Don't use HDMI, use Display port for better quality and refresh rate.

Hey Blade, I've got a 10 year old 22" flatscreen and my spotting sucks along with eyes so probably time to upgrade. I'm thinking 27" or so (or maybe a little bigger?) due to limited budget and desk space. What specs should I be looking for? In layman's language please. smile

You have to balance six things when you buy your next monitor:
1. Size
2. Ratio
3. Resolution
4. Refresh Rate
5. Adaptive Sync
6. Cost

On Size, how large do you want it. The "standard" now days is 27", to fit on most desks, but if you want a good 4k resolution, you need 32" for it to really matter.

On Ratio, do you like the "standard" 16:9 or do you want a wide type that is 21:9 or more, but then those take more desk top space than a 16:9 and not as much vertical views.

On Resolution, the "standard" gaming monitor currently is 2560x1440 (or 1440p), but 4k (3840x2160) requires a lower AA setting in the game since your pixels are smaller.

On Refresh Rate, the "standard" is 60 Hz which is what the average person seeing when setting in a chair looking at a monitor, but if you want a higher Refresh Rate, this has climbed up to 144 Hz on a lot of gaming monitors.

On Adaptive Sync, the "standard" on a gaming monitor is either AMD FreeSync or Nvidia G-Sync Compatible since neither requires a special chip in the monitor. The original G-Sync is still better since it allows Adaptive Sync clear down to 30 FPS where FreeSync and G-Sync Compatible normally only go down to ~40 FPS before you see "stuttering".

On Cost, you can find on Amazon or NewEgg a lot of decent monitors under $500 USD that meet the your "standard" requirements (what ever you decide).

The last thing is your video card and monitor are very much "linked together". The Higher the Resolution, the stronger the Video Card needed to push the monitor pixels at a decent Refresh Rate (this is where Adaptive Sync helps if your Video Card is not strong enough).

GPU = RTX 3080 Ti

PR has just listed almost everything you need to consider. I would add two more things to look for in the specs and that is PPI, pixels per inch, and is a curved screen to your liking. Compare PPI between the different monitors you are considering, the higher the PPI the better. As far as a curved screen it is purely personal as to whether you should go down that road. There are a few different curve radiuses and a simple google search will educate you on that. If you have a Best Buy located near to you then stop in and you can see several different curved monitors on display. Looking at them in store is highly recommended. 2560x1440 at 144hz or better hz is basically the new standard for a gaming monitor. Unfortunately 2560x1440 is not necessarily better for spotting aircraft in sim, but a larger screen area does improve spotting somewhat. It really depends on the Devs and most sim developers these days are trying to improve spotting in the higher resolutions, but from what I read most serious online simmers still use 1080 for better spotting. 32"x 2560x1440 at 21:9 is the resolution and aspect that I really like. I ended up buying a Samsung Odyssey 32" G7 Gaming Monitor. It is pricey and has an extreme 1000 curve and I really like it. Normally I am quite regimented and boring so I broke the mold with a radically curved monitor. Is it necessary, and does the curve really make a difference? It is not necessary and honestly I don't even notice the curve anymore, even while working on desktop with folders and files. In sim, well it is curved but I am not sure it really is more immersive in anyway like advertisers would pitch it to be. But it is lightning fast at up to 240hz, Gsync compatible and the panel is as high of a PPI as you can get in a 32 size. I am completely HAPPY that I bought Samsung as a brand and would highly recommend their monitors for all around quality and especially picture quality. I am HAPPY that I bought the G7 and happy with the curve, but it may not be for everyone. I did have an 11 day no questions asked return policy and I ended up keeping the G7, so that should tell you something. The best thing I can suggest is to allot yourself 3 to 4 weeks to study up, compare, READ LOTS OF REVIEWS(there is a purely monitor review website, google it)go see a few and then finally make your decision.
Monitors these days last a longtime so make sure you get the best that you can. I also can recommend Asus monitors as I have a 27" flat screen that is 8 years old and is and has been a high quality monitor for me. I had no interest in 4k because of the heavy load it puts on a GPU, and unless you are sitting 4+ feet away from your screen, then a 4k TV is not recommended. That is all I know about 4 k.
Good luck!

With a 32" 4k monitor you only need to sit the normal 24"- 26" away from it to see everything. It's when you get to the 43" monitors you have to sit 36" or more away from it to see everything.

This is why my gaming Acer 4k G-Sync monitor is 32" (for my game PC) and it sits right next to my general HP 1920x1200 14 year old monitor (for my general use PC) and the viewing distance is the same for either monitor (24" - 26").

Going from a weird 1200p to 1440p helped a noticeable amount with spotting for me...

Yea I was speaking of a 4k TV PR. If you sit that close in front of 4k TV it will look bad, at least IMHO. A lot of people think well I can get a 40, 50, 55 or 60 inch 4K TV relatively cheap compared to a much smaller 4K monitor and I will just sit up close and it will be awesome, but it won't. If you sit 5 - 6 feet away it probably would be ok. As I said, I did not want to push my RTX 2070 just to run 4K as I have been for the last 8 years and still am quite satisfied with 2560x1440 on a 27" and now a 32" monitor. I am sure a 4K monitor is fantastic though, and I will bet you can get some awesome screen shots and videos using one.

Did you get a bigger size monitor when you upgraded to 1440?

Blade:
One of the biggest reasons I went with the 32" 4k several years ago was that I only have to set the AA to 2x with 2160p versus 4x or 8x with 1440p or 1080p resolutions and the game images are even sharper with 2160p and AA 2x than with the lower resolutions and higher AA settings.

Playing WOFF or WOTR, I found that the monitor / GPU is still not "taxed" like a modern game even if WOFF is played on a 4k monitor (as long as your GPU is strong enough to push all the 4k pixels), but relies on the CPU to really keep your FPS up there above 60 FPS.

Hey thanks everyone for your input! I can see a good screen is a valuable component. It's something I've not really thought about much to date. I shall digest your suggestions and consider my options. smile

That is exactly why I bought the G7. It is stupid money to spend but I wanted the best picture that I could get and this may be the last monitor I purchase so I went all in. My older Asus was the same way, like 500$ 8 years ago, but I have been extremely happy with it as well.

My they're not cheap. I'm looking at budgeting between 350-450 bucks (AUD) and leaning toward a 27" flat. That should be big enough. My specs are Ryzen 5 3600 3.6ghz, Nvidia GTX 1660, 16gb ram and I think a 550 watt power supply. So I don't want to tax the old girl too much. She's been very good to me to date.

Thanks, and in the interim my mother-in-law broker her hip, so we'll be supporting them quite a bit.

So anyway, I did have a question that isn't answered, not so much resolution and speed and pixels and all that:
On the TV, I can switch source easily between cable, Blu-ray player, or whatever else is plugged into the back (water line? smile hee hee)
So after I retire, I'll have my work laptop (so I can consult for the youg'uns left behind). If I had them both plugged into the bakc of my spiffy new monitor, whatever that turns out to be, is there an easy way to select sources or do I need like a switch (KVM or some sort of initials). I really didn't want to run the video of my super-dee-duper new system (Whatever that turns out to be) through a switch unless they are 100% non-harmful to the throughput.

Too many questions, not enough time. Thanks all!

Unless you have a KVM switch, the first PC the monitor recognizes when they are turned on is the one it will display.

KVM switches are wonderful, I know because I have used them for years for my multiple PC's and monitors.

Most newer monitors will have multiple ports at the back of it. HDMI (maybe even two), DP, that Thunder-something for Macs. You can connect one distinct computer to one of those ports each. Then in the monitor’s menu you can select the input signal you want to be active. It’s exactly like your TV, except you don’t have the remote to pick which device to have the monitor display. Many of those monitors will let you display two sources at the same time on that same monitor, either side by side or picture in picture. No need for the signal switch box. In fact, that switch box would most likely prevent you from displaying two sources at the same time. Switch box is more convenient because you don’t have to fiddle with the menu on the monitor, but not necessary. As always, check the specs if that specific monitor you have chosen is capable of displaying concurrent multiple sources.
