The current new map exes use different files for the single mission target/base selection map, and the in-flight pilot map:






You can see that Cyprus is much smaller in the target/base selection map than in the in-flight pilot map, because the target/base selection map is smaller.
In the in-flight pilot map a circle is a tile which is a 4.096 kilometre square, and we find the larger map to be really useful in online games, for judging both bearings and distances.
The icons are well separated until the enemy planes are in visible distance, at which point the map is not needed.
