For me the damage done by those films is more... underlying. In the movie Alien, what we saw on the screen was literally alien, a massive mysterious ship, all asymmetrical and organic looking, the ship looked like it was made or grown you couldn't really tell, the pilot (if that's what it was) looked like part of the ship you couldn't tell where it ended and the ship began, everything was alien.

Then Prometheus & Covenant come along, meh it was giant men all along. It was for me the most unimaginative pathetic attempt to try and drum up interest in something already interesting by making it all human-centric, the very opposite of alien. It became a soap opera where humanity is abused by parents, poor us. All about us.

Yup, excellent post DM. Prometheus and Covenant simply proved yet again that over-explaining things and removing every vestige of mystery and mystique is almost never a good thing.
