NotRelevant - That is the way of war it seems, or at least the air war. Be thankful for the quiet days, even though they never come close to making up for the days of chaos and death. Dean and his crew have had more than their share of the latter. Rather a revolving door at 64 Squadron. Here's hoping the next batch of replacements bring some good luck for the entire outfit.

MFair - Nice to see Ludwig back with his chums and ready to return to the fight. So will he be keeping in touch with his attentive angel of mercy?

Fullofit - Quite the night fight there, tracers streaking every which way. Those Strutters were hellbent on taking out Rudi and that one nearly did via collision; a close call made even more frightening in the dimness of pre-dawn. Fuchs and his kette did well. But how that one Strutter managed to turn inside you man, and to the left no less! The Devil himself must have been piloting that mount. Brill sunrise pic - beware the Hun in the sun.

Carrick - Capes and leather boots? Predecessor to the super hero look perhaps, or are they kinky boots? Nice shot of that falling Hun B/R bus.

Albert - Congratulations to Jacob on scoring a triple and on his well-earned gong! Best be on guard now, don't go tempting "The Curse".

Captain Frederick Abbott is on his way to England, having survived last night's send-off bash, and having made his final farewells first thing this morning. He will sorely miss his chums at 65 Squadron, who surprised him at dinner yesterday evening with the gift of a silver cigarette case with the new RAF crest engraved on the lid. A further inscription inside read, "Presented to Captain F.H.B. 'Freddy' Abbott, a fine fellow and a fine friend, from the Officers and Men of No. 65". He was beyond touched by their thoughtful gift and sentiments, fighting back a tear as he sincerely thanked everyone there. War may be hell, but the camaraderie and fellowship created in its wake comes directly from heaven.

Jacob thanks you for the kind award and far from cursing him he hopes the extra bling will impress his nurse friend.

Carrick - Dubra did a fine job on that two seater let's hope it gets confirmed. Some good screenshots too.

Fullofit - Yet another run in with Strutters for Rudi but he came out on top and then bags a SPAD into the bargain. If the SPADs were escorting the Strutters they were far too late to the party. Cracking sunrise shot too.

MFair - Glad to see Kemp is back with the Jasta and just in time to miss the recent bad weather so hopefully straight back into action.

NR - A job well done for Cunningham and 64 which given the troubles of recent days is no bad thing. Time to take stock, regroup and come out fighting.

Lou - A fine send off for Freddy and a lovely gift from the squadron. I hope the goings-on back in blighty are going to be as entertaining and interesting to him as his flying exploits.

Wings and fuselage could be—and often were—pierced in 50 places, missing the occupants by inches (blissfully unaware of how close it had come until they returned to base). Then the sailmaker would carefully cover each hole with a square inch of Irish linen frayed at the edges and with a brushful of dope make our aircraft 'serviceable' again within an hour."

MFair, welcome back to the Front. You go get ‘em,

NR, gambling with their lives. That is exactly right. You never know when a Strutter will swoop from behind and ram your plane.
Hopefully the 64th isn’t putting too much strain on the resupply chain, what with all new pilots going directly there. All other squadrons must be feeling the pinch.
A quiet mission is what Cunningham needed. Not just for the morale but to rest as well. And someone needs to come up with a better way to communicate approaching enemy bombers. By the time the aerodrome receives the call, the bombers are on them. The faster fire rate on those Lewis guns means only one thing - you’ll be changing those ammo trays at a quicker rate, that’s for sure.

Lou, thanks, but beware of the Hun in the sun? What harm could fellow Germans do to him, apart from friendly fire?
I don’t know. Was there a Kamikaze Strutter squadron active during the Great War? Germans are at a disadvantage with this new form of fighting.
So, Freddy’s safe for the foreseeable future. Not much danger in England, apart from the occasional Gotha raid. But I didn’t know Abbott smokes. If he doesn’t here’s a great opportunity to pick up the habit. Just watch out for those yellow teeth.

Thanks Albert, the only time Rudi can admire the scenery when there’s no action.
You know, this Strutter attack routine is getting old.

This morning would be an easy mission. Schwarm Zwei was sent to defend Matigny airfield. It was practically next door to their own aerodrome. The sun was shining and the overall mood at Jasta 19 was good. Rudi took his Schwarm up to altitude and began the patrol. They’ve been at it for a good half hour before they noticed the arrival of enemy planes. They were attempting to hide their approach in the sun, but it didn’t work completely. Fuchs gave the signal to attack and took a closer look at what they were against. Strutters. Why was he not surprised? But then there was a second wave behind just moving out of the sun’s glare. Perhaps a SPAD escort? Rudi moved his plane into position, or rather positioned it in a way to spoil any direct attacks from above. They merged and Fuchs entered the fray. Strutters remained above looking for an opportunity to dive on the Fokkers while the SPADs joined in. Rudi continued to track any potential targets while climbing to meet them. Then, suddenly he heard and saw a mid-air collision. It was a terrifying sight. A multitude of wings fluttering about in the air, two balls of fire going down, trailing black tails of thick smoke. Who was it? Could it be? No! Albert! Tybelsky’s machine was careening down to earth followed by the silver carcass of a Strutter. This can’t be! Rudi was paralyzed with dread, grief and rage at the same time. He’d just lost his best friend. Those savage Strutters will pay! There was another sickening sound of a collision. Rudi couldn’t feel his arms or legs. His Fokker was on fire, but he didn’t feel any burns. He was cold. His plane began to nosedive. So cold! Rudi didn’t feel anything anymore. He was sleepy. He closed his eyes and saw a group of pilots nearby. There was Richthofen and Voss. Hahn was welcoming Tybelsky. They were all waiting for him.
Maybe it won’t be so bad.

Where now the horse and the rider? Where is the horn that was blowing?
Where is the helm and the hauberk, and the bright hair flowing?
Where is the hand on the harpstring, and the red fire glowing?
Where is the spring and the harvest and the tall corn growing?
They have passed like rain on the mountain, like a wind in the meadow;
The days have gone down in the West behind the hills into shadow.
Who shall gather the smoke of the dead wood burning,
Or behold the flowing years from the Sea returning?

No! It cannot be so!

Oh my lord, those #%&*$# Strutters! It really was a suicide Escadrille.

A particular paragraph comes to mind........

"I saw him go into a fairly steep dive and so I continued to watch, and then saw the tri-plane hit the ground and disappear into a thousand fragments, for it seemed to me that it literally went into powder."

RAF - One can only hope, given how much bad luck they've had up to this point. The quiet days definetely help when the squadron is at less than full strength and the enemy would certainly not be.
What a lovely gesture from the lads of the 65th. Here's hoping neither they nor Abbott miss each other /too/ much while he's off in Blighty.

Tross - Truly, better to have some quiet downtime with a low risk mission than to get jumped by another hun armada while flying in a five man flight.

Fullofit - And sometimes it seems that gambling doesn't work out.
At this rate I certainly wouldn't be surprised if the 64th is responsible for 80% of the supply demand and consumption this side of the front given how quickly they're cycling pilots and planes every other day.
That would've been very nice indeed, because as of right now these scrambles may as well be switched out with hiding in dugouts. I blame the forward observers for insuffecient observing.
And a higher jam rate too if previous experiences with it are anything to go by!

And now, an obligatory and well needed:

OH NOOOOOOO!!!
sigh eek2

I reckon I may have jinxed it the other day when I said a collision wouldn't be a good way for Rudi to die..! What a shame! Those damned suicidal strutters prevail...

Thanks chaps, it was a blow for me (literally) and it was bound to happen sooner or later. Word of advice to the German pilots: you see a Strutter, you run! It’s not worth the aggravation. New pilot on the way.

Oberflugmeister Jacob Kühn, EK1
Marine-Feld-Jagdstaffel 1
Jabbeke airfield

17 confirmed kills

1st May 1918

Jacob was in his aircraft which was part of the line of Albatrosse ready for the next sortie.

He was checking the wires and controls as always. "Günter, did you tighten these wires like I requested" said Jacob to the mechanic next to the aircraft. "Yes sir, exactly as requested" said Günter.

Jacob climbed out and began walking over to the briefing room, he'd gotten halfway when the airfield alarm sounded. Jacob looked high but saw nothing, no flak and no aircraft.

"Günter, start her up!" shouted Jacob but still he saw nothing.

He was beginning to wonder if it was a drill when from the right by the hangers someone shouted "Englische Flugzeuge kommen schnell herein!!"

Jacob ran over to his aircraft and shouted to start the others too. He jumped in and buckled up. Just then bullets ripped into the hangers and as Jacob throttled up he saw Camels crossing the airfield.

Jacob raced along the airfield and watched the Camels who now started to turn. He was airborne but stayed between the trees. He saw one Camel who'd decided to turn left rather than right. 'that's the last mistake you're ever going to make' thought Jacob as he bore down on the unsuspecting Camel from below. At the last moment he nosed up and had the Camel in his sights. He fired a deadly burst into him and the enemy aircraft nosed down and smashed into the ground.

By now the other Albatrosse were trying to get airborne, Jacob saw the remaining Camels lining up to strafe them. Jacob turned and flew across the incoming Camels and fired

He didn't know if he scored hits or not but it worked, the Camels broke off their attack and their formation broke up.

This gave the rest of the Jasta the few seconds to get off the ground.

Jacob now spotted another Camel over to his right and turned inside him and before the Camel could do anything Jacob was peppering it with bullets. The Camel tried to roll but was only halfway as Jacob hit him again, shredding the left wing. The Camel now fell to the right and crashed into the trees.

Jacob looked around now and saw Albatrosse taking on Camels all around. He saw one Camel who had climbed up and was circling and looking for a target. Jacob climbed up after him and eventually got the Camel in his sights.

A powerful burst made the Camel nose down and Jacob hit him hard again. The Camel burst into flames and nosed down and went into the ground.

Jacob took stock for a moment, there were flaming, smoking piles all over the place. But the only aircraft he could see were Albatrosse.

Several of these started their landing cycles.

Just then Jacob saw another aircraft to the left between the trees. He went straight towards it and saw it was one last Camel. Jacob stayed low until the last moment and then zoomed up towards the unsuspecting Camel, firing hard into it. The Camel was jolted hard and Jacob looped over and right onto the tail of the enemy aircraft. A long burst into the cockpit was enough to send the Camel sliding left and he hit the ground and rolled over several times finally coming to rest next to one of the airfield flak guns.

Finally, Jacob saw nothing but landing Albatrosse. He now breathed deeply, and tried to comprehend what had just happened. "Those Englanders tried to catch us napping, but it's them who are sleeping now" muttered Jacob to himself as he came around to land.

On landing and joining up with the other pilots in the middle of the airfield he was warmly greeted....."Gut gemacht!"......."Fantastische Arbeit!!"....he could hear from his kameraden.

Later on Oberleutenant Saschenberg confirmed seven Camels had been destroyed, as well as Jacob's four, Saschenberg himself had got one, Oberflugmeister Wessels and Leutenant Heinrich.

Only one Albatros was lost and although Franz Mayer was concussed he was otherwise okay.

Oberleutenant Saschenberg confirmed Jacob's four kills himself.

"What can I say Jacob, that was some of the best flying I've ever seen and at tree top level too.....lower than tree top level at times. You are fearless meine freund or if not you certainly don't let it cloud your judgement. We were in trouble until you stopped their strafing run." said Saschenberg.

"Not only have you four more kills, bringing you upto.........21 is it? Headquarters have agreed with my recommendation that you be awarded the Iron Cross First Class. Accompany me to the kasino Herr Oberflugmeister. I know the rest of the Jasta will enjoy watching you receive it!" Saschenberg finished.

"Vielen dank, herr Oberleutenant" said Jacob.

Fullofit, I watched the video first expecting to see Rudi doing another number on the enemy. What a shock! That was a kick in the drawers. Farewell, your name will be remembered in history.

Lou, back to England? I thought Kemp might get a shot at the English ace. And yes, Kemp will be seeing more of Mia. If he lives long enough.

NR, just remember, now you can miss faster with the new ammo!

AT, four in one day! That’s a feat. Now Jacob is at 21. I see blue in his future.

Feldwebel Ludwig Kemp
Jasta 56
May 1st, 1918
Kommandant Collen was furious. The fuel for the machines had not arrived and there would be no flying today. Kemp thought he may traipse on over to Roulers to see Mia but Collen was having none of it. “Everyone make sure their machine is in top condition. Check it and double check it.”
Kemp and Beckman made their way to the hangers. “The old man is on a tear today!” Beckman said. “That he is.” Kemp replied.
“So tell me my boy, just how well did you get on with this pretty nurse of yours.” Beckman asked.
Kemp stopped and looked at his friend. “If there is an angel on earth, she is it. You know, I think they have it worse than us. Sure, we could die any moment. It’s a lot more likely than being maimed.” Kemp snapped his finger. “Gone in a flash most likely. But those poor girls see the worst of war every day. Trying to help piece together broken lives that will never be the same.”
Beckman took another pull on his cigarette, blowing the smoke in the air. “Well then, let’s follow the Kommandant’s orders and make sure it’s not one of us eh!”

Fullofit - With how suicidal they were, its a surprise it didn't happen sooner. Looking forward to reading the adventures of your new lad, whoever he might be.

Tross - 21 kills, now that's an achievement! Congratulations, I bet those Camel pilots didn't expect such resistance, nevermind from a single pilot.

MFair - Well that's one way of looking at it, but true indeed, hah!
How unfortunate, the situation with fuel must be starting to get tough these days. Valid point about those nurses from Kemp.

2/LT Dean Andrews Cunningham
№64 Squadron RAF
Izles-Les-Hameux, Flanders
1st May, 1918.

2 confirmed

Another quiet day today, thankfully with no more losses. The rumours proved themselves correct and in the early morning a shipment of new Lewis guns arrived, now claiming to have a far improved fire rate, which was meant to help us with our aerial exploits and killings of the Hun. The excitement of such an arrival was subdued, owing to the fact that there was barely anyone to be excited by this in the first place. Leading into the early morning, our mechanics took to work examining the new equipment and then attaching it to our planes and soon towards noon they were done. We took off on our first sortie shortly afterwards.

Taking off in another small flight of 6, B flight climbed into the calm and peaceful sky and headed south towards enemy lines for an ordinary lines patrol of the German side. We were wary of course for the possibility of encountering anyone, but it seems like most of the Hun forces were instead being sent up North to handle the more fierce fighting up there. Thus, completing our patrol of the lines without any encounters we turned and went back to land at our home field without issues. A few hours later came another flight, this time more exciting than the last. As our mechanics went to strap some Cooper bombs to our crafts, we were informed that directly to the East of us laid a Hun railyard being used to funnel troops and supplies across to the front. HQ decided that the railyard /shouldn't/ be there, and we of course were to fly off to correct such a silly mistake.

While lined up on the field, we got a special visit and a fly past from friendly RE8s from some squadron, passing us while they headed towards the lines, no doubt for some mission of their own. Once more, we took off without issues and headed over the lines, Hun Archie giving us a warm welcome as we flew past it. No doubt owing to the great weather, we found the railyard almost right away and dropped a few gifts down to the Huns below, certainly messing up the rails and setting fire to what seemed to be a storage building. Satisfied with such damages, we turned and headed for home, not wanting to linger longer and risk being jumped by Huns that could be attracted to all the noise and fireworks that we set off. The attack was deemed satisfactory, and upon being congratulated we were dismissed. Tomorrow two new airmen are to arrive at the squadron, I wonder how long they'll last...

Albert, looks like Jacob will easily take over the mantle from Rudi. That is one meteoric rise. Well done against all those Camels and in an obsolete Albatros at that. It was good of Obltn Sachsenberg to confirm all four of them.

MFair, Rudi will be missed, but he simply had made way for the young ones, the rising stars. Hopefully Kemp can send a few of those Strutters to hell for him?
Keep those machines in top shape and the courting skills sharp.

NR, definitely it was a disaster waiting to happen. Such is war.
So, the swap of the Lewis guns was an easy job since there weren’t that many planes around. Hopefully Dean can take full advantage of the updated technology.
A quiet mission and one that went out with a bang. Seems like the HQ strive for balance. Hopefully the new arrivals will boost the Squadron’s strength to a more respectable level.

Sergent Pyotr Fyodor Smirnov
SPAD VII
0 confirmed kills

Pyotr Fyodor Smirnov was born on 25 July 1886 in Petrograd. His mother was a housewife and his father a watchmaker. His childhood was unremarkable. He followed the advice of his uncle and entered the military academy. After graduating he was assigned a post with cavalry unit. When the war broke out Pyotr and his unit was tasked with scouting enemy movements. At the second battle of Tannenberg he was injured and spent a significant amount of time recovering. His left leg, which had been operated on never healed properly. Needless to say his cavalry career was over and he was stuck behind a desk. Smirnov tolerated his new assignment for a while but when a call came for volunteers to join the Air Service, he saw his chance. He was accepted as an observer in the two-seater unit. After serving for two years in this position and learning to fly on the side by observing his pilot and taking lessons from him, Pyotr requested a transfer to scout unit. The request was denied. Smirnov persevered and continued to send in requests for transfer. Finally he was granted the request to enter scout training. His celebrations were short lived. The pilot school he was sent to was an exchange program. Smirnov was to be instructed in France. With reluctance he’d made the trip and began his training. While still at the training facility he’d learned Russia had capitulated and the war was over for him.
Pyotr was not yet ready to return to civilian life and instead requested a posting in one of the French Escadrilles. Pilots were in short supply and his request was quickly granted. He was now on board of a train on its way to an escadrille in Marne sector. He disembarked at Grandvillires and travelled the rest of the way to Hétomesnil aerodrome by lorry.
It was early evening before he was standing in front of the escadrille Capitaine. Jacques d'Indy looked at the documents and made a face.
“- Sergent Smirnov.” He looked at the man. “- It says here you’ve flown combat sorties already.”
“- да капитан!” Pyotr had forgotten himself.
“- I’d prefer we communicated in French, please.” Capitaine waved his hand. “- We expect it of all of our pilots, even the Americans.”
“- Apologies mon Capitaine, I am still getting used to the language”.
“-Good. Settle in. Have something to eat. Get some sleep because tomorrow we start early. Oh, and welcome to SPA 67!”

MFair - A frustrating day for Kemp. He must just want to crank the engine and take off, never mind tinkering with it. As for Jacob, he was on a mission there (no pun intended). After the news about Rudi and the gong curse Jacob was determined to ensure it didn't happen to him.

NR - A good day for Cunningham and 64 squadron whilst they rebuild. A quiet patrol and then a very well accomplished attack on the railyard. That'll help morale for when the new chaps arrive. Hopefully those new lewis guns are as good as they say on the tin.

Fullofit - Still can't get my head around Rudi, and Jacob has a loooooong way to go to reach Rudi's heights and who are all those Strutters going to come after now eh! Jacob will need all his luck and skill over these next few weeks methinks.

Welcome to Pyotr, he has picked a difficult time to join the fight on the western front, but hey at least the Strutters are on his side!

"A great deal of an aeroplane could be holed without affecting its ability to fly.

Fullofit, now this is novel. I think, in all the DID campaigns, this is the first Russian pilot. Welcome!

NotRelevant, at this stage, no contact is a blessing. Mice screenshots.

AlbertTross, yep, Kemp would have enjoyed cranking his engine with Mia! Tinkering with engines and such is a drag.

Fullofit - I go out for the day only to come back and find that Germany's top-scoring ace has gotten himself killed! Dam'd collisions. Farewell Rudi, enjoy Valhalla with your fellow fleigers. Welcome Sergent Smirnov, here's hoping a Russian pilot flying for the French is a lucky combination and one that can survive this madness.
As to Freddy smoking, he does on occasion, but not so much as to worry about tainting his pearly whites. Actually, he carries cigarettes more to have them available to offer to one of his mates, or an attractive miss, (not necessarily in that order).

NotRelevant - Fine flying weather, better armament, replacement fliers on the way, no harassing air Huns about, and a successful attack on a Boche railyard? What more could Dean and his crew ask for, eh.

MFair - Those fuel shortages are only going to get worse I'm afraid. Ludwig sounds quite smitten, and why wouldn't he be. And he's right, those brave nurses surely do have it worse than the air warriors.

Albert - Four confirmed in a single go? Outstanding job on Jacob's part! But those Camels, talk about your suicide squad. Some super screenshots to accompany the report.

Captain Frederick Abbott is currently napping on a train that is wending its way through the lovely countryside of southern England. He should be in Biddenden in time for lunch. Yesterday morning, before leaving Bertangles, he attempted to call on his friend Ripper, having inquired at 84 Squadron as to his whereabouts and being informed that Captain Winningstad had been wounded and was currently recuperating in hospital. As luck would have it, said hospital was in Étaples, Freddy's point of departure for the channel crossing later that afternoon. However, luck is a fickle lady, and in the end Abbott missed visiting with his pal due to no small amount of confusion as to just which hospital Ripper was in. Time ran out and Freddy had to catch the departing troop ferry, so the best he could do was leave a note for Oliver with an agreeable nurse, who said she would see to it that it got delivered. C'est la guerre.

DISCLAIMER: any simpathizing towards Hermann Goring during the narration is purely based on the historical context in which my fictional pilots meets him in. I do not agree nor tolerate any of Goring's actions in the later years, particularly during the Nazi regime in Germany.

Feldwebel Albrecht Bernhard Schutzmeier
JG III, Jasta 27
Halluin/Rekkem, Flanders
29th April 1918
0 confirmed kills, 1 pending.

This place is so much different than Dinkelsbühl. The cozy atmosphere of the evenings in town, going out with my friends drinking beer and meeting ladies...Well, for sure my stay at the front will be a regenerating pause from all of that, given that I survive. I didn't have many expectations when I joined the flight school as a kadett, but it seems like I'm pretty neat at flying these crates. This truly is a new century! I finished my trainings last week, flying an old Albatros two-seater (one of the old dusty ones, that you never see at the front anymore!): slow, sturdy, but still gives the idea of how flying works. I only got told last minute where I was going to be assigned, and as I figured it was in the Flanders region, as offensive Georgette is currently still going forward (but from what I understood it's not going to last much longer, our troops seem to have failed to actively conquer back much territory...). I was about to become part of one of the newly formed fighter wings, Jagdgeschwader III, particularly in Jasta 27.
The Staffelfuhrer is an interesting feller, said Hermann Göring; we're flying these small and swift crates, Dreideckers (you just can't compare these with that bloody two-seater I trained in!). The feeling is great, although it seems I'm forced to apply a costant rudder input to the right in order to keep level flying, as it tends to drift to the left whenever the throttle is above 70%. Oh well, seems like I'm gonna need to get used to these!

Flight 1
My first mission was pretty straight forward: a patrol behind friendly frontlines, covering the territories above some already damaged factories in the towns close to our airfield. All seemed pretty quiet, after climbing we were hovering above our objective. I leaned inside my cockpit to hit the RPM gauge, as it seems a bit..Twitchy. As I raised my eyes, an enemy flight was just above us. From what I understood they were Scout Experimentals, from the Royal Aircraft Factory, model 5a. I shouldn't be rooting for the enemy, but I must say theirs are some good-looking machines (not to take everything away from my small crate, shall that be clear!). I feel like they quickly wasted the altitude advantage, as they dived onto us without being really aggressive. I found myself in front of one of those scouts, he fired a couple of shots but missed me. I blipped the engine, while seeing him dash past me. I kicked in throttle at maximum power, and went for him. It was me and Klimke behind the guy; my komrad shot a few rounds into the enemy's wing, then pulled away to have me finish the work: once I was at an acceptable range, I fired my Spandaus as I saw smoke puffs coming from the English scout. As I saw the already damaged wing, I decided to go for that, and it didn't take long to see his wing ripping in half.
Killing is a weird feeling. On one side, I was slowly realizing I had caused the death of another human being, on the other the fact that I had successfully fought out a challenging opponent. After all enemy machines were...Out of order, we veered back to our airfield. Once we had left our machines behind us, Klimke approached me and gave me a promising pat on my shoulder. I was thrived!
As we went back to the barracks for debriefing, I filed in my claim. Hope it doesn't take long for it to get confirmed!
Needless to say, we chugged an extra glass of beer for my baptism of fire. Didn't exagerate though, as we had planned another flight for the afternoon.

Flight 2
I'm gonna save you the boredom, a friendly lines patrol with nothing interesting happening. Seems like the Englishmen were having their tea.. biggrin

30th April 1918

Seems like I still need to get used to this. Since this night I'm stuck in bed with a high fever, seems like I'll be grounded for a day or two.

1st May 1918

Still grounded because of my health. I just got told my claim was...Rejected for lack of visual confirmation and corroboration!
sigh
Well, I guess I'll need to make another one now!
