A variation of the range system with no on-screen icons.
This is possible because the UAW160 large maps show the location of planes which allows the pilot to select a bearing.
Here is how it can work
Once in the air check the map to figure out the bearing- 240° or thereabouts in this case:
Planes visible in the distance but not selectable:
Now in range and selectable, but no icons. Note the details bottom right:
The altitude and speed values are useful.
The selected plane is no longer in the picture, but note the direction indicator (red cross) at the top edge:
Heading for the red cross will bring the plane into view on-screen and the red cross will disappear.
If your eyesight is good enough you can follow it and shoot it down.
Then selecting another plane and flying until the red cross appears again allows you to find your next target.
If you cannot find one then view the map screen again and pick a suitable bearing
If the plane is selected and there is no red cross but you cannot see the plane then changing direction until the red cross appears can help you locate it.
If the selected plane is destroyed then the details at the bottom right of the screen disappear.
This can happen when the plane is off-screen and crashes due to damage, or is shot down by another plane.
Convoy interdiction targets move slowly and it is a matter of finding them using the map
Set the bearing at this point:
Close enough, head down at 270° and find the convoy:
There they are:
