Mid Air Collision. It sounds so...clinical. When I was a boy, I never would have dreamed such a thing were possible. How would there ever be two aircraft in the sky at the same time? In the same place? Unfortunately, in this war it has been all too common. Mid Air Collision. Mid-Air? It hardly leads one to envision the fall after. The burning thick greasy smoke, the bits of wood and fabric that linger long after the plummeting mass of flesh and metal. We went up on a scramble the other day; two sets of enemy bombers over our airfield. We caught one brace before the lines and set into them. My recent injury in mind, I dove away before their return fire could hit me and young Bishop finished him off. I thought Lt. Edmund had done the same with the other, but then I saw to my horror that he had strayed too close and the two craft momentarily became one fiery mass before separating to each find their way Earthward. I had the remains of all fliers retrieved and we gave them our full attention at the internment this morning. I have already sent off the letter to Edmund's parents. Will this bloody April never end?!?

Hi,
I ve start watching your Stream. Great flying! Keep it Up!

Thought I'd try my hand at this....reporting malarkey

Vizeflugmeister Albert Tross
Marine-Landfliegerabteilung III
3rd September 1915

You can imagine my joy having finally been assigned my own Fokker Eindecker a few days ago. As an experienced pre-war pilot I was disappointed not to get one earlier. However, my badgering of the station officer, Herr Kerndorf finally paid off when three 80hp Eindeckers turned up last week.

I've been flying it as much as possible ever since, with strict instructions to stay on our side of the lines, lest the new synchronisation device falls into enemy hands.

On my first few jaunts I found nothing but empty skies, or at least I saw nothing, for on my return from one such flight the station commander reported a nearby camp had been heavily bombed. I resolved to open my eyes and the station commander ordered we fly as a flight of three.

On our next flight, about 40 minutes in and about 6000 feet up I spotted flak bursts near the coast. I moved my flight to investigate and found a single enemy aircraft considerably higher than us. On seeing us he turned and ran. With his nose down we had no chance of catching him before he crossed the lines. So we had to console ourselves with a moral victory.

The next day, dawn broke beautifully, we were scheduled to fly that afternoon, however a few moments later the alarm bell was sounding and we could hear flak guns being fired. The adjutant ran in to our hut to tell us enemy aircraft were approaching our airfield, and we were to get airborne as quickly as possible.

I was kitted and out within moments and found my aircraft ready. A few moments later and I was airborne and climbing away as the first bombs were whistling down onto our field.

I climbed as quickly as I could but it's a slow business and it seemed an age before I could start off after the BE types who had already started on their homeward journey. I could see the puffs of smoke from the flak bursts marking their route for me.

Bit by bit I gained on them. Meter by meter I was nearer making them pay for their audacity, but could I get them before we got to the lines? I could see the front approaching, like an open wound across the land.

I was gaining all the time. Yes, I had them. I was sweating now and trying to control my breathing. I could smell the fumes from them now, sweeter than a pretty girl's handkerchief, as I came in behind and beneath the rearmost BE type.

The moment had come....tac tac tac tac tac tac went my machine gun, as I aimed at the cockpit and engine area. I definitely scored hits. The enemy flew on and then tried to evade. I came around for another pass and heard his machine gun rattle. Again I aimed.......tac tac tac I fired....this time his engine spluttered....tac tac tac....his nose went down and down. I watched, was he pretending? No, No he's done for. I watched as he went straight down into the dark depths below.

I looked for the other BE but he was well over the lines now so I left him and headed back towards my kameraden and then back to our airfield which thankfully had not been too badly damaged.

The commander was about to ask how I'd got on as I disembarked, but the response of my two kameraden who ran over to congratulate me as I climbed down said all he needed to know it seems.

All he said was to report to his office once I had cleaned up.

Wings and fuselage could be—and often were—pierced in 50 places, missing the occupants by inches (blissfully unaware of how close it had come until they returned to base). Then the sailmaker would carefully cover each hole with a square inch of Irish linen frayed at the edges and with a brushful of dope make our aircraft 'serviceable' again within an hour."

1 confirmed kill
9th September 1915

"Ahh Tross"..."Good News....the Flak battery down the road are happy to confirm your victory, they have asked though, in future, could you try to ensure the #%&*$# thing doesn't land on their heads haha" said Ltn Kerndorf.

That evening was a joyous one, but it was back to business the next morning with a quiet jaunt over towards Oostende. A similar pattern followed for a few days. The nearest we got to action was scoring another moral victory over a Morane above the lines near Diksmuide but again he cut and run and again it was his 80hp engine against mine. 'Orders' Tross, 'Orders' I thought to myself as we turned and left him to run.

The next day I was due to fly a patrol at 4pm. At around 3pm we could hear flak batteries opening up a few miles away. Our watch tower then reported incoming aircraft. I threw my gear on as the mechanics readied my aircraft, which thankfully, due to my impending flight was already fuelled and armed. A few moments later I was airborne. It was quite cloudy but the sun was coming through the clouds. I could see the enemy aircraft high above and as I gained height I heard the thud as their bombs hit our airfield.

I continued climbing after the enemy and could make out they were both BE types. I continued climbing and circling underneath them.

I could now see they'd started for home so I went after them climbing àll the time. This time I knew what I was doing, I came up behind and beneath the lead aircraft, I don't think he even saw me coming, he certainly made no attempt to evade anyway.

I was so close now......NOW tac tac tac tac tac tac went my gun. Straight away his machine shuddered and smoked, I had to dip my nose underneath him as he slowed and came around I then heard a loud bang. I looked around and the BE was nose down and covered in flames, smoke bellowing behind him. He was done for!

I looked around but couldn't see the other BE type, most probably he'd headed into clouds. At any rate I saw no trace.

I took my bearings, our side of the lines, due west of Oostende and made my way home. This time I was quite calm as I landed, although my blackened face as I dismounted told my kameraden all they needed to know it seems. This time Ltn Kerndorf asked for full details, although he allowed me to freshen up first, thankfully.

The airfield had taken a pounding but repairs were underway, at least none of the aircraft or personnel were hit.

The armourers report showed I'd only fired 20 rounds as I completed my report and handed it to Ltn Kerndorf. "Two claims in a week Tross" are you trying to win this war on your own?" He joked as he countersigned it and placed it on his desk. "I'll let you know when I have news, now go and relax with the others man, you deserve it" said Kerndorf. "Yes Herr Ltn" said I as I left, closing the door.

Thanks guys, well I've decided to listen to the advice and 'go the whole hog' as they say and start a proper DID campaign over on that thread. I'll be launching it later today.

I'll keep this one though, in case I crash and burn early winkngrin

Thanks, LtCasey! I'm on a bit of a WOFF hiatus at the moment, but there will be more (probably a lot more!) when the new version drops!

Great work, Albert! Nice to see this thread getting some love too!

April 20th and 21st 1916

Harold "Buckeye" Willis
ESC. Lafayette
Luxeuil

We arrived at Luxeuil finally, in the middle of nowhere. So quiet here, you can't even hear the artillery guns firing in the frontline. Two weeks ago there wasn't even an aerodrome, Just this old house. French Army did a great job getting us out of the way.
Our CO, Capitaine Thenault, put up some flight training in our Niueport 10s which are really nimble, but also slow.

Yesterday we had our Maiden flight as a unit, which put us over the frontline on patrol covered by "A-flight".
It was a roundtrip of 88nm in wonderful weather, practicing formation flying. After 88 Minuten we were home again. We saw no action.

Today the same, same routine, same sector, same flights.Beautiful spring weather.
Flight A went ahead, we followed. But they were to fast this time, and far ahead, when the E3s attacked!
We wittnessed this furball from around 3 nm away, with no chance to help. By the time we arrived, we saw a single E3 buzzing east.

Captain Thenault signaled to stay in formation and dont cross the frontlines.

Flight A was gone. 3 men and aircrafts obliterated within 5 minutes.

We countinued our patrol in thight formation frequently checking the sky in the east. Nothing happened.

In the evening we had word from the hospital that our comrades were still alive but severely wounded.
With great relief we raised our glasses and praised their survival. Today showed us, we are not combat ready yet.

With the new Iteration of WOFF we'll see the reincarnation of Harold Buckeye Willis, DID in the year 1916 with ESC.Lafayette.
He just claimed his first balloon kill over the Alsace front.

I just completed my second recon mission today in company with my wingmen in B Flight 16 Sqn RFC. It was a log of fun until one of the chaps crashed on landing! The briefing said he was destroyed by enemy action! Not sure how that was but they will be missed.

THE ADVENTURES OF ALBRECHT "AL" KASELTZER, EPISODE 1: "PILOT"

11 November, 1915
Bertincourt, France

[Linked Image]

Today was Leutnant Kaseltzer's first day at the airfield in Bertincourt following a brief training regimen.

Training, of course, was just an administrative matter, for Kaseltzer was quite experienced as a pilot - at the age of 19, he'd spent his meager savings learning how to fly, and had worked in civil aviation for some time before serving as a trainer for Die Fliegertruppe in 1910. Bureaucracy, Al thought to himself: where every step you take requires a new form stating that if you die taking said step, it's totally not the paper-pusher's fault!

The two-week course wasn't totally a waste, however. Kaseltzer was just not a very detail-oriented man, and was skating over the fact that most of his experience was in single-seaters - much like the infamous Morane-Saulniers servicing the other side now. Die Fliegertruppe wanted Kaseltzer to pilot a two-seater reconnaissance craft, a task that was much newer and more challenging than Al himself was willing to admit.

Regardless, here was Leutnant Kaseltzer, newly stationed with FFA 32. Wasting no time, the commanding officer assigned Kaseltzer to carry out an artillery-spotting mission. He'd be flying an ungainly Aviatik two-seater, with Hauptmann Wolfgang Graf serving as observer; another Hauptmann, Hugo Ludwig, assumed escort duties in a Fokker Eindecker.

[Linked Image]

Coincidentally, given the way Al was hitting the air flying, these three men were the only people he knew at all in his new squadron: Graf, Ludwig, and the commanding officer.

Take-off was uneventful as the three-man flight advanced towards No Mans' Land. The front was caught under a thick overcast sky today, though, and Albrecht found it difficult to continue tracking Ludwig's Fokker E.III through the clouds.

[Linked Image]

With some navigation assistance from Graf in the observer's seat, Kaseltzer found his way to the target sector. Despite the absence of Ludwig & his Eindecker, Kaseltzer didn't see any Entente fighters on the horizon to interrupt their mission. Ludwig must have just gotten off course in the clouds and turned back home, Kaseltzer thought to himself, as he prepared to turn back the same way.

When Kaseltzer landed the Aviatik two-seater back at Bertincourt, however, he noticed Ludwig's Eindecker was conspicuously missing.

An hour later, the news reached FFA 32: enemy Nieuport fighters caught Ludwig from behind, and a lengthy battle ensued. Ludwig managed to get in some good shots, but it was all for nothing: the craft was destroyed, and the man was dead.

Yikes! A rough start! I have to admit that after nearly three decades of WWI flight sim interest, I still can't tell the difference between the German recon craft, barring the Roland...

Rick, surely you can recognize a Hannover too? Aren't you glad we don't have any two-seat Albatroses?
Baxter, you shouldn't worry about it until it's your crate crashing due to enemy action. winkngrin
