throttles full open, I haul my big bird around in a tight turn...

...after one of the Spitfires.

I succeed only in driving him away from the bombers, before he eludes me. Meanwhile, some of his comrades, from 54 Squadron, are also in action. I'm using Boreas's mods for corrected A and B Scheme camo patterns on Spits and Hurris, and his mod to add the common red patches to Spitfire gunports.

Even the bombers in BoB2 (with the latest BDG mod, 2.13) have accurate unit and individual aircraft markings. All mods mentioned here (plus one to enable a slightly older version of the BDG mod to play fine on Win 10, not just 7) are available on the BoB2 forum at A2A Simulations, who still sell BoB2.

More to come!

The escort for this raid includes Messerschmitt 109s from I Gruppe, Jagdgeschwader 3, identifiable by the tatzelwurm marking on the motor cowlings. The one with the yellow nose and rudder is the mount of ace Hans 'Assi' Hahn.

Fellow Bf110 unit Zerstorergeschwader 26 is also in action, unit code U8...

...alongside our 2N-coded 110s of ZG76. As you can see, not only is the BoB2 Bf110C flyable, it includes - like the BoB2 Bf109E - animated automatic leading edge slats.

Racing to chase off some fighters attacking Ju88s up ahead, I suddenly notice a Huricane just ahead and below me. Concerned that he's seen me, I chop the throttle momentarily to force him out in front, then roll after him.

[Linked Image]

The Hurricane is intent only on the bombers. Oh no you don't! I chase him down...

[Linked Image]

...and get some hits, forcing him to break left.

[Linked Image]

Tightly though I turn...

[Linked Image]

...I can't quite get enough lead on the Englander before he rolls over and dives away. So I roll out and return to the fray...

[Linked Image]

...which is still in full swing.

I ran out of time at this point - maybe just as well! - but playing a few historical missions has certainly whetted my appetite for more of this great sim!
