Server Market to be a 3 way battle in the future:

Quote
Intel CEO: ‘We Are Playing Offense, Not Defense’ In Response To NVIDIA Grace ARM CPU Announcement For Servers

Earlier this week, NVIDIA announced its first CPU for data centers and AI cloud computing known as Grace. Based on the ARM architecture and making use of the Neoverse cores, NVIDIA is positioning the Grace CPU against x86 chips which primarily feature two rivals, Intel & AMD. The Grace CPU is expected to debut in 2023

Intel holds an insanely huge CPU server market share, accounting for over 90% whereas the rest of the share belongs to AMD. AMD has been very competitive against Intel with their recent launches and they are further expected to gain market share

With the announcement of NVIDIA's Grace CPUs, a 3rd Major (non-x86) player is entering the field and has already contracted a deal for two major supercomputers

TSMC makes AMD's gaming CPU and GPU chips. So, maybe I won't be getting a new AMD GPU at MSRP this year -- or next year.

TSMC Expects Chip Shortages Into 2022, Ups CapEx to $30 Billion

TSMC expects chip supply crisis to ease in 2023

TSMC operated at an "over 100% utilization" during the quarter, though it could not fulfill all of its customers' orders. When asked about expectations when the shortages were going to end, the management responded that it expected the deficit to persist throughout 2021 and into 2022. It is impossible for TSMC to quickly respond to growing demand as it has to buy land, prepare the sites, construct new fabs, procure manufacturing equipment, install these tools, and ramp up the facilities. All of these steps take a long time, and TSMC expects its supply abilities to improve tangibly only in 2023.

I'm an AMD Fan because I don't like how Intel handled "competition" 15+ years ago (neither did the Courts -- Intel was Sued and lost). Intel had fallen behind -- so it "cut deals" with PC makers to favor Intel. It worked and damaged AMD. History may be repeating. We'll see.

Alienware Really Doesn’t Want You to Buy an AMD Ryzen PC

Once upon a time (specifically, the early 2000s), certain manufacturers and OEMs were so terrified of what Intel might do to them if they sold AMD products, they went to ridiculous lengths to hide the fact that they did so.

Even when AMD was beating Intel in performance tests, OEMs would describe Intel-powered systems in soaring terms, while AMD machines were labeled with more pedestrian remarks like “Good for business and home office use.”

To summarize: [Today in 2021, some Alienware] Intel products get updated descriptions, AMD products don’t. Intel systems are directly described as “gaming desktops,” while AMD systems are not. Intel Aurora systems are correctly identified as offering PCIe 4.0, while the AMD Aurora R10 has never been advertised as offering PCIe 4.0 in the landing page’s spec sheet.

By only listing the “80 Plus Gold” power supply metric for the Intel systems, Alienware creates the illusion that these systems are more power-efficient than their AMD counterparts. Please forgive me while I laugh myself sick. Rocket Lake is not a bad performer, but you’d need an 80 Plus Neutronium power supply capable of achieving >100 percent efficiency to make its power consumption competitive with Ryzen 5000.

The desktop landing page accurately describes the “up to” RAM clock speeds and capacities for Intel products, but not for AMD products. Alienware sells top-end Intel systems with dual-channel RAM but sells top-end AMD systems in single-channel configurations,

Could this all be an accident? Sure. It’s possible that Alienware managed to spontaneously make more than a half-dozen mistakes, all of which happen to favor Intel. It’s possible one of those mistakes happened to involve listing power supply efficiency in a way that makes Rocket Lake look better than Ryzen at a time when Ryzen’s power efficiency is vastly better than anything Intel brings to the table. It is possible that Alienware has accidentally misrepresented its own product configurations in a way that exclusively and entirely favors Intel’s objectively worse platform.

But is it likely?

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X vs Intel Core i5-11600K: Mid-Range Rocket Lake and Ryzen 5000 CPU Face Off

Here's the tale of the tape: AMD wins this Ryzen 5 5600X vs Intel Core i5-11600K battle with a tie in one category and a win in three others, marking a four to three victory in favor of Team Red. Overall, the Ryzen 5 5600X offers up a superior blend of gaming performance, power consumption and efficiency, and a bundled cooler to help offset the higher suggested retail pricing, remaining our go-to chip recommendation for the mid-range. That is if you can find it at or near suggested pricing.

Where Intel leads, it barely leads. The only reason its in the conversation is because its MSRP cheaper -- before you buy a cooler for it -- and pay the extra power bill over its lifetime. Also, the Ryzen 5 5600X is hard to find at MSRP.

I got a Ryzen 5 5600X at MSRP a couple months ago -- it plays games as well as my Ryzen 7 5800X. My search today did not find one at MSRP.

Nvidia made a significant improvement to Ray Tracing. Interestingly, they made it so that it works on AMD RX 6000 GPUs also -- kudos to Nvidia for that. It does require that a game be made to use it. So, no games yet.

NVIDIA RTX Direct Illumination Enables Games with Up to Millions of Dynamic Lights

ReSTIR, a deep learning algorithm devised by NVIDIA engineers to render millions of dynamic lights in real time.

As expected, NVIDIA made it so RTX Direct Illumination is easily integrated with the existing RTX Global Illumination (RTXGI) SDK. Mixing the two should allow for scalable global illumination based on many, many light sources.

Richard Cowgill confirmed that RTXDI and RTXGI are both entirely architecture-agnostic and will therefore work not only on AMD's Radeon RX 6000 Series GPUs but on ray-tracing capable consoles as well, such as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S|X. Graphics APIs supported include DirectX Raytracing and Vulkan Ray Tracing.

In the attachments, the implication is that every speck of light source you see is separately illuminating/shadowing/reflecting in the game world -- at usable frame rates.

Over $200 billion wiped off cryptocurrency market in a day as bitcoin plunges below $50,000

Bitcoin and other digital coins plunged on Friday, wiping over $200 billion of the value of the cryptocurrency market.

President Biden is expected to raise long-term capital gains tax for the wealthiest Americans to 43.4%, including a surtax.

That’s led to a wave of selling in crypto markets, which have had a great year with bitcoin climbing more than sixfold in the last 12 months.

I've got the dreaded x570C USB disconnection bug......and typically, there is no 1.2.0.2 AGESA BIOS for it yet.

I can barely do basic desktop stuff as even the mouse/keyboard are connecting/disconnecting. If I launch an intensive game or anything with the VR headset (Oculus or Reverb) the entire set of USB ports are going up and down like a fiddlers elbow. Upto a couple of weeks ago everything was fine.....no problems and no driver updates or software tweaks have happened.
I'm tempted to buy a ROG Strix Gaming-E which does have the beta BIOS...royal pain in the ass.

Well, that sucks. frown

I have a couple Gigabyte X570 motherboards and one ASRock B550 operational in the house. No issues on stock settings; but then, I use USB only occasionally on those systems -- i.e. I might have had a "hiccup" and not even realized it.

Apparently, the fix was transmitted to the motherboard vendors in March -- but, then they had to incorporate it into their software and release their fix. Hopefully, your MB will get the fix very soon.

UPDATE 3/11: AMD says it has "isolated the root cause [of the problem] and developed a solution that addresses a range of reported symptoms." Look for a patch to roll out via motherboard vendors next month [April].

Edit: I just checked Gigabyte site. The BIOS fix for my Gigabyte motherboards rolled out on 2021/03/25. At ASRock, the ASRock B550 does not seem to be updated yet.

Intel’s CEO Travels to Europe to Talk Foundries as Silicon Nationalism Rises

Next week, Intel’s CEO, Pat Gelsinger, will travel to Europe to meet with EU officials about the possibility of building new fab capacity within the bloc. These discussions with the EU will take place at a time when foundry capacity and overall semiconductor manufacturing capability are increasingly seen in geopolitical terms.

The EU’s recent draft proposal called for the various members to collectively account for 20 percent of leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing .. At present, the EU is home to about 10 percent of the world’s semiconductor manufacturing capability, but there are no leading-edge facilities currently within the zone.

Hope Europe eventually meets its goals for leading edge production. Competition is good smile

Bitmain Antminer E9 Ethereum ASIC is as powerful as 32 GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards

Bitmain announced its new mining Application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) called Antminer E9.

Chinese Bimain announced that that the Antminer E9 will launch soon, but the company provided no release date nor the price of the machine itself. Due to the global shortage of components, it is likely that the price of the machine will also be very high, yet still a lot more cost-effective than buying all 32 RTX 3080 graphic cards instead.

Perhaps such items will eventually take pressure off the gaming GPU market.

My board (Auros Elite) hasn't got the fix yet.....rumoured beta next week and stable start of May. Are you sure your AGESA 1.2.0.2 was rolled out in March? I didn't think vendors got it until mid-April?.....there was a 1.2.0.1 patch which fixed some B550 USB issues released through March.

For Gigabyte 570s it was 1.2.0.1. The "quote" was simply a "cut and paste" of what they said on the only site I could readily find.

Checking the Gigabyte site showed a patch had been released. Given the release timing and the description, I "ass-u-me-d" it contained a fix as Gigabyte emphasizes its BIOSs. Don't know if its the final fix or how well it works. From your information, it may only be a preliminary "step one". Again, ASRock showed no update -- more in line with a "late April" release.

From the Gigabyte site listing changes for X570 AORUS PRO WIFI (rev. 1.0 -- my MB) BIOS and my X570 I AORUS PRO WIFI (rev. 1.0) uITX:

A March 25 article:

Quote
AMD AGESA 1.2.0.1 Patch A BIOS Firmware Starts Rolling Out For X570 & B550 Motherboards, Fixes Ryzen 5000 USB Compatibility Issues

AMD's board partners have started rolling out the AGESA 1.2.0.1 Patch A BIOS Firmware for X570 & B550 motherboards, offering improved Ryzen 5000 CPU compatibility & also including fixes for USB issues that several users were facing.

AMD was meant to release its AGESA 1.2.0.2 BIOS Firmware to address the USB connectivity issues faced by several users however, it seems like the company has fast-forwarded the release with the AGESA 1.2.0.1 Patch A BIOS Firmware

So, maybe this is most of the fix we needed -- as AMD jumped quicker than planned/expected.

The article shows a long list of MBs affected -- Gigabyte by far released the update for the most motherboards (as noted, Gigabyte emphasizes its BIOSs).

Yeah, thats 1.2.0.1.......unfortunately it doesn't fix the crippling USB issue that 1.2.0.2 does

According to April 22 article, the USB preliminary fix started with 1.2.0.1 BIOS, then 1.2.0.2 Beta (available for some MB now), then 1.2.0.2 final (non-Beta) in early May. The expectation is that Beta and Final will actually be the same code (assuming Beta works).

Not all MB makers are releasing all versions. So, some folks have to wait for early May -- or later depending on the MB manufacturer.

All the above is similar to what you had already found out. Parenthetically, since I have no USB issues the way I use it, I was not "following' this one. Thanks for the clarifications.

Having built several Zen3 platform machines since late last year, I can confirm that both MSI and Asus made the interim 1.2.0.1 "Patch A" available back in March, and both posted 1.2.0.2 by/before April 14th (Asus actually posted theirs on 4/9 - more than two weeks ago).

By comparison, the one Gigabyte board I built on still doesn't have the 1.2.0.2 update posted.

Guess it's all down to whose hardware you deal with. In my case, I only used the one Gigabyte board because it was the absolute cheapest option for that particular project. Fortunately I haven't sold it yet to anyone, so no effect outside my shop.

Interestingly, of the ones I have sold, no one's made any reports whatsoever of USB issues. Again, maybe it's just a matter of whose hardware; in this case, the connected USB devices (...?) Not saying/don't know - but I do know for sure and certain that there would have to be some reason that some are affected while others are not.

My ASRock B550 Steel Legend mATX 1.2.0.2 BIOS just came on line in the last few hours.

No USB issues in my tests. But, I intend to give this PC (R5 5600X) to a relative in late May. So, I'll update it.

AMD Smashes Records Again, Data Center and Semi-Custom Revenue up 286%, Consumer Up 46%

AMD grew in every segment despite constant product shortages for its consumer CPUs and GPUs at retail, a byproduct of record demand and pandemic-spurred supply chain disruptions.

AMD's Ryzen processors set records for revenue and average selling prices (ASPs). AMD also says it has increased its desktop PC market share again,

Intel reported last week that it suffered a sharp decline in ASPs for both its notebook and desktop PC chips due to a shift in its sales mix to lower-end processors. That shift is likely due to AMD's continued performance lead with its Ryzen 5000 processors and strong sales of its higher-end models. AMD CEO Lisa Su remarked that AMD remains firmly focused on its high-end products.

Regarding the Future of AMD -- a Rumor/Leak:

Quote
AMD Zen 5 Ryzen Desktop APUs Codenamed Strix Point, Features Hybrid Core Architecture on 3nm Process Node

First details regarding AMD's next-generation Zen 5 based 'Strix Point' Ryzen Desktop CPUs & APUs have hit the web. It looks like the successor to Zen 4 will have some big changes on both consumer CPU & APU lineups.

Zen 4 based Phoenix APUs are expected next year for desktop and mobility platforms, the next-generation Zen 5 APUs are already in the early design & development phase.

The AMD Zen 5 chips will be fabricated on the brand new 3nm process node whereas Zen 4 chips are going to be based on the 5nm process node. The architecture is going to be a lot of changes in terms of design. It is stated by the source that AMD does bigger architectural revamps for its odd-numbered Zen architectures while even-numbered Zen cores get better optimizations. It is stated that the Zen 5 based Strix Point APUs are expected to be part of the Ryzen 8000 family but they're going to include one major change.

the Zen 5 architecture is said to be the first to feature a big. LITTLE-esque design. The AMD Strix Point Ryzen APUs are expected to feature 8 large Zen 5 cores and 4 smaller cores

As previously noted a few times, 14nm, 10nm, 7nm, 5nm, 3nm are not necessarily actual circuit sizes (though size does change and parts of a chip may be the size stated). Rather, its a shorthand way of saying how well the chips perform versus each other. Its for advertising purposes that size is stated.
