Lawrence Seymour 'Benny' Goodman has died aged 100. A Londoner, he joined the RAF and trained to fly in Canada, qualifying at the age of just 21. He was such a natural pilot that he was asked to stay on as a flying instructor. However, keen to join the war, he returned to the UK and in 1944 was posted directly to 617 Squadron - a rare honour. He flew on a number of ops carrying the huge Tallboy and Grand Slam bombs, against targets like submarine pens, viaducts and the Tirpitz.
Goodman died on Sunday 18th July. He was the last surviving British wartime pilot of 617 squadron. May he rest in peace.

Good people sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.

Someday your life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching.

RIP.

I look up 617 Squadron to see why it was a rare honour. Now I understand.

Look for me on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or Tic Toc...or anywhere you may frequent, besides SimHq, on the Global Scam Net. Aka, the internet.
I am not there, never have been or ever will be, but the fruitless search may be more gratifying then the "content" you might otherwise be exposed to.

Soon we will live in a world that has no living memory of WWII, and the world will be a lesser place for it. I have met several WWII vets, mostly pilots and sailors, and they all share the same trait: a quiet dignity, and a forcefully held conviction that the others were the real heroes, they were just a small cog in the machine.

They were all true heroes.

RIP, Sir.

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!
