A prequel film to “Master & Commander” has been officially green-lit by 20th Century. I really hope they can get Peter Weir to direct again. I will definitely make the trip to the movie theater to see this.

It was an excellent movie, and I don't say that much.

Now??? Hollywood???

It will probably be Mistress and Commanded, the Lesbian Dominatrix version. ar15 The pink haired soccer person would love the role. exitstageleft

Seriously, I hope they don't mess it up.

Lots of 'Rum, Bum, and Lash' then, upholding the traditions of the royal Navy!

I'd watch that smile Not that it would make for a great prequel for M&C mind you smile

"Get woke, go broke" should be shouted over and over at this writer and director, but I an guessing it will go that route if a hollywood boardroom has anything to say about... I mean they think it will be the only way to get people under 50 to go see a historical drama. I recently saw a trailer for a movie about the Bush War in SA... then I saw it turned into a gay love story. Ugh.... why, was it based on a book? Maybe I can download it and edit that out ffs. I see a lot of good looking shows on Netlfix but then I see they are teen dramas or have a "modern spin" applied. Yawn. Nope.

Fingers crossed they don't mess it up, I'm pessimistic about it though.

I guess you can say I'm guardedly optimistic. Being a prequel does stink though since obviously we won't have Russell Crowe and Paul Bettany again. It's been 18 years since M&C so I don't think any kind of CGI de-aging process will help. biggrin

I know many like myself, would like to see this done without all the woke stuff. How refreshing it would be if there was actual attempts to show that those ships actually probably did have a wide variety of different kinds of peoples from all over the place sailing on them. Real people with real good and bad parts to their souls. I'm sure will get the typical Mary Sue and and all the other cliché' nonsense though.

You're joking, right? They aren't... Can't be...

Shouldn't be.

^ I googled it. He isn't joking.

I look forward to a Chinese or Native American Hitler one day.

For the M&C prequel... really will also depend on who they pick for the main roles. Russel made it really well, and will be hard to beat.

Well, Mel Brooks already did the Jewish Hitler...

But that was a farcical comedy, not a historical drama.

Potentially great news!

I hope, oh how I hope, that they will stay true to the books and the spirit of the first movie. No love interests, just men on a ship chasing another, and it was precisely that fact that made the first movie so good. I do however have my doubts. Russell Crowe was at his best around that time, and will be hard to top as Jack Aubrey. I wonder who would do as good a job today. Any suggestions?

It’s been a year or so since I finished the books for the 6th time. Probably time to start the series again. For those of you here who like it, here is one of my favourite passages in all of the books. The events leading up to it, the enormous injustice of the situation, and the reaction of all the seamen make this such a standout part of the story. If you know, you know:

“Jack was led out of the dark room into the strong light, and as they guided him up the steps he could see nothing for the glare. 'Your head here sir, if you please,' said the sheriff's man in a low, nervous, conciliating voice, 'and your hands just here.'

The man was slowly fumbling with the bolt, hinge and staple, and as Jack stood there with his hands in the lower half-rounds, his sight cleared: he saw that the broad street was filled with silent, attentive men, some in long togs, some in shore-going rig, some in plain frocks, but all perfectly recognizable as seamen. And officers, by the dozen, by the score: midshipmen and officers. Babbington was there, immediately in front of the pillory, facing him with his hat off, and Pullings, Stephen of course, Mowett, Dundas . . . He nodded to them, with almost no change in his iron expression, and his eye moved on: Parker, Rowan, Williamson, Hervey . . . and men from long, long ago, men he could scarcely name, lieutenants and commanders putting their promotion at risk, midshipmen and master's mates their commissions, warrant-officers their advancement.

'The head a trifle forward, if you please, sir,' murmured the sheriff's man, and the upper half of the wooden frame came down, imprisoning his defenceless face. He heard the click of the bolt and then in the dead silence a strong voice cry 'Off hats'. With one movement hundreds of broad-brimmed tarpaulin-covered hats flew off and the cheering began, the fierce full-throated cheering he had so often heard in battle.”

In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than a hundred sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship!

This is truly absurd to the extreme. It’s bad enough that fictional characters have been “reimagined” as a different race or sex but now historical figures?? Ugh.

They could still do a sequel and not digitally deage the actors, they'd just have to skip a few many books ahead. It's not like they really based the movie off one book anyway. After all this time it would be more of a question if any of the cast was still willing or able...and if they aren't press gang 'em.

I’m now anxiously awaiting the next US Civil War min-series from Netflix. Samuel Jackson will be portraying Abraham Lincoln and Emma Stone will be portraying Harriet Tubman.
