Just a heads up:
I noticed a link from the Strike fighters page about the 3d converter and looked it up.

This page is the official homepage for 3D Object Converter, a powerful 3D polygon model translation and interactive viewing shareware tool that allows arbitrary 3D model data to be imported from external sources, exported to various industry standard 3D file formats with great accuracy and quality. The program supports 822 file formats. It is available for Windows95/98/Me/NT/2K/XP x86|x64/Vista x86|x64/Windows 7 x86|x64/Windows 8.x x86|x64/Windows 10 x86|x64 and Windows Server 2003/2008/2008 R2/2012/2012 R2 x64/2016 x64/2019 x64.

Its also is available for OS X / macOS and Linux.

Supported file formats (v8.004)
L=Load, S=Save, MTFS=Manually Texture File Selection
...
MicroProse (European Air War; Fleet Defender Gold; Gunship!)
...

Apparently it can load the 3dz according to the chart.
Not sure what else.
just a FYI its a shareware product limited version also you can buy it

What is registration ?

3D Object Converter is shareware and you must register the program to continue using it after the 30-day trial period.

Once registered, you remain a registered user for this and all future versions of 3D Object Converter.

There is a functional difference between the evaluation and the registered (licensed) version of 3D Object Converter.

In case of using the following modules, the exported 3D file will have every 5th polygon or triangle removed.

Here is what you get with your registration:

1. A serial number (by e-mail) to enable all functions.
2. Lifetime license ! Never pay again for any new versions !
3. Life of product technical support.

Finally, every registration enables us to improve our software and continue developing high quality products in the future.
Discount on multiple (volume) licenses, a degressive rate is applied when you purchase several licenses (for the same name).
Number of licenses

Unit prices
1 license

Unit price: 50 USD or 45 EUR
2 to 4 licenses : 30% discount

Unit price: 35 USD or 32 EUR

I think this converter is based on the notes of a Gunship! modder and EAW modder. I came across it a while ago.
I also think the modder was no longer maintaining his site.

Or I can be mistaken thinking of another tool from a different author of the Gunship! GBZ format I think it was....

According to this post in Armor Simulations - General

@FsFOOT, thank you for the tips.
3dz format is finally now available in 3DObject Converter. It can be examined and reskinned perhaps a little easier. It can be converted to other formats but not back to 3dz (or 3db for that matter). Still, it could be done as long as there was any interest.

The 3DObject Converter can open at least the 3dz.

I downloaded the various versions from the site, the links work.
However I am on Linux and the portable version for that links to http://www.i3dconverter.com/

Off memory I think thats the one..Im not sure if any new 3D programs can play with EAW models..

Inspiration to make this conversion happen in 3D Object Converter was from this document by Gurney :

Quote
Gunship - Format of 3DB Files
These model files are very similar to EAW's 3DZ models, which are also used in Gunship.
The main differences are:
 The models can contain up to 65535 elements and 65535 points, instead of the 256 allowed by 3DZ's.
 All x,y,z coordinates are expressed as floating point values (and therefore take up 4 bytes instead of 2).
 Texture mapping coordinates are also floating point values, ranging from 0 to 1. In terms of the textures, coordinate (1,1) corresponds to the bottom right, and (0,0) to the top left. To get the actual pixel coordinate, simply multiply by the size of the texture (normally 256).
 All surface normals are normalised to 1 (using floating point values) instead of 16384 as in the 3DZs.
 The 3DB format also includes "True Vertex Normals", which I don't know the use of - perhaps someone who is familiar with Gunship could fill in this blank?
Please see Paulo Morais’ original notes on the 3DZ structure for more detailed information about each section.
Gurney, 19/10/2003

So here is where the credit belongs to and I think Gurney is referred to as the modder whose site is no longer available?

It is a true regretful situation that many great inquisitive and truly brilliant moders were involved in maintaining interest and knowledge about the wonders of old MPS games and simulations. I am afraid that era is no longer upon us and all those beautiful things of programming and game designing will be soon forgotten if not totally lost to all future generations of gamers.

I think Strike Fighters used 3DZ models as well.Unless someone breaks the code and can change the callouts to something more modern in 3D or someone implements a importer exporter into a popular software program like Blender or Fusion360.

Does the conversion to 3dz provide a working rendering sequence?

There is no "conversion to 3dz as would mean the ability to write and save in 3dz format. There is only a load or read module available allowing reviewing models and textures and possibly modifying textures without change to existing UW coordinates. That does not mean that saving could not be available if the subject is pushed forward with the developer of 3D ObjectConverter.
