NotRelevant - Dean’s got his legs under himself now from the looks of it, and nearing that coveted “ace” status as well. Trading man for man and plane for plane with the Hun is a harsh reality, but if such trades end in favour of the Crown Britain will prevail.

Fullofit - Smirnov is on the board with his first confirmed victory, eh? That initial one was a tough one to get, but I’ve a hunch they will start coming easier and faster for him now. And that was some excellent timing on that aerodrome attack.

Albert - Congratulations on Jacob’s latest award! As Saschenberg said, it is well deserved, as is the prestige it brings. If your man continues on as he has been he should be sporting the “Blue Max” in the not-too-distant future as well.

Carrick - Poor Dubra, another fine young fellow gone to fly with the angels, or in his case more likely fashion new and exciting undergarments for them.

Trooper and Buckeye and Robert - There’s hot tea on the stove and fresh scones on the table so stay and have a cuppa’ and a nibble. If you need your tea strengthened you all know where the liquor is.

Raine - Nice to see Mac back in the thick of it, though perhaps a tad too thick in that go-round with the Fokkers. He did well to extricate himself from that one. His skills are likely somewhat rusty after his time away, but I’ve every confidence he’ll be back to his old Hun-dropping self in short order.

Trustworthykebab - Don’t leave us hanging too long, we want to know if Feldwebel Schutzmeier got that pending claim of his confirmed.

Epower - So that’s how Freddy missed seeing his pal Ripper. Your man was sent to Rouen by mistake! Typical military cock-up. Ah well, as long as he’s getting well cared for regardless of where he ended up. But what a disappointment for him to be completely out of it for Eliza’s visit. Fate can be quite cruel when it chooses to be.

MFair - Any landing you can walk away from, eh? Glad to learn Kemp made it down in one piece, even if his plane didn’t. But what of Beckman?

Brilliant reports and screenshots and videos everyone, a most enjoyable catch-up! As for Freddy, he is currently toddling about London in his AC roadster, quite enjoying what the city has to offer. He still has not received word on where he is to report when his leave is up, but he’ll be stopping by RAF HQ for that information soon enough.

MFair – Kemp did well to down SE with only three rounds. He did even better to survive that crash.
Fullofit – Moving from a Fokker triplane to a Spad has to be jarring. I can’t think of two more different aeroplanes. Congratulations on the HHO. Of course, you know what comes next…
Carrick – Jules was doing very well. Let me know what nationality you want for your next man.
EPower – another brilliant episode from the hospital. As Saint Jude is the patron saint of hopeless causes, there is hope for Oliver and Eliza yet!
Kebab – quite understand you being taken up by real life. Don’t forget we do this for fun.
NR – congratulations on the last two kills. Cunningham is doing well. Who knows, maybe one day he will be as great as Lehman in the eyes of the captain.

"I banked about and found the Hun again, just off my right side."

I always dislike escort patrols, especially when we are taking care of the poor chaps flying RE8s. For one, we must keep station with their horribly slow grids and are forever dancing between stalling and getting out in front of the two-seaters. For another, we must maintain roughly the same altitude as our wards. Today they are at 9000 feet and I should be more comfortable another 10,000 feet higher up. Finally, we are shackled to our oars, as it were, and cannot take advantage of juicy targets that float into view. Like, for example, the lovely Rumpler that passed beneath us as we flew south past Arras whilst dutifully holding station with the Harry Tates.

There was a heavy base of cloud at 8000 feet and we dropped through it as we approached Bapaume and the sector of the front our friends were to photograph. From that point on we had the uncomfortable job of sitting just below the clouds and patrolling a beat north and south at slow speed whilst Archie registered on us with the advantage of knowing the height of the cloud just above us. Every twenty seconds or so, I pressed on the rudder bar to change direction slightly without showing a turn to the Huns observing from below. Woof-woof-CRACK! The first two bursts were good hundred yards off. The third was immediately to my front and port side and left a neat slash in the fabric of my wing. And so we continued, minute after minute…

“Swazi” Howe suddenly appeared of my starboard side and waggled his wings. I looked about, seeing nothing at first and then I noticed the large group of Pfalz scouts about a thousand yards off. They must have emerged from the cloud bank to find us directly in their sights! Now the scrap was on. I opened the throttle and it seemed like ages before the grid was up to its normal fighting speed. Already the Huns were among us – lovely machines with red noses and wings and white tails. I saw a Pfalz on the tail of an SE and turned to follow but tracer flashed in front of me and I zoomed into an Immelmann. Two of the buggers! I dived to regain speed and came up behind one of them, only to find another Pfalz moving in behind me. I zoomed above to get a picture of the fight. We had still not spread out too badly and I could see Howe and Glynn twisting about. I dived on one enemy machine and got a short burst away. The rounds entered the fuselage behind the cockpit, but the machine continued under control. Now I had to evade again until an SE chased a Hun off my tail.

And then, inexplicably, the sky emptied. I searched about and saw no sign of friend or enemy. I dived a little and studied the ground below. Ahead about a half-mile and about 500 feet below was a light-coloured machine – a Pfalz. I closed on it quickly. Perhaps it was the machine I fired on earlier, for it seemed to be in some difficulty. I lined it up in my Aldis and waited with my thumb on the trigger until I was within a hundred yards. I fired and saw my rounds hitting before I had to break away. I banked about and found the Hun again, just off my right side. His propeller was stopping. I throttled well back and looped about. One more long burst was all it took and the machine tumbled into the ground. I was now down low over Hunland and climbed for all I was worth to get out of range of ground fire. Another SE approached from behind and took up station on my left wingtip. It was Young. Next came Howe, Dolan, Glynn, and Kiddie – everyone accounted for. Even our RE8s appeared in the distance. We reformed on them and walked them home. It had been a good afternoon’s work. Young had seen my Pfalz go down and I had my fiftieth victory!

Fullofit - An excellent day for Smirnoff, a confirmed kill and then two more to go with it, let's hope they are rubber stamped too. That two seater was a gem, trying to claw it's way up with all those aircraft buzzing around. He was just asking for trouble and Pyotr gave it to him. Someone needs to remind that French CO that these Americans and Russians are there trying to rescue his country. As for Jacob, other than high up he didn't actually see any Strutters, so whether they decided against it i'm not sure.

NR - A couple of quiet sorties for Cunningham which with the aircraft shortage is no bad thing and in that weather too. At least they've been restocked ready for tomorrow. Sounds like Hayden is a very civilised, if a little soft CO, drawing lots to see who is flying, very fair minded and all that.

Lou - It's all going very well for Jacob at the moment, but the fickle hand of war (and the gong fairy) can strike very quickly so he's not taking anything for granted.

Carrick - Oh no, poor Dubra. He was doing alright as well.

Raine - MacAlister did a fine job on that escort mission, not easy at all when you're so low down. They were asking for trouble and they got it but MacAlister et al kept the Hun away from the two seaters. That's the one problem with colouring your aircraft up like Blackpool promenade, it's rather easily spotted when you could well do without it. MacAlister taught the Pfalz a tough lesson he'll never forget.

"A great deal of an aeroplane could be holed without affecting its ability to fly. Wings and fuselage could be—and often were—pierced in 50 places, missing the occupants by inches (blissfully unaware of how close it had come until they returned to base). Then the sailmaker would carefully cover each hole with a square inch of Irish linen frayed at the edges and with a brushful of dope make our aircraft 'serviceable' again within an hour."

Oberflugmeister Jacob Kühn, EK1, HHO
Marine-Feld-Jagdstaffel 1
Jabbeke airfield

22 confirmed kills (1 awaiting confirmation)

6th May 1918

The morning sortie involved Kette Zwei only as Kette Eins was already out on patrol down towards Ypres. Kette Zwei was tasked with patrolling the lines south of Nieuwpoort once more.

The weather showed no signs of easing up. The rain was torrential, at least upto 6000 feet anyway and the cloud cover complete.

Jacob and the others climbed up to 14000 feet without incident and headed out to the lines.

They reached the lines and turned south when Jacob saw dark specks in the midst of the clouds over to the right. MFJ1 were higher for a change as Jacob kept his eyes on them. They were definitely aircraft and finally Jacob was able to identify them as SPAD's.

Jacob hadn't come up against SPADs yet but had studied them hard and knew their tricks.

The SPADs had by now seen Jacob's Kette as well and started to climb up towards them.

'Foolish, very foolish' thought Jacob. He circled and looked for an opening. The SPADs climbed quickly but MFJ1 were ready for them.

Jacob picked a target and dived onto him. The SPAD tried to roll away but not before Jacob had hit him hard with a powerful burst. Jacob recovered his height and looked for his target once more.

He couldn't see the one he'd hit which must have dived below the clouds so he picked another who was passing underneath. He rolled and dived onto the SPAD and fired, hitting the enemy hard. This time Jacob followed the SPAD as it tried to roll and kept firing. The SPAD dived but Jacob went with him.

As they came out of the clouds Jacob saw his target levelling out and pounced. Hitting him with a devastating burst which tore the SPAD's wing away.

Jacob watched as it spun down into the ground near the front lines.

He took stock and saw no more enemy aircraft. He did see more Albatrosse below him and zoomed down towards them and formed up as they headed home.

On landing Jacob learned his SPAD had been seen crashing by Leutenant Heinrich who was happy to confirm it.

The afternoon sortie was to head south west towards Ypres and would consist of Kette Zwei again as Kette Eins had an escort flight to complete.

The weather was no better and Jacob noticed the airfield was taking a hell of a battering in all this rain as he got airborne.

They climbed after forming up and headed out towards Ypres once they'd reached 14000 feet.

All went without incident until they were nearing the Ypres salient.

They then spotted a formation of aircraft some way below them and heading across the lines.

Jacob recognised the shape straight away.....Camels, rapidly becoming MFJ1's 'bete noire' thought Jacob.

Once again however MFJ1 had the height advantage. 'Twice in one day, see what happens when we gain height on OUR side of the lines' thought Jacob.

MFJ1 selected their targets and dived down. Jacob watched for a second longer as the Camels tried to climb. He went after one who was now trying to attack a kamerad. He fired into him and came around to the left. Just at that moment bullets hit his wing as a Camel below took a pot shot at him, but then seemed to stall.

Jacob completed an Immelmann and zoomed onto the Camel who had now recovered but had lost all it's speed. Jacob hit him with a good burst and then followed the Camel down.

He came up behind and blasted the Camel. Another burst must have hit the pilot as the Camel nosed down and went straight into the ground.

Jacob surveyed the damage to his wing and thought it best to head home.

He checked around him but didn't see another aircraft until he landed at Jabbeke.

Later that evening he spoke with Oberleutenant Saschenberg.

"A busy day for us today Jacob, but as always you made your mark" said Saschenberg.

"Heinrich confirmed your kill this morning and I have confirmation of your claim yesterday as well meine freund. However no one seemed to see your Camel this afternoon, everyone on the ground was under shelter I imagine" continued Saschenberg.

"So that's 24 confirmed kills now Oberflugmeister. A tidy sum but don't stop now. Keep that focus and determination that has brought you here Jacob" finished Saschenberg.

"I fully intend to Herr Oberleutenant" said Jacob as he saluted and left.

RAF - Indeed he is, and soon enough he'll reach that status, if things go accordingly... Big if, anyway. Sadly it seems like the 64th has been doing a ton of trading of that sort.
Good to see that Abbott is doing well over in England, look forward to seeing what else he'll be getting up to there!

Raine - Here's hoping! One can only be surprised at the Captain's current obsession with Lehman as it stands anyway.
Escort missions certainly can be a pain, but regardless, good job with that Pfalz!

Tross - With all those bloody fights, time to recover certainly ain't bad. Hayden does seem to be a pretty decent chap in that regard, maybe a bit too soft at times.
A good day for Jacob with two confirmations, even if the camel wasn't confirmed, and a meeting with a new foe in the form of the SPADs. No sign of slowing down so far either, here's hoping that continues!

Carrick - Welcome to du Fay, and good screenshots! What funky coloured Huns.

2/LT Dean Andrews Cunningham
№64 Squadron RAF
Izles-Les-Hameux, Flanders
6th May, 1918.

4 confirmed

With the bad weather persisting into today, we continued to operate as normal, though now operating in a flight of 6.... For as long as we could anyway. Hayden announced that we would be undertaking a patrol into enemy lines, even if we were still operating at greatly reduced numbers, but that we were to keep at it anyway and worst come to worst, should we see a superior foe we would just turn back and flee for our lines as they wouldn't likely follow us. Less than ideal as this was, we had to go with it and so we did, climbing into our machines and heading out led by Hayden himself, Lehman on his wing, second in the formation. Honestly, this was getting ridiculous, why did Hayden always have to keep that man around... Regardless, at least we were led by someone who knew what he was doing, which was a relief.

We climbed and crossed the lines, going halfway through our patrol when suddenly out of the clouds came a large formation of 12 Huns heading right for us. This was bad, given they had 6 more men than we did, and those were the kinds of odds that even I wasn't willing to touch this far over the Hun lines. Thankfully, Hayden had spotted them and we turned, starting to fly home as we thought. Try as I hard to keep formation, I accidentally slipped out and ended up ahead of everyone, though I ended up hanging back just in front of the formation, not wanting to abandon everyone as they were fleeing should the worst come to worst. Despite our expectations, the Hun did in fact follow us over the lines, and as we got closer and closer to our own home field, even despite friendly Ack-Ack starting to off I started climbing up and above my flight, preparing for the inevitable fight. Looking behind me and seeing such a massive formation of Huns was certainly concerning and made me think twice about what exactly I was going to do once the fighting starts, but with the friendly Archie and the possibility of at least someone else seeing we're in trouble and joining in we at least had some cards up our sleeve.

Soon we were over our field, and with nowhere else to run the flight started to turn into the inevitable merge and engagement, and so did I. Flying towards the swarm from above, I set my eyes on what must've been the Hun flight leader as he was at the head of their entire formation now currently on the tail of Captain Hayden actively firing at him. Deciding that a Hun flight lead would make for a great target, I dove down at him, firing as I passed him and made him break off from Hayden, then rapidly turning and rising again fire at the Hun as he tried to dive on me. This proved to be a bad move on his part, as with his dive I once again zoomed past him and gained an advantage which I would keep for our entire fight.

Twisting my plane I reversed from a climb into another dive and followed the Hun down, firing away at every single opportunity, looping above him when I feared overshooting and turning tightly with him whenever he would try to turn away from me, slowing down to keep behind him and relentlessly pelt him with bullets, not giving him a chance to recover or find his way out of my sights, staying on his six constantly. Eventually we found ourselves close to the ground and the Hun's engine finally gave in and stopped spinning. Still, I did not give him mercy and kept going, firing away until his wing suddenly snapped off mid-burst and I had to violently push my plane downward to evade it. Then I watched as his broken plane spiralled out of control and crashed right next to our field... Now close to the ground and not having sight on any other Huns I turned my plane and went for a landing, emerging unscatched from this fight and eager to fill out a claim for this one.

Shortly after landing the rest of the Flight came in, minus two who were unforunately lost during the battle. It was a shame, that, as not only were they good airmen that we desperately needed but also because they had to die so close to the safety of the home field... Regardless, I went ahead and filled out my claim for the Hun, but not before Hayden approached me and thanked me for getting the Boche off his tail and then spinning around him as I did. Unfortunately, besides the lost airmen the damage sustained by most of our fliers also meant that there was now only 3 machines remaining operation and we still had another patrol for the day...

Weary from what transpired earlier in the morning we took off in the afternoon in a flight of three and headed towards enemy lines, concerned about another possible encounter that never came. The clouds too played to our advantage as they thickened since this morning to the point where we frequently lost sight of one another, so if a Hun attacked we could simply hide inside of them. Fortunately, no Hun came and we went home. There I was welcomed with most frustrating news, as apparently my claim on the Hun had been denied in favour of supposed Archie gunners who had seen me working on the Hun but apparently put the finally shot into him, blowing his wing off with their guns as opposed to me doing the job. This of course was ridiculous, but given that Hayden himself only seen the first part of the fight and no one else saw anything, along with claims of "the wreck clearly looking blown apart" my claim was rejected even in spite of my protest. Blown apart? The bloody thing crashed in a fireball, what kind of experts did we have doing the examination there!? Nevermind that, not a single archie shell blew besides us while we were fighting at treetop... Curse those blatant liars! If they want to play it like that, fine! They can go face the whole Hun air force themselves! Next time the Boches decide to go drop a few bombs on their heads, don't even bother calling us, they're on their own down there! See if I care...!

NR, machine gun slinging sky-snipers! LOL.
Fixing SPAD cockpit view? I think it’s been suggested a few times. Devs even said they (may) look into it. Guess they’re still looking, but if you’re in SPAD’s pit you won’t see much.
Whoever stopped Lehman from participating in that bombing run knew exactly what would have happened. The ignorant rookie would surely drop bombs at low level fragging himself and probably rest of the flight. Keep him away from things that go bang.
A German, a Russian and an American walk into a bar in France, except it’s a bistro.
I remember the good old days when men were men and Strutters were dead meat. Not any longer.
So Dean drew the short end of the stick, a patrol in the muck and he also gets Lehman for company to boot. Oh, the cruel fate! At least the Hun had sim pity and stayed away.
No such leniency on the afternoon hop. Lehman in the lead, ah well, got to look at the bright side. He’d never spot the enemy and therefore an encounter in these clouds would be an unlikely possibility.
A drink after a mission like that is a must. I’d instruct our miserable hero to actually have one of those ahead of the mission too.
And today, another nail biter with twice the Huns as those of the RAF. Good job saving the Commander’s hide from the Albatros. More losses - those poor Ack- Emmas won’t sleep tonight. But the worst blow comes from the Archie crews. What a kick to the pants. I agree with Dean, let the bombers do their bit during the next air raid. See how many shot down airplanes they’ll claim then.

Lou, thanks for the kind words. Let’s hope the confirmations start rolling in. Pyotr is not a patient man.
As for Freddy, enjoy the freedom while he can and prey they don’t assign him to SPADs.

Raine, finally a half century. The celebration will definitely put George out of action for at least a day.

Albert, logic escapes me why the bombers would take off during a raid. They weren’t even Strutters.
Jacob definitely dodged a bullet that day with those Strutters staying high up.
Now, onto today’s proceedings. First of all, well done keeping height advantage during both encounters. Second, masterful job on that SPAD. No enemy will survive a blown off wing. That kill was in the bag. Unfortunately same could not be said about that Camel. Look at the bright side: better a dead, unconfirmed Camel than a confirmed Albatros, right? Congrats on the latest victories.

Carrick, way to go! Get back up on that horse. Welcome Henri to the War.

The afternoon sortie was another patrol in the clouds. The sky was thick with clouds so dense that one could fly next to an enemy formation and not see them. This is exactly what happened to Pyotr. He saw clouds, more clouds and nothing but the clouds, then suddenly a dozen of Boche two-seaters appeared right in front of him. He froze and frankly thought these were friendly planes this far into French kept territory. A bullet to his petrol tank changed his mind. He quickly disengaged and searched for the closest piece of road to land on.

Hq phoned said e/a over the lines, Zee Captainie said dispatch II Section. It took a good 15 mins to start and warm Zee engines then off into the wild Blue. Our 6 a/c circled up to about 3000 ft only to see bombs hitting our aerodrome some close. The flight leed must have seen the Boche because the climb became steeper. A shuttering began as I pull up steeper then it happened a stall. As she went into a spin , I put everything in natural and eased off the power. Slowly she recovered screaming as we headed down. I managed to pull out at 800 a close run thing. RTB

Carrick - Bonjour Henri. I hope he's a bit luckier than Dubra. A fun packed start against those funky Pfalzs, you wouldn't lose them on a dark night. Well done getting out of that spin. If it was one of those flat spins which happens in the SPAD they're tricky indeed.

NR - Just when 64 Squadron could have done with a couple of quiet run outs as they regroup they get nothing of the sort. Instead it's a jaunt across the lines when you're almost certainly going to meet up with the enemy and in strength which is what happened. I can only assume the mission was a direct order from the brass otherwise I'd question Hayden's judgement. Talking of Hayden, Cunningham saved his bacon there and then he has the gall to reject Cunningham's claim. He shouldn't take it personally though and certainly not in an angry way. Anger leads to hate and hate leads to..... making mistakes and getting his ass shot down.

Fullofit - That was a tough call with those two seaters, getting pranged straight away, thankfully the bullet had his aircraft's name on it rather than Pyotr's. I see Pyotr is still waiting on those claims, hopefully they'll be confirmed. Jacob is quite pragmatic when it comes to claims, all he can do is shoot them down, he knows he shot them down and they know he shot them down. The rest is out of his hands.

Oberflugmeister Jacob Kühn, EK1, HHO
Marine-Feld-Jagdstaffel 1
Jabbeke airfield

24 confirmed kills

7th May 1918

Morning sortie

Jacob, was in Saschenberg's office. "Jacob, I want you to take Kette Zwei up and head down to Menen. I'll be leading Kette Eins in about half an hour's time" started Saschenberg.

"The weather is still dreadful and personally I'd sooner us sit it out until it improves but orders are orders" Saschenberg continued.

"Thank you Herr Oberleutenant, I'll do my very best" said Jacob.

"Stay safe Oberflugmeister"

"You too Herr Oberleutenant".

Twenty minutes later Jacob and Kette Zwei were airborne and climbing away from Jabbeke.

'Mein gott, Saschenberg wasn't joking about the weather' thought Jacob as he checked everyone was in formation.

They'd reached about 4000 feet when Jacob caught sight of flak bursts over Aertrycke airfield. He scanned above hard and eventually made out several black dots. They were circling whilst the flak bursts popped nearby.

Jacob saw the shape, square and box-like...... Breguet bombers.

He signalled to the others. Just then he saw several of the enemy aircraft start diving towards them.

"Here we go again" said Jacob to no-one in particular as he charged his guns.

Kette Zwei nosed up to face the attack. Jacob avoided two attacking Frenchmen and rolled around to the left. He saw one Breguet ahead and fired into him. Bullets from the two seater pinged off Jacob's fuselage and Jacob completed a 360 degree roll and fired again. The Brequet dived but Jacob followed. He fired again and saw steam and smoke emerging from the French machine.

The gunner was still active, but Jacob put a telling burst into the Breguet which burst into flames and crashed into the ground near the village of Aertrycke.

Jacob took stock and saw some Albatrosse heading home and a few Breguets already going the other way.

He decided it best to head home as well. On landing he went to clean up and file his report.

Four Breguets were downed although an Albatros was lost too although Oberflugmeister Brenner was not too badly hurt.

Afternoon sortie

The whole Jasta flew the afternoon sortie out to the lines around Nieuwpoort. The weather was just as bad as in the morning. Thankfully no serious incidents occurred and all Albatrosse landed safely some 80 minutes later.

Later on Oberleutenant Saschenberg spoke with Jacob again.

"A tough call today Jacob, those Breguets are fearless, all you can do is be fearless back. You managed the situation well judging by the reports I've seen" said Saschenberg.

"Thank you Herr Oberleutenant. We did all we could and I'm glad Oberflugmeister Brenner isn't too bad" said Jacob.

"We'll have to wait for confirmation of your Breguet Jacob, you were close to Aertrycke airfield and you know what those flak gunners are like" said Saschenberg.

"I do have some more news for you. Good news I believe. Over these last few weeks I've been observing you and your leadership of the various flights I've put you in charge of. I've also spoken to the other pilots who agree with me that you are calm in a storm and don't make mistakes" said Saschenberg.

"That's very kind of them. They're a good bunch. I'm lucky to have such a group around me" said Jacob.

"Well, I've decided that you deserve some more leadership opportunities and to that end I'm promoting you to Leutenant-zur-see" said Saschenberg.

Jacob was delighted, "I'm honoured herr Oberleutenant" he said.

"Please......call me Gotthard, at least in here" said Saschenberg with a smile.

"Thank you..... Gotthard" said Jacob rather stutteringly.

"You're welcome Jacob, now, shall we go and celebrate?" finished Saschenberg.

Albert, yes the bloody claims board is dragging its feet. In the end they went for compromise. They’ve decided to award Pyotr one of the claims and reject the other one. Oh well, I wish Smirnov had Jacob’s approach when it comes to claims.
Looks like Oberflugmeister Kühn had his own run in with the bombers. Well done on bringing down that Bréguet. Setting it on fire should help with getting a confirmation. It is difficult to miss a falling ball of fire.
Well now, Jacob is moving on up. A promotion - that should increase his pay a bit. He’ll need after the latest celebratory bash at the Kasino. Congrats!

2 confirmed kills

The claim for the two-seater shot down last morning during the airfield raid has been denied. It was thought to have been a failure during takeoff. The blue Albatros, on the other hand, was confirmed. The Strutter drivers were more than willing to confirm his kill. His tally stood at two now. Pyotr was still bitter about the two-seater, it was obviously his!

Today the HQ sent the escadrille on patrol of friendly front line sector south of Amiens? They caught a formation of unescorted bombers on their way back. Smirnov still remembered their sting from last time and was looking for some payback. Lieutenant Rougevin-Baville got to them first and had one on the run soon enough. Pyotr opened fire from much further away this time and dove under quickly. He then went around for another go. He saw the lead bomber turn around and leave the one Smirnov attacked to fend for himself. He was now approaching his target from below but didn’t fire. He noticed he knocked the German machine’s engine on his first pass. He was now debating if he should risk another attack or wait excruciatingly long for the two-seater to float gently to the ground. He decided he didn’t want to wait and circled around for one more go. Pyotr opened fire from far off and continued to pour bullets into the two-seater. After that last attack the bomber went into a spiralling dive. This should make things go much faster now. The bugger crashed north of Esquinnoy and Smirnov proceeded to join the rest of his squadron already circling the airfield.

Fullofit - Well, guess that's just the view to live with then, unfortunately! Hopefully live with and not die with, anyway!
Wouldn't be surprising if that was the case, fears of him killing everyone before the flight even reached the Huns, though at least he did manage to survive within that furball against the whole Albatross formation, god knows how. Probably dove away and just fled.
Sure, a bistro it is then! The American and Russian then walk out and the German is not seen again?
Truly though, Dean has had a few all over the place sorties in those two days. Bad weather and fruitless flights led by Lehman aside, those at least offer some respite with all the bad luck and constant losses, so that's some sort of bonus. Though I fear if Dean had to drink every time he went out on such a patrol, he'd become an utter alcoholic by now and would return to sleeping with sacks of potatoes.
As for the last mission though, that one was indeed quite tough. Rather tense with those Huns deciding to actually go all the way after us and press on right above our field, but I suppose it did somewhat work out. Main concern for Dean was having someone dive down on him, but surprisingly no one did. Lehman managed to get out unscatched of course, knowing him probably through flashing some hidden Hun hand signal or, well, whatever magicks the man could conjure up there. Hah, the AM's at 64th never sleep as it is, given how they cycle planes and airmen on an almost daily basis.
Truly is a shame about those Archie crews though, no respect for anyone in the air it seems. Seems to me like they're just jealous, we fly and they don't, that's probably why!

On the topic of those sky-snipers, I see Pyotr himself has had several more run ins with them, one of which was a lot less fortunate than the other! A busted engine in exchange for shooting down one of them seems to make up for it, at least! Good thoughts on not letting it glide down, who knows, it may have made it by some miracle and that would complicate matters of confirmation. That, and the thing could potentially live to fight another day. Not so much anymore though!
Hopefully it gets confirmed, and on that note congratulations on the 2nd victory! Shame about the gun induced 'failure' though.

Tross - Certainly seems like it's another case of Brass not knowing how things are actually going and having too high expectations for things. Hayden may have some questionable judgement, especially in regards to sending rookies off as flight leaders, but it certainly isn't a venture he'd decide to go on if he could help it. Certainly a shame he decided to just outright reject that claim, in favour of Archie, who I think is the only one Dean currently has a grudge against now, but hey; looking at the bright side at least he managed to prove himself some more to the Captain, so maybe good things may eventually come from that! Surely that Archie grudge wouldn't lead to any bad decisions though...!
Congratulations to Jacob on a most succesful fight against the French machine and most important though, a promotion! Here's hoping that he won't have nearly the same luck as Dean did in regards to having his kills claimed by some greedy man with a big cannon.

Carrick - Besides the bad luck with a spin, at least Henri is doing good for himself! Good.

Another dull day today, filled with two empty patrols and then half a day in the Mess spent debating the realities of our life and contemplating why is it that we seem to always have all kinds of misfortunes falling on our heads, be it the Hun bombers that always manage to make it through and leave us with a bombed up airfield and leave before we get there, or the constant losses we tend to endure whenever we go out to intercept anyone and anything that even dares to fly a meter into our lines, and that isn't even mentioning the lack of good replacements in terms of both craft and manpower. At the very least not all rookies turn out to be bizarre like the Lehman fella... The lads at this point are starting to put together a half hearted theory in regards to our Squadron simply being hexed, bewitched, cursed and all the lovely things alike. Not taking it seriously, of course, but at this point I'm starting to second guess if our jokes might just be more real than we think...

The morning patrol seen us sent off east in a four-man flight of the more experienced pilots of the Squadron, sans Hayden who stayed behind to do whatever it is that a man of his position tends to do when he isn't flying. Probably filling out reports... The weather was still bad and the clouds seemed to get thicker by the day, so we could barely see ourselves as we flew and I'm honestly surprised we managed to avoid a collision. Thankfully though, none of that sort had occured and we managed to get to our designated patrol zone, or so we thought anyway and spent some time there before heading back with no incident. The second flight of the day was entirely similar, with a climb through the bloated sky followed by a calm, if not confusing and a bit too cloudy patrol where thankfully we didn't encounter any Huns. Well, not that I can say for certain. Given the state the sky was in, I wouldn't be surprised if we managed to fly formation with an entire Jasta of theirs and simply didn't notice them.

Regardless, we ended up coming home and quickly retreated to the mess where we continued our inane and mostly time passing discussions. Some chaps were writing letters, which did make me wonder if I should send a few of my own. Surely would've been nice to let folk know how things are going, but at the same time I can't help but wonder if hearing tales of my misadventures would only serve to make them more worried instead... Now if I was to down myself another Hun... Letters home, utmost urgency, from Edinburgh's ace, Dean Cunningham. Now that would sound quite nice, I do think... A curiosity too would be to see if I can send one off to that helpful Lieutenant that helped me fill in my diary while I was stuck at the hospital. I shall keep it all in mind!

Carrick - Henri seems to be having a regular run-in with funky Pfalzs, white and yellow this time. Shame his one couldn't be confirmed.

Fullofit - Good to see Pyotr learned from the previous mission and got underneath the two seater when he wasn't putting holes in it. Hopefully he's got a confirmed kill from it. Shame about the denied two seater but he's making steady progress and hopefully getting used to the SPADs foibles.

NR - I know two missions without incident won't win wars, but it's giving 64 squadron time to regroup and rebuild. Although it sounds like the pilots are spending any free time doing an awful lot of thinking. Maybe too much thinking if they're believing the squadron is in someway jinxed. Cunningham becoming an ace will go someway towards dispelling those myths.

24 confirmed kills (one awaiting confirmation)

8th May 1918

Morning sortie

Oberleutenant Saschenberg confirmed he would be leading Kette Zwei himself on the morning sortie. Kette Eins, which consisted of Leutenant Heinrich and three others was already out escorting some two seaters.

Saschenberg explained they would be heading south west towards the Ypres salient and as far as Ypres itself. The weather had improved immensely, although the airfield was still sodden. The sun was shining and only a few clouds were around to spoil the crystal clear views. Saschenberg did say however that clear skies went both ways, the enemy could see much further too. However with the sun at our backs we had clear advantage as long as we used it wisely.

The Kette took off and after climbing headed off towards Ypres.

Jacob was on Saschenberg's right shoulder and was thoroughly enjoying the improved weather. What he wasn't thoroughly enjoying was the heavy flak they encountered as they neared the Ypres salient. Several bursts were near enough to rock Jacob's Albatros.

They were now over Ypres directly and Jacob could see the ruins of the cloth hall down below.

They proceeded with their patrol without incident until they were on their last leg and were about to turn for home. Jacob looked low down to his left as he faced north and caught something.....a movement...a shift in the green and brown of the ground below. There it was again. Jacob could now make out three shapes, clearly aircraft and coming across the lines towards the German side.

He signalled to the others and began a shallow spiral down. He could now see the red, white and blue roundals and recognised the shape as Strutters, three to be precise and seemingly oblivious to Jacob and the rest of Kette Zwei.

Jacob now increased his descent and chose a target. Picking the leader he now rolled and dived down onto him. The distance between them was brought to nothing in an instant and Jacob fired a long burst into the Strutter before levelling out. The Strutter rolled and dived as the other two suffered similar attacks.

Jacob turned and went after the Strutter as he now levelled out. The Strutter's gunner was very active and constantly blazed away with his gun. Jacob lined up and fired again. He watched the tracers smack into the fuselage and wings, but he also felt bullets hit his aircraft from the gunner. The Strutter rolled and dived again. Jacob checked what the other two were doing and as they were under attack from the rest of Kette Zwei he focussed again on his Strutter.

He dived down and fired again, this time aiming for the gunner who was firing back. He saw the gunner shudder and fall onto his gun. Now Jacob came around for the coup de grâce. He lined up and put another long burst into the Strutter who now lurched over and spiralled down, all the way down into the ground.

Jacob levelled off and realising he was west of Ypres now started climbing. He saw two other Albatrosse nearby and formed up with them. Together they headed home.

On landing and joining the huddle in the middle of the airfield, all three Strutters had been destroyed and although no Albatrosse had been lost, every single aircraft in Kette Zwei had bullet holes in it.

"Splendid job Jacob, I saw your Strutter hit the deck" said Saschenberg.

"Those Strutters are trouble though, they don't give an inch and fight for everything" said Jacob

Afternoon sortie

Jacob himself took Kette Zwei up on the afternoon sortie which was returning to the Ypres salient although staying to the north this time. The weather was still excellent as they set off.

The mission went without any real issues and without meeting the enemy.

That evening Jacob, Leutenant Heinrich and Oberleutenant Saschenberg were enjoying a bottle of Napoleon brandy in Saschenberg's office.

"By the way Jacob, your claim from yesterday has been confirmed as well. There wasn't much left of that Breguet by the time they put the fire out" said Saschenberg.

"You're blessed Jacob, even the flak gunners didn't try to claim that one" said Heinrich.

"It was that bottle of schnapps I gave them" said Jacob

"They've always been cheapskates those gunners" said Heinrich, "I'd have at least wanted two bottles" remarked Heinrich.

The three officers laughed.

"We'll have to find another name for you now Jacob, 26 kills and all that" said Heinrich......."how about the Falcon of Flanders" said Heinrich.

Jacob and Saschenberg laughed loudly. "I think someone is enjoying the brandy too much" said Saschenberg and Jacob agreed.

"Seriously though Jacob, you're moving up quickly, and headquarters are taking a serious interest in your and our exploits" said Saschenberg.

"That can only be a good thing Gotthard, if it's raising our profile, when it comes to getting new aircraft for example" said Jacob

"You're still dreaming about that Fokker DVII" joked Saschenberg.

"True Gotthard, true" said Jacob grinning.

NR, that is exactly how Lehman survived - avoid fight altogether. That, or the secret Hun hand signals. Does he have any black crosses painted on his plane?
But seriously, we could use some of those secret hand signals. Unfortunately I only know one and it’s probably the reason Smirnov gets the first serving of enemy bullets to the engine. It also unfortunate with the two-seater claims. They tend to be more often than not rejected. Perhaps it’s another secret agreement between the claims board and the Archie crews. Scouts get the single-seaters and two-seaters go to AAA.
It doesn’t do any good dwelling on the misfortune of the squadron. Either get some pixie dust to sprinkle all over each pilot (except Lehman) or simply explain it the same way every other unfortunate squadron does: c’est la guerre.
Dean should enjoy this stretch of bad weather. It definitely helps the Ack-Emmas. I’m certain they’ve finally had some proper sleep, what with not having to patch any of the machines today.
Yes, a letter to the folks with the story of that fifth victory would be something. It’ll happen, I’m sure of it.

Albert, it’ll take more than that for Pyotr to learn anything. He’s a stubborn one, just like his mount.
So, a meeting with the dreaded Strutters finally. The luck was on Jacob’s side this time catching the despised machines below, with no chance of them swooping down from above and ramming our Flieger’s rear. Well done! I hope every Strutter gets confirmed.
Ah yes, Falcon of Flanders. That sounds too landlubberly. There should be a maritime theme attached to the name. What about Barracuda of Flanders?

The B Flight was en route to patrol friendly front line sector between Noyon and Roye. As they were approaching the front they spotted a flight of enemy bombers flying ahead of them in the same direction. They were quickly catching up to the enemy but no one was sure if they should attack. If they intercept the bombers, they will not be able to continue with their mission. The Germans made the decision for them. Their Kette began to turn and shoot at the SPADs. Pyotr teamed up with Sous Lieutenant Duret and went after one of the beasts. The two worked well. When one was attacking the other was waiting his turn. Duret bagged the Hun however by shooting off one of the wings. There was no point continuing with the mission after that and the formation turned back to base. The weather seemed to be improving.
