I had to buy a new SSD just to have enough space to download and install, and it is neat! I'm a bit bummed we can't go on most atmospheric worlds, but there are some in every system that we can. I figure this is a start in making the rest possible to visit later in the expansion.

Oh, I also climbed on top of an AI adder visiting a ground port and then the crafty pilot inside decided to take off...

Use your imagination what happened next. smile

I installed it last night but have not played it yet. I'll try out the new features when I get back to the bubble. I'm still about 40k LY away.

Installed and played the foot tutorial last night.
Today while working in home office I made some APEX trips to trigger one of the new engineer invites. At the various destinations I visited the shops and bought the suits and some weapons & equipment.

So the neatest moment I had last night was when I fired my Krait's two lasers into the snow pack of a frozen world and left a several kilometer long trail in the powder. Yes, yes, this sounds quite ho-hum, but then I landed and took a stroll down the lasered trail...

I quickly came to realize that my two thermal vented lasers are about the width of your average neighborhood street apart, each being on an opposing sidewalk. The Krait is that big. =) Even those tightly placed hardpoints aren't so much.

Haha what a neat anecdote. I said that this would bring scale in to focus and your story is proof smile

I haven't kept up with Odyssey, so forgive my ignorance! LOL

SO is this not an expansion of ED:Horizons? It's a separate purchase?

Please forgive me! neaner

It's a separate purchase, and not a cheap one either. £29.99/$42.53.

Are there any new ships?

The thing is, this expansion doesn't really have much in it for me. I'm not too interested in the shooter stuff in Elite. I'll need to try it before knowing for certain, but that's not what I want out of Elite frankly.

The first footfall thing has appeal. I like the idea of stitching my commander name across the galaxy of course, it's the thing that first drew me to the game.

I think I'd enjoy hanging out in the station and watching the ships come and go from the docking bay, but that has diminishing returns.

I'll buy it sooner or later, whenever I get the itch to play again. I'm happy to support Frontier, and the price is reasonable in my view.

So what do you blokes reckon are the finest points, having played it?

Thanks Chucky! Heck, I got ED with Horizons for $25, I'll forgo this!

Cheers

It wouldn't be so bad if you could have picked up E:D at its current price on Steam of £4.99/$7.06.

DBond,I agree with you,I just don't want a FPS tacked on to my E:D experience.

I'm interested, but have not bought yet. My GPU is an older one (GTX 950), and I'm not sure yet what I can expect at 1920x1080 on mid/low settings.

To me, being able to exit my ship is essential for immersion. Star Citizen may never come out, but Elite has, so I figure if I continue to support them, the game can only improve further.

I’ll get it for two reasons. To be able to instance with other people who have it and to support FDev. FPS has minimal appeal for me. Haven’t pulled the trigger yet, waitin to hear how many bugs it introduced into the game.

I have by virtue of having the lifetime pass from beta, but I haven't done much with it. I tried the alph/beta test that was out a couple of months ago and that was it. I'm not much of a FPS fan, and like DB I'm looking for something else from Elite.

I did run across this video on the new planet creation tech, which is disappointing. I hope it's a work in progress and planets will have more of the features we've seen in the past.

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.
This is known as "bad luck.”

I'm personally holding off judgement on the planetary stuff. Players are experiencing heavily conflicting results with it. There are frequently good planetary shots posted by some players, stuff like on this page:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/the-great-big-odyssey-screenshots-thread.568114/page-100

And I've watched live streams of Odyssey players, which show good looking planets. Even streams by players I know, who are doing what we ask in the chat. The stream players probably aren't editing/faking it real time, unless there are ways to do this I'm not aware of.

I'll have to wait and see what the next few patches bring.

I'm similar to Bo, I'll want to instance with fellow players, looking forward to the atmospheric conditions & beautiful vistas. Not interested in FPS (I've got ARMA for that). Concerned it'll continue it's fubared mess way to long and it'll contaminate Horizons when they attempt to merge. Thus I'll be waiting for the storm to calm down & patches applied.

First footfall on four moons today. Woooooo!

The planetary surface rendering has changed dramatically, though... Take this moon in early Horizons:

And in Odyssey:
