In all fairness, I don't believe they had 'relief tubes' in WWI.

I know the Belgians redesigned the BE2c when they were building them under licence - they swapped the pilots/observers cockpits around and added a scarff ring to the observers cockpit, they also replaced the 90hp RAF engine with a 150hp Hispano Suiza.

I'm not sure if they did anything to address the inherent stability of the BE2c, but it would be interesting to see performance figures for the Belgian BE2c as opposed to the British one, to see how much of an improvement certainly the engine change would have made.
