Assuming you have the interest and the time for it, is there another language you would like to learn and at least be somewhat functionally fluent in? I'm still regaining my German conversational and written skills that I had lost after I graduated from college. Thanks to watching a lot of movies and documentaries in German and also communicating with some friends in Germany, I have regained most of those skills. It will still be a while though before I become fluent. I really need to win the Lotto.

Think we will all need to be able to speak, read, write Chinese. No, no we won't. There's no need for hyperbole.

I'd like to be able to speak Hindi. Then I can curse at the scam callers like a pro. Unfortunately I was very poor at languages at school and that certainly hasn't changed over time.

Unfortunately I was very poor at languages at school and that certainly hasn't changed over time. Which languages did you attempt to learn in school? I'm guessing French.

French and German. In fact I only had 1 lesson in German! I didn't want to take German and complained that I'd be better taking woodwork going on my past prowess in foreign languages and they agreed after intervention from my mum.
Oh,also Latin.

A great language to learn if you have a serious interest in Roman history or linguistics in general. Beyond that though, there's really zero practical reason to learn Latin unless you are going to teach it yourself at a school.

Beginning Latin in High School (I thought I would be a Zoologist -- all those Latin names). I remember virtually nothing.
Beginning German in College (I was becoming an Engineer -- Germans are good Engineers). It took so much of my time, I quit and hoped the language requirement (for graduation) would be dropped. It was. I remember virtually nothing.
During 1980s at work: Pascal Programming Language. Well worth it. The US Govt studied programming languages in depth in the 1980s. Findings: The Pascal language and syntax are so English like that errors were said to be reduced by 30 percent vs other languages of the time (at least for English speakers) -- it could not be improved on. I recently spent over $1000 to update my Pascal copy to Delphi 10.4. But, I don't use it much anymore -- no "big problems" to solve. The last major use by me was on CAGW/Climate Change almost 2 decades ago (CC is far more politics than genuine science these days). Heck, now I'm just practicing Delphi a bit so I don't totally forget -- if I had a real problem, it would take a few weeks to get to speed.

I have fancied Japanese or Korean recently but once I remember how tough it got to learn to write and read Chinese I end up having second thoughts.
Cheers, Slug

You don't need to take full-blown Latin courses for that. All a doctor or biologist needs to do is learn the specific Latin terminology as it applies to their field.

Cheers, Slug And to complicate things further, Chinese, Japanese and Korean all have their own unique alphabets.

I'd like to be able to speak Hindi. Then I can curse at the scam callers like a pro. Unfortunately I was very poor at languages at school and that certainly hasn't changed over time. My wife's father, born near Calcutta in an Army family, and later served over there during the Partition would do just that in Hindi Army parlance! As to learning languages, we English feel that just yelling at Jonny Foreigner is enough to be understood; a legacy from our all-conquering and colonial past perhaps! I'm always staggered how fluent and adept other nation's chaps I speak with online are, even using or understanding English idioms of speech, particularly those of Scandinavian countries. No Latin for me Chucky, being a Secondary Modern oik.

During a couple years at NASA, 3 of us shared an office with an PhD visiting from India and working with us during the Summer months (on Microgravity Science Space Experiments). He fit right in. He was a friend. He spoke perfect English. When we couldn't spell a word, we literally asked him. We weren't "put off" by that at all. We were impressed
