Rumor/Leak regarding near future changes in AMD CPUs.

Quote
AMD next-gen AM5 platform to feature LGA1718 socket

AMD AM5, the successor to AM4 is to feature an LGA1718 socket. AMD is apparently changing its socket type from PGA to LGA (land grid array), which means there be no pins on the next-gen AMD processors, instead, pins will be located on the motherboard socket.

The leaker confirmed the platform will support dual-channel DDR5 memory, but surprisingly, PCI Express Gen5 support is to be exclusive to Zen4 Genoa (EPYC) processors [for servers -- desktop remain DDR4 for now, it is rumored].

It is rumored that the first consumer Zen4 and AM5 products are to be codenamed, Raphael. Previous rumors have suggested that we might see Raphael launch in 2022.

From what I read (and my amateur memory speed experiments), currently, DDR4 is all one needs for a desktop PC with an AMD CPU. DDR5 will be more expensive and probably not increase performance noticeably -- so, sticking with DDR4 for desktop PC CPUs makes sense. We'll see what actually happens in a year or two.

Best CPUs for Gaming: May 2021

In general, AMD stays in the lead. But, Intel performance is okay -- power is generally high though.

The article seems to continue to find the R5 5600X as the best performance/price of gaming CPUs. Now, the R7 5800X and R5 5600X sell at MSRP or lower (if one looks around). My R5 5600X performs nearly equal to my R7 5800X (can't see the slight difference -- only measure it).

Attached figure lists the AMD and Intel CPUs to consider at each price point.

Rumor/Leak: Intel making a fundamental change to Intel 10nm CPU size and mounting.

Quote
Intel's LGA1700 CPUs Will Need New Coolers, or at Least New Mounts

Intel's transition to LGA1700 will not only mark Intel's changeover to a new socket for mainstream PCs (something the company does rather often), but also to all-new dimensions of its CPU socket, something that has not happened for over 15 years. The new dimensions will entail new mounting mechanisms, which essentially means new coolers, or at least coolers with new mounts.

Intel's LGA1700 will retain the 37.5mm width, but will increase its length to 45mm. Furthermore, it will decrease its Z-height from 7.5 mm to 6.5 mm, .. The new dimensions will entail a new CPU mounting mechanism with a new cooler hole pattern.

Intel's upcoming Alder Lake processors for desktops will be made using the company's 10 nm Enhanced SuperFin process technology, with high-performance power-hungry CPUs in mind

So, new MB will be needed (normal for Intel CPUs).

AMD does not change required MBs or mounts as often -- usually just plug the latest CPU into your old MB (need BIOS update -- MB manufacturers do not always provide an update). However, the next generation AMD CPUs will need a new MB (noted above).

Maybe not, but was reading this just today:

Agreed. Thanks for linking the article for folks who want to read more details. Your article describes the change better than the one I read.

At a minimum, pundits were expecting a new AMD motherboard would be required for the next generation AMD CPU.

The new socket on the new AMD motherboard is probably an improvement according to your linked article.

A slightly updated AMD CPU roadmap. Notably, the next desktop PC CPU will not be an improved 7nm -- rather they will move to 5nm.

The new 5nm is rumored/leaked to have the new pinless CPU -- and, thus, require new motherboards. I.e. the new CPUs will not be compatible with current motherboards -- no simple change BIOS, plug, and play for upgraders.

Rumors/leaks say DDR5 memory for EPYC CPUs used in huge Data Center Servers.

Different rumors/leaks seem to disagree on the memory for the new home-use desktop PCs. Some say DDR5 (expensive), some say they'll stick with DDR4 (for now).

We'll see on the memory -- these are "rumors/leaks".

AMD Zen 5 Powered Next-Gen EPYC ‘Turin’, Ryzen 8000 ‘Granite Ridge’ & Ryzen 8000 ‘Strix Point’ CPUs To Be Produced on TSMC’s 3nm Process Node

The 3nm AMD Zen 5 architecture will be replacing the 5nm Zen 4 architecture that is expected to launch next year with EPYC Genoa and Ryzen 7000 'Raphael' CPUs.

While Zen 4 is aiming to launch in 2022, the Zen 5 architecture is slated for a 2023-2024 launch. It looks like the transition to Zen 5 from Zen 4 would be faster than the transition from Zen 3 to Zen 4.

So, by 2024 we'll have 3nm CPUs and, probably, GPUs.

3nm does not mean the chip is literally physically 3nm throughout. Rather, its a shorthand way of advertising improved performance. Still, part of the chip will be 3nm.

We may be getting close to the end of actual-size shrinkage. However, the name might change to a smaller dimension (e.g. 1.5nm) to indicate faster performance.

Long ago, I thought roughly 3nm would be the actual-size limit. It doesn't seem like significantly under 1nm actual-size is feasible, to me. I don't mind being wrong smile

The answer to Nvidia DLSS. AMD FSR works on majority of games and on most GPUs.

EDIT: It still must be enabled at the Game Developer level. That was not clear in the article I read.

Quote
AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) launches June 22nd, supported by Radeon and GeForce GPUs

The FSR will officially be supported by all Radeon RX graphics cards, including RX Vega, RX 500, RX 5000 and RX 6000 series... and on competitors’ products.

According to AMD, FidelityFX Super Resolution is a spatial upscaling technique, which generates a “super resolution” image from every input frame. In other words, it does not rely on history buffers or motion vectors. Neither does it require any per-game training.

Super Resolution
Major framerate boosts combined with high-quality, high-resolution graphics!
Four different quality modes proposed: Performance, Balanced, Quality, and Ultra Quality.

Cross-platform
FSR is not limited to the latest GPU architectures only! It runs on a large variety of GPUs.
Wide API support for DirectX®12, Vulkan®, and DirectX®11!
Once released, FSR can be ported onto multiple platforms without restriction.

Open source
In due course, FSR 1.0 will be provided .. on GPUOpen under the MIT license.

Quote
Edit: The one thing that's maybe a little less exciting about the FSR announcement is the fact that it's still something that needs to be enabled at a developer level, and so far AMD is only saying that 'over 10 game studios and engines' are going to enable FSR support in 2021

Intel may "buy in" to AMD open FSR (described above) -- for Intel GPUs.

Quote
Intel might use AMD’s FSR with their upcoming Xe-HPG series

At Computex, AMD made big news by announcing its own alternative to NVIDIA DLSS, a resolution upscaling algorithm.

AMD FSR will be available not just to the latest GPUs but also to the processors based on older architectures, such as AMD’s Polaris or NVIDIA Pascal. Being a cross-platform technology supported by DirectX12, DirectX11, and Vulkan APIs, it will also work on Intel GPUs.

On Twitter, in a response to Kyle Bennett, Raja Koduri confirmed that Intel is already looking into giving FSR a try on the upcoming Xe-HPG based GPUs. Those are the next-generation DG2 discrete gaming GPUs, Koduri says that Intel will try to align with open approaches,

Nvidia often makes its new technology "Nvidia Only" to get folks to buy Nvidia. AMD has always stressed "open" techniques. Intel may be going the same route.

Over time, FSR might supplant DLSS as the "go to" sharpening technique. If so, good -- more folks can use it -- and its easier for Developers to install in new games (so they imply). We'll see.

AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution also coming to Radeon RX 480 and RX 470

I just wanted to pass on the news that we are updating the list of compatible AMD graphics for FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) to include Radeon RX 470 and RX 480.

Looking forward to having you all try FSR out on the 22nd. ✌️

Some folks are "sure" that FSR won't be as good as DLSS 2 (running on recent RTX 3000 series cards).

Probably not. But, will it be "good enough" -- and be an improvement when running on most of the non-RTX3000 series cards (old and new) out there? We'll see.

Market share data shows AMD selling very slightly more GPUs than Nvidia. Intel wins due to having a GPU integrated inside most desktop/laptop Intel CPUs.

Quote
GPU Market Grew 38.74% In Q1 2021 With A Total of 119 Million Units Shipped, NVIDIA & AMD Retain Graphics Share

it is stated that while integrated GPUs dominate the GPU market, discrete graphics units are expected to reach a market share of 26% over the next five years.

As for the overall market share, AMD saw a drop of -0.12% versus the previous quarter, Intel saw a drop of -0.5% versus the previous quarter while NVIDIA's share increased by 0.62% versus the last quarter. In the discrete graphics segment, AMD saw a share gain of +1.0% while NVIDIA saw a share drop of -1.0%. So the share levels in the dGPU segment are pretty much the same.

AMD’s Steam CPU Share Skyrockets Over 12 Months

The Steam numbers for AMD are good on their own, but they’re downright fabulous compared with where the smaller CPU company was sitting a year ago. In June of 2020 (reflecting May results), AMD had 22.45 percent of the market. Today, it’s just over 30 percent.

Elon Musk demos Cyberpunk 2077 on Tesla’s new infotainment system powered by AMD Navi 23 GPU

Elon Musk says Tesla’s new infotainment system is now as powerful as PlayStation 5

The central console has a large 17-inch display with 2200×1300 resolution. But the central processing unit feeds data and images to another two screens. Tesla has made improvements in system UI, display quality, or even to the car audio system, which is powered by Tesla’s own codec. The biggest change, however, has come to the GPU capabilities of the new infotainment system.

Elon has delivered on his promise that the new infotainment system can play Cyberpunk. In fact, this was shown at the event during a live demo. Elon said that the system delivers high framerates in modern games

Tesla Model S Plaid costs 122,990 USD.

Just information regarding support for old GPUs. Support has to end sometime.

NVIDIA GeForce 600/700 Game Ready driver support ends on August 31

NVIDIA R470 branch drivers will be the last to support Kepler architecture.

NVIDIA has today confirmed it will no longer support Kepler-based GeForce graphics cards and Windows 7/8/8.1 operating system starting August 31. On this day the last R470 driver will be released supporting these GPUs and OSes. This does not mean that Kepler GPUs will no longer receive patches for critical bugs and security updates, but there will be no more Game Ready drivers for these graphics cards.

NVIDIA introduces the GeForce GTX 600 series back in 2012, which was then followed by GeForce GTX 700 series

Attachment is list of affected GPUs.

About the Future of AMD's hardware architectures. A slight change in direction for the CPU industry and AMD CPUs.

AMD patents a task transition method between BIG and LITTLE processors

AMD “big.LITTLE” aha heterogeneous computing in Ryzen 8000 series

The next decade will no longer be dictated by the number of cores, but rather the processor’s fabrication node, packaging method, and power efficiency. A big role will also be played by heterogeneous architectures [i.e different types of cores (e.g. high power, low power, special purpose) in the same CPU package].

The next-generation Windows operating system is rumored to feature a new task scheduling method for such heterogeneous computing, which might just align with Intel’s Alder Lake launch.

[AMD's] patent covers the most important engineering problem of heterogeneous computing, which is how to schedule or transition tasks between different types of cores.

it is believed that Ryzen 8000 series “Strix Point” will be AMD’s first to implement heterogeneous architecture with 3nm Zen5 cores combined with Zen4D on a single package. ... by the time AMD’s heterogeneous CPUs/APUs are available, Intel will already have its Alder Lake architecture on the market.

A very long article about 8 core CPUs. AMD wins on things gamers care about. And, AMD wins overall.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X vs Intel Core i7-11700K: The Eight-Core Faceoff

The AMD Ryzen 7 5800X vs Intel Core i7-11700K battle boils down to a four-to-five victory in favor of the Ryzen 7 5800X [see attachment].

if you're looking for a gaming-only rig, the Ryzen 5 5600X is the hands-down best chip (if you can find it near recommended pricing). Additionally, for the productivity-minded, the Ryzen 9 5900X offers a superior price-to-performance ratio over competing chips (including the Ryzen 7 5800X).

As the article notes, depending on what you do with your PC, the R5 5600X or R9 5900X may truly be the CPUs to buy.

Intel CPUs are not bad. But, these days AMD CPUs continue to beat them by a small amount.

Rumor/Leak regarding future commercial level AMD CPUs:

Quote
AMD Rumored To Offer Up To 128 Zen 4 Cores & 12-Channel DDR5-5200 Memory Support In Next-Gen EPYC & Threadripper CPUs

A new rumor has just popped up on Chiphell according to which AMD's next-gen Threadripper and EPYC CPUs could pack up to 128 cores based on the Zen 4 architecture.

So far, we know that AMD is working on its EPYC Genoa lineup of server processors which will be offering up to 96 cores and 192 threads.

There were multiple rumors that pointed that AMD's next-gen EPYC Genoa lineup would feature a maximum of 128 cores instead of 96 as previously reported.

This is all just a rumor but it's definitely going to be one of the fastest CPUs on the market once it launches with a core count that might remain unchallenged for years to come.
