To prepare us for W11:

Quote
Microsoft Is Pushing the PC Health Check App to Windows 10 Machines

Don’t want it? Tough, you’re getting the Microsoft PC Health Check app regardless of whether or not you’ve expressed interest in Windows 11.

Ostensibly, the Health Check app tells you about the status of your PC, links to important settings, and helps you plan your upgrade to Windows 11.

Once it’s installed, you can’t even roll back the change. You can uninstall the app, but it will come back.

I already have an earlier version installed. No big deal.

I'll move to W11 when its development is complete (probably not until next year). When completed, it should make a gaming PC faster and have more security than W10.

Sounds nice (and this isn't directed at you, of course), but it's the same BS blather that Microsoft claims every time they get ready to cram another OS down our throats. I've been involved in the computer industry professionally for almost 40 years now, and this happens every time - and it's always (always) far (far) from reality. If you look "under the hood" Windows has many of the exact same components that it did in W7. They slap on some new (often hideous) cosmetic changes - redefining 'lipstick on a pig' IMHO - and push everyone an(other) incremental step toward charging us all a monthly fee for the privilege of using their POS Operating System.

B@stards.

Skeptical? Simple, just ask yourself: If this were such a great idea (for anyone *other* than Microsoft), then why would they have to keep forcing it on everyone? Why's it always free these days? (Bonus: Anyone remember the 'browser wars' of the mid-late 1990s, when MS finally made IE free? Most people are either too young to remember, or didn't/don't know enough about computers to realize the significance of these events.)

The lemmings that just toe the line and swallow...are to blame for this.

Don't get me started...oh, wait...too late.

A not unreasonable viewpoint. smile

Right now the "claim" is that W11 will improve some things. But, I expect the improvements to be small. Like you wrote, not that much actually changes "under the hood".

Since its free (or cheap if one buys a key), and will be the new standard (warts and all), I'll go with the new Windows Version -- I always have. But, that's me. I'm definitely not "selling W11" to SimHQ folks.

Of course you're not - and I apologize if it sounds like I'm saying you are.

Just my own personal perspective.

11 Worst Features of Windows 11 and How to Fix Them

Windows 11 is a mixed bag. On the one hand, many people would be happier sticking with Windows 10. On the other hand, there are some solid reasons to upgrade to Windows 11 right now, including better window snapping options, more control over virtual desktops and fresh design flourishes such as rounded corners on windows.

If you choose to move to Windows 11, whether via upgrade or clean install, you'll notice several significant annoyances,

A fairly long article details "11 annoyances" that affect the look, feel, and usefulness of the Desktop. Some make the Desktop less efficient -- e.g. you need more clicks to do some obvious things.

It also gives fixes. However, some of those require Registry hacks (so, not ideal solutions).

Ideally, W11 would have a simple one-click "W10 switch" that would give you all the W10 desktop features in place of the W11 features.

I bought a couple W10 Pro Keys today. I noticed W11 Pro Keys are on sale. They cost more than W10 Pro keys. Both are easily afforded.

I got W10 Pro keys because they can free-upgrade to W11Pro -- and I wanted to start with W10 Pro on a new PC I built yesterday.

The "Pro" OS has fewer restrictions and requirements to meet than the "Home" OS so the Pro Key is worth the few extra $.

I plan to free-upgrade my PCs to W11 Pro when W11 Pro is a "finished product".

This one sounds very bad for "personal freedom to choose".

Microsoft Enables Edge Sync By Default, Hoovering Up Your Data in the Process

When I launched Edge this morning, I was surprised to see a message informing me that Sync was now enabled and my data was being uploaded to the cloud, to be shared with other PCs where I was also logged in.

“I received email from two people who told me that Microsoft Edge enabled synching without warning or consent, which means that Microsoft sucked up all of their bookmarks. Of course they can turn synching off, but it’s too late.”

The company recently admitted that its decision to prevent end users from changing their browsers in Windows 11 via EdgeDetector is a deliberate crackdown on choice that the company does not intend to roll back.

A good reason to stick with W10 -- if that solves this problem. Also, W11 Pro is said to give the user more control over things like this because its used by some companies for virtually all their desktops.

Competition is good for consumers, but will not be permitted by Microsoft?? Another, "we'll see".

I have not read this entire thread but does anyone have any recent benchmark stats on how games perform under W11?

An overall view from memory (there can always be exceptions):

There was an issue with how different CPUs responded. The latest (just released) Intel CPUs had been accounted for in W11 and performed well.

At the W11 first release, games were a few FPS slower on AMD CPUs (it varied with the game). Then, a fix was instituted -- and W11 was updated. Now, games are nominally the same FPS (vs W10). This all typically applies to games played at 1080p. 2K and 4K games are little affected by the CPU regardless.

One of the "selling points" for W11 was that it had features that made games (all games or some games???) slightly faster FPS. But, this may only apply to newer games that are modified to take advantage.

One hardware item of note, using very high speed (very expensive) DDR5 memory with new CPUs and W11 makes about 1 or 2 FPS difference at high gaming resolutions. The nutshell on hardware is that above 1080p, a new CPU, Motherboard, and DDR5 memory will not make a visible difference. Put all that money into a new, high end GPU. Along those lines, the high end GPUs coming out 12 to 14 months from now will cost a bit less and "crush" the current GPUs (maybe 100% higher FPS -- 200% higher FPS for the highest cost GPUs has been speculated). So, wait for the new GPUs, if possible. All this is subject to change.

Thanks for that info Allen. I was thinking of getting my new Alienware PC in December but I think I'll hold off for a few more months.

Windows 11 is removing one of the "reasons not to leave W10".

Microsoft Reverses Course on Windows 11 Default Browser Settings

After a spat of questionable decisions recently by Microsoft regarding its Edge browser, Microsoft has finally done something we can all agree is the right thing to do: it’s reversing the changes it made to the default browser settings in Windows 11 to make the process [of changing browsers] easier instead of more difficult. Imagine that.

In a new test build of Windows 11, users can now change their default browser, along with all associated file extensions, with a single click.

The news follows a string of boneheaded moves by the Redmond-based behemoth as it tries to coerce users both towards its Edge browser, and away from rivals

I agree with the use of the negative-connotation word "coerce" -- in this case.

Intel CPUs also had some issues with games on W11. Mostly fixed or has workarounds, they say.

Intel & Microsoft Fix Majority of Games Affected By 12th Gen Alder Lake DRM Issue on Windows 11

A month later, Microsoft and Intel have fixed the DRM issues encountered on Windows 11 with 12th Gen Alder Lake CPUs for the majority of games. Right now, there are only three games that are still affected by the issue which is still a huge improvement from the 51 titles that had issues running on Windows 11.

Name of games [remaining] affected in Windows 11* and Windows 10 [with new Intel CPUs]

Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla*
Fernbus Simulator*
Madden 22*

Intel says that the remedy to the issue for these games is the scroll lock fix which can be done so by enabling Legacy Game Compatibility mode from the BIOS of your motherboard. When running the said games, you can press scroll lock to park the E-cores on Intel's Alder Lake Desktop CPUs to get rid of DRM issues.

Microsoft Fixes SSD and HDD Write Speed Bug in Windows 11

According to MSPowerUser, the C drive write speed issues have been a Windows 11 problem for months, with Windows Insiders complaining about the issues well before the operating system's release.

The issue is quite severe, where write speeds on the C drive are cut in half from this bug alone. However, read speeds are unaffected for unknown reasons.

Microsoft has finally addressed the write speed glitch in update KB5007262, but that's not all this update has to offer.

Apparently, there is still a lot that's "broken". But not all PCs have the same issues -- often the problem depends on specific hardware in the individual PC.

Windows 11 vs Windows 10 GPUs Tested: Which Games Faster?

I tested .. graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia, the Radeon RX 6900 XT and GeForce RTX 3080 Ti, and I also retested those cards on Windows 10 using the latest drivers and updates.

Across our 14-game test suite, the overall performance difference between Windows 10 and Windows 11 at three resolutions [1080p, 2K, 4K] was less than one percent.

While these results are boring in general, they're good news because I'd hate to see the new OS penalize or benefit performance.

In a couple games at 4K, there was a 3% or 5% difference -- measurable but not visible. W10 won some and W11 won some. But, on average, by less than 1%.

In other words, "yawn" sleepy

Microsoft Advances its Plan to Kill the Control Panel with Latest Developer Build

Microsoft has been a bit schizophrenic for the past few years when it comes to the Windows Control Panel and the new Settings app. While it has moved a lot of stuff into Settings, the Control Panel still exists as well. This has created a lot of confusion

it is engaged in an “ongoing effort to bring over settings from Control Panel into the Settings app,”

nobody would mind if Microsoft just moved some things to Settings while keeping their functionality, but what it’s been doing is moving and neutering some of them in the pursuit of simplifying things, which is bad for IT pros

Its the "neutering" part that worries me. I use aspects of Control Panel that are not currently in settings. I do not want to lose functions going to W11. W11 is supposed to be "better in every way", not "less".

First Feature Update for Windows 11 (Codenamed Sun Valley 2) Scheduled to Be Finalized in May 2022

Microsoft plans to reach the broad availability status by the summer of the next year.

Unlike Windows 10, Microsoft had confirmed that Windows 11 will only get one feature update every year.

Folks at WindowsCentral write that "the current engineering schedule has mainline development on version 22H2 scheduled for completion in May 2022, with a final build expected sometime in the summer."

If our comments section is any hint, many early adopters of Windows 11 are bugged by how unfinished the new operating system can feel. If you fall into that category of users, the Windows 11 22H2 update will try to finish off the OS with improvements and changes that didn't make it to the final version of Windows 11 in time.

"We expect all eligible devices to be offered the free upgrade to Windows 11 by mid-2022," Microsoft had said.

So, the "Final/Completed" W11 build will be released in the Summer 2022. Until then, expect W11 to have some issues for some users.

Thanks for this update. I'm glad I held off on getting my new Alienware gaming system.

Intel and Windows 11 Deprecating SGX Breaks 4K Blu-ray Playback

Apparently PCs with Intel 12th Gen Core "Alder Lake," and older 11th Gen Core "Rocket Lake" processors, as well as the latest Windows 11 OS, are unable to playback protected 4K Blu-ray video discs, as the DRM component is broken in the absence of Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX).

CyberLink, makers of the PowerDVD software that's bundled as an OEM application with optical drives to play back protected Blu-ray video; put out a statement on its website confirming that they're unable to help with this situation, as they don't control the DRM, the Blu-ray Association does....this only affects playback of Blu-Ray content at 4K—1080p is not affected

Thus, a "complete" PC or HTPC with Blue Ray drives won't work as well with new Intel CPUs and current W11.

FWIW: My computer (listed below) got the W11 update offer yesterday.

Its not a finished product; but, it would probably work okay in my use cases (I do have it installed on one PC in the house). However, I'll wait for the Summer "final version".
